Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered Reviews
Continuing with the series' revival, Legacy of Kain: Defiance is again another spruce up of the old vampiric duo from 2003. Fans will appreciate the new look, quality of life improvements and better camera control. It may be a hard sell to newcomers, but it's still an accessible game in its own right. Paired with the Soul Reaver remasters, it's a good time to take a bite into it.
Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered is an example of a high-quality rework. It is a game that preserved its story while removing the elements that previously held it back.

Overall, Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered is a faithful and visually improved return to a cult classic that shines because of its storytelling and atmosphere rather than its gameplay. It is a remaster made for fans first, not a reinvention for a new generation.
Legacy of Kain: Defiance HD Remaster does a pretty good job of bringing this classic game into the modern gaming landscape visually. Even today, the story remains captivating, the dialogue is cleverly written and beautifully staged, the art style is unparalleled, and the overall, distinctive atmosphere of the world of Nosgoth allows you to fully immerse yourself in the experience. The gameplay innovation of the freely movable camera confidently sweeps aside the sharpest criticism of the original’s gameplay. Nevertheless, one can’t shake the feeling that more could have been done visually here, just as in the remasters of Soul Reaver 1 and 2, and that this was once again merely a trial balloon released to gauge today’s gamers’ general interest in the series. Accordingly, I hope this was enough to convince them to treat us to a proper, modern sequel in the future. That said, the overall gameplay and level design feel genuinely outdated in several areas these days. So I’d be rather skeptical about whether the remaster will be able to attract new fans… For connoisseurs and fans of the series, however, it comes highly recommended.

A solid update to a classic conclusion. While some camera issues remain, the improved textures and lighting make this the best way to play the end of the saga.

If it hasn’t become abundantly clear by now, I adore the Soul Reaver games. With it’s stunning story, amazing writing and some of the most phenomenal and iconic voice acting and musical score in videogaming, these games - especially as a whole - are masterpieces of the medium that are as much art as they are entertainment. And having them all available om modern hardware in a more beautiful package is exactly what I’ve waited years for. Legacy of Kain Defiance Remastered rounds out the Soul Reaver saga with a gorgeous, layered package that is a must have for every collection.
On paper, Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered, much like every title in the franchise, doesn’t seem too special. Average gameplay is once again a plague on the stronger aspects, but it all just works together and presents an honestly outstanding title that is better than the sum of its parts. Some excellent quality of life changes, extra content to dive into, and a flawless framerate with beautiful HD textures manage to edge out some of the nastier aspects of this remaster, including its propensity to crash towards the later stages of the game. I now wait with bated breath for Blood Omen 1 and 2 to get equally as tasty remasters. Vae Victus.
The team didn't just slap an HD filter over the game; they recognized the structural flaws of the original release and meticulously fixed them. The new free camera and Foresight navigation rescue the game from its 2003 limitations, allowing the unparalleled voice acting, gothic atmosphere, and brilliant narrative to take center stage. While the Deluxe Edition pricing strategies sting and the combat remains a bit floaty, the sheer amount of love poured into this release makes it an absolute triumph. Crystal Dynamics has finally given us our Nosgoth back—now, it's time for a real continuation.
As obvious as it may sound, Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered is the kind of re-release that will feel like a godsend to fans of the franchise (again, if they decide to ignore the mess caused by Ascendance), but one that won’t be a mandatory playthrough for those who aren’t well-versed in the franchise’s sizeable lore.
Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered updates a 2003 classic with beautiful high-definition textures, a modern free camera, and much-needed navigation tools. The combat remains repetitive and shows its age, but the legendary voice acting and deep lore make this an essential piece of gaming history for both newcomers and returning fans.
Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered is the love-letter to the swansong of a franchise long-forgotten, re-framed for the modern gamer. Featuring stellar presentation, updated graphics and gameplay, and a boatload of bonus content to boot, Defiance Remastered is a must play for fans of the franchise.
Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered is the perfect example of how to treat a classic with respect and good taste. It doesn't try to be something it's not, but rather reinforces what already worked, corrects what was necessary, and adds just enough to make it relevant today. An essential title for both veterans and those who want to discover one of the most unique sagas in video games.

Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered is yet another restored piece in the mosaic of Nosgoth’s stories. We must be honest, however: even twenty years ago, the game suffered from certain game design choices, including an action-oriented shift that perhaps wasn’t all that necessary. While less iconic than Soul Reaver, the game is now more beautiful than ever, bolstered by a script that hasn’t aged a day. The new 3D camera and a whole host of thoughtful improvements also make it more enjoyable today than it was back then, especially to play. A must-have for fans, but also a fundamental chapter for everyone else... in the hope that it might spark a true revival of this splendid saga.

It almost feels unfair to be too critical of the gameplay, as this is a product of its time. There were plenty of interesting, unique games for the sixth console generation. Although, it had plenty of generic stinkers as well! Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered doesn’t fit into either of these categories. It may not be the most enjoyable game in the series, but it still holds up relatively well to this day. Sure, combat can be a drag. But the captivating performances and narrative were more than enough to make me want to carry on to the end. If you’re a long-time fan wanting to rediscover an old favourite, or someone who only discovered the franchise thanks to Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered, then Defiance Remastered isn’t too bad for the price. Here’s hoping this series, just like Raziel, gets resurrected! Therefore, Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered receives the Thumb Culture Silver Award!
A game for hunters of nostalgia. Rose-tinted spectacles can be a blessing and a curse. Yet, Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered would need more than a positive outlook to overcome every problem. I think it is fun, but I adore the original. Therefore, it was always an easy sell. Yet, if you are expecting a modern aesthetic, smooth controls, and challenging combat, this will not be for you. However, if you love retro gaming, you should grab a copy from the Xbox store!
A brand new camera system, improved textures, and modern lighting effects are all noteworthy changes that deserve praises. The game also includes plenty of additional materials related to the lore of Nosgoth, plenty of behind the scenes production content, and even playable segments from a canceled sequel. However, it’s difficult to ignore the fact that these are once again locked behind a paid deluxe upgrade, which really shouldn’t be the case.

Although the team at PlayEveryWare tried to smooth over the flaws and shortcomings of Defiance Remastered, it’s hard to be entirely satisfied, as the abundance of pointless and unnecessary downloadable content can easily become overwhelming. The base game itself isn’t free of issues either, but it still fulfills the principle of being necessary and sufficient - more than enough for anyone who wants to finally see the story of Raziel and Kain through to its conclusion.

Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered feels less like a nostalgia grab and more like a genuine celebration. Not everything survives the passage of time—nor should we expect it to—but what truly matters is how this remaster restores dignity, context, and memory to one of gaming’s most daring and captivating sagas. Crystal Dynamics built a world unlike any other, a weave of destinies and philosophies that still has no real rivals. Seeing Kain and Raziel move, clash, and complete one another again brings back that rare feeling: the sense of witnessing a work that doesn’t just entertain, but demands to be remembered. This remaster isn’t perfect, yet it’s sincere—a love letter to Nosgoth and to those who never stopped hoping for its return. The extras, the archival care, the glimpse at what Dark Prophecy might have been: all of it turns this edition into a historical document as much as a game. A circle closing, yes, but still beating after twenty years, as only legends do.

Thanks to gameplay and a structure that are much more modern than the previous Legacy of Kain games remastered by Aspyr, Defiance is free to shine on modern systems. We highly recommend picking up this video game: you may miss out on some of the narrative background, but the excellent synergy between Kain and Raziel, combined with macabre and iconic settings, is a pleasure for the eyes and the mind.
