UNBEATABLE is far from a perfect game, but it excels in the areas that are important.

UNBEATABLE takes a simple two-button rhythm system and builds its entire experience around mastering patterns and timing. Arcade mode lets you focus purely on the songs, pushing for cleaner runs and higher difficulties, while story mode slows things down with longer stretches between musical moments. The rhythm gameplay stays satisfying as it ramps up, and the game’s visual style holds everything together. If you’re here for a focused rhythm experience and don’t mind a slower story pace, UNBEATABLE delivers where it counts.

Unbeatable suffers from an identity crisis, pairing a decent arcade mode with an uneven story mode that buries its rhythm gameplay beneath a bit too much padding.

Playing UNBEATABLE makes you feel like you’re watching pirated episodes of your favourite show. Its janky narrative structure and limited content make it feel appropriately criminal to grow attached. However, while frustrating at times, these jagged edges are part of the charm. UNBEATABLE feels like an unapologetic guilty pleasure.

UNBEATABLE is a good rhythm action adventure game, with it highlights being its visual style and the arcade mode. The story is fine, but can feel all over the place at times with a script that isn't the best, but the music through the game is good  and there are a couple of standout tracks. It has been a while since a decent rhythm game came out, so it is worth giving UNBEATABLE a shot.

Ultimately, what do I score a game like Unbeatable that has such observable problems but some of the most heart-pumping emotional resonance I’ve experienced in games throughout this entire year? What cute, little video game review cliche can I lean on to help me out of this predicament? D-Cell itself offered a cheeky, little take at how review scores can be perceived, and I figure why not send that ball back over the net? I was thinking a seven at first, but Sonic Adventure 2’s problems are way more frustrating than Unbeatable’s. And I am a little shy as a person. So let’s go with that.

Thankfully, even if some of the emotional bits, philosophical musings, or political parallels don’t land in the midst of all that chaos, the overall vibes never miss.

Overcoming a lacklustre start to its story mode with some bugs and other minor issues, UNBEATABLE manages to become an incredibly memorable and poignant journey. Eloquently exploring themes of community and the blood, sweat and tears that come with creating art, it winds up being a stylish adventure with a lot of heart and a fantastic celebration of all things music and rhythm games. Playing it almost feels like you’re in the middle of a mosh pit, receiving blows and elbows to the face as you watch your favourite band. You’re getting knocked about, and your footing isn’t always stable and able to keep up with the noise, but damn if it isn’t some of the best and most passionate things worth living for.

Unbeatable brings so much flavour and distinct personality to what is inherently such a simple game at its core that it's hard to dislike. If you're still on the fence, a demo is available as well as the White Label demo from 2021. The latter lacks a lot of the final product's visual polish, but will still give you the exact feel of what to expect from the final game's mechanics and narrative style.

UNBEATABLE is a labor of love, a game that celebrates music and wants players to love its tunes and vibe with them. The story is not always entirely coherent, but all the characters are lovely to interact with. The visual style is clearly anime-inspired but has unique touches, even if the world can seem a little empty. The game’s music is so good that even the menu tracks are bangers.

UNBEATABLE is an experience that can satisfy the cravings of rhythm-game fans for a good while. Its energetic soundtrack—both in quality and sheer volume—paired with solid rhythm gameplay, stylish character and environment designs, and a variety of fun mini-games make up the game’s brightest strengths. Add to that some charming dialogue and well-written characters. However, despite these highlights, the muddled story and poor narrative delivery—along with a dull adventure/platforming section and a handful of audio-design issues—feel like a bucket of cold water that dampens the experience and overshadows the game’s better parts. Even so, UNBEATABLE can still be appealing not only to rhythm-game enthusiasts but also to other players, especially with its range of difficulty options and the ability to adjust beat speed. If you’re a fan of great music, definitely add UNBEATABLE to your list and enjoy the ride.

Musically, thematically, and mechanically masterful, with some minor jank lightly souring the experience.

UNBEATABLE is noisy, messy, fashionable, and very honest. It combines rhythm gameplay with a story that some people won't like, but when it works, it really works. The two-button method shows that a simple design doesn't have to be shallow, and the tale gives each beat you touch an emotional meaning.

UNBEATABLE combines rhythm gaming with a heartfelt story and incredible characters. The title is punk throughout, both in its messaging and its nontraditional approach to storytelling, and at times feels more like an interactive music video than a video game. In the end, it truly is an “UNBEATABLE” experience.

UNBEATABLE is a frustrating mess. While there's a great gameplay and narrative premise, it's often undermined by frequent glitches, strange writing, and a focus on random minigames, exploration, and platforming instead of the core rhythm sections. Even if all the bugs are fixed, I struggle to recommend this game for other players

UNBEATABLE is a standout rhythm game that fuses stylish anime-inspired visuals with a bold narrative and a unique combat-based music system. Its story mode surprises with emotional depth and memorable characters, while the arcade mode delivers replayability through over 70 tracks and a satisfying challenge curve. Though its two-button control scheme may take time to master and some gameplay segments in story mode feel bloated, the game’s commitment to its artistic vision and mechanical flair make it a must-play for rhythm fans seeking something fresh and fearless.

UNBEATABLE isn’t perfect, but its wonderful sense of style, absolutely banging soundtrack, and energetically unique rhythm-based gameplay make it a stand out as a worthwhile experience. The story pacing stumbles and the technical issues can definitely interrupt the momentum, yet the game’s personality and creativity still manage to shine through. If you’re a rhythm game fan looking for something stylish and unique, you’ll find plenty to enjoy with UNBEATABLE. Oh, and when some patches fix some of the game’s issues? You could add an extra point to our score.
