Legacy of Kain: Defiance offers a fresh coat of paint on the final chapter in the Soul Reaver story. Despite this, however, Defiance is overshadowed by the flaws of the original game. Poor sound design, buggy original code, and repetitive combat hold it back from being a truly remarkable remaster. Thankfully, the story has aged well enough that even if you are familiar with the game already, it is worth another go for old times’ sake.

Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered fulfills its role in rescuing one of the most important chapters of one of the most remarkable narratives in video games. Even more than two decades after its original release, the game still holds up mainly due to the strength of its story, the quality of its characters, and the way it concludes the complex saga of Kain and Raziel. But not everything has aged perfectly. Some limitations of the original version remain noticeable, especially in the camera system and certain aspects of gameplay. These elements reflect the era in which the game was created and may seem strange to players accustomed to more modern action titles.

Built on the foundation of a PlayStation 2-era classic, the work done on Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered is simply not as impressive as it was when we saw it in the remaster of 1999’s Soul Reaver. Even so, Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered is far from a terrible remaster of the original and is definitely the most modern way to experience the game until a full remake comes along.

Legacy of Kain – Defiance Remaster stays close to the original and has received an appealing visual upgrade. However, the game design is unmistakably from 2003 and feels dated by today’s standards. When it comes to the story, the dialogue, and the way those dialogues are presented, the developers created a magnificent work back then that still stands the test of time in these areas. Fans can experience the finale of Raziel’s story again here in a polished form, but beyond that there aren’t many reasons to return to Nosgoth.

PlayEveryWare’s remaster shows a lot of respect for Defiance’s tone, improving upon its atmosphere with new lighting and textures, while also allowing players to freely pick and choose between its quality-of-life features. Touching up a classic is never easy, and while I do wish fewer corners were cut, especially when it comes to AI upscaling, I can’t deny that it does look great for the most part. It’s very clear that all of the remaster’s changes are well-intentioned and aim to modernize the game in optional ways, respecting those who prefer the original experience while also attempting to sand down some of its rougher edges.

Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered takes the best of the original title and strengthens its weaknesses. It might not be for everyone, but it's certainly an essential title for anyone who wants to experience a great narrative.

The remastered final installment of the Legacy of Kain saga, Defiance, has arrived. A solid remaster, on par with the original, that will leave no one indifferent.

Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered is a beautifully preserved gothic classic that prioritizes narrative depth and atmosphere. While some mechanics reveal their age, the storytelling and world-building ensure a compelling return to Nosgoth.

Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered is a solid, albeit flawed, nostalgia trip that manages to feel particularly special thanks to its bundled in extras. With some revamped visuals and quality-of-life features, as well as brilliant bonus features like a playable demo of an unreleased entry in the series, cut levels, and lore documents to catch up on the narrative, it is a real treat for returning fans. I’d be lying if I said it was perfect – it can be clunky and the game’s age really can show in some aspects of its design – but it does exactly what it sets out to do: offer an exciting (and convenient) way to experience what was a top-notch release in the Legacy of Kain series.

Yes, this remaster has quite a few strengths, but at the same time you also get clunky controls, a camera that behaves like a rebellious teenager, and a combat system that (despite not being bad) does get boring after a while - it's an entertaining ride, but in 2026 you can't help but notice its age.

It goes without saying that as a fan of Legacy of Kain, I’m holding my breath in regards to Ascendence, having little to go by besides the quick trailer that it’s got over the last few months. Still, having the opportunity to get reacquainted with the series through Legacy of Kain: Defiance and coming up for air after diving into so much bonus material, I’m hopeful that it’s all an indication that the actual new entry in the series will be worthwhile. It won’t be long now until we find out, I suppose.

Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered is a great re-release for a game that has aged quite poorly. You can now toggle a third-person perspective instead of the original fixed-camera, yet there are still major issues with the combat and some significant glitches scattered throughout the game. That said, the new quality-of-life features and the addition of cut content and lost media make this a must-buy for fans of the franchise, regardless of any shortcomings.

If you can ignore the shameful use of AI-tools in the game development process, Defiance Remastered might be worth it alone for the bonus materials. What we have is a well-preserved remaster of a very flawed game, just as flawed now as it was in 2003, albeit a bit more noticeable.

Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered is both a time capsule and a restoration project. Its new camera option and visual overhaul breathe fresh life into one of the series’ most ambitious entries, while its narrative remains as compelling and operatic as ever. But beneath the polish lies the unmistakable rigidity of early-2000s design; backtracking-heavy levels, archaic combat quirks, and the occasional technical stumble. For returning fans, this is easily the definitive way to experience Kain and Raziel’s intertwined fate. For newcomers who are willing to wade into the deep lore, it’s a fascinating, if sometimes stubborn, relic of a different era. Imperfect, dramatic, and unapologetically gothic, Defiance still has fangs, even if they’re a little worn.

Legacy of Kain: Defiance still isn't a particularly great game, but its remaster is nothing short of superb. This is how remasters are meant to be done!

Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered feels like a heartfelt tribute to the series and its devoted fanbase. The developers have not only enhanced the visuals and refined the camera and controls, but also included a wealth of bonus features and previously cut content. Taken together, these additions feel like a long-overdue gesture of goodwill toward the community that has kept the franchise alive for years. I really hope Crystal Dynamics is testing the waters before making a long-awaited return to Nosgoth once more.

Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered expertly blends the gameplay of Blood Omen and Soul Reaver while retaining the same masterclass in storytelling the series is known for. While its PS2 roots are still on display, the new camera angle paints the entire experience in a new light, making it a title both fans and newcomers will not want to miss.

Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered is a feature-rich endeavor, action-packed with things for long-time fans and to orient new ones with compelling lore and cogent gameplay in an affordable purchase. I recommend it as a curiosity at the very least, but it's worth a full playthrough and exploration of its depths. Who knows, you may find yourself a fan at the end of the night.
