Gothic 1 Remake Reviews
Gothic 1 Remake is undeniably the best way to play this cult classic RPG, even if certain aspects of it have aged like milk.
Gothic 1 Remake may have made concessions for new players, but remains an RPG for people who think Daggerfall was the last good Bethesda game.
Gothic 1 Remake reinvents a timeless PC classic from the 2000s, and does so in a way that's bound to be controversial. The original Gothic was already a game that aged rather poorly, so remaking it in such a faithful way is admirable, but leaves the game without the ability to become what it could be.
Gothic 1 Remake is a superlative reinterpretation of an all-time classic game. Whilst the initial difficulty level and complete lack of handholding or quest markers etc. might be a hard sell to gamers used to more modern design choices, there is such a wealth of gaming experience to be enjoyed here. The obstacles set up mean that every small amount of progress feels hard earned and the sense of achievement is far greater than in many modern games. The sheer thrill of exploration and character choices make for an RPG that has been liberated from the technical limitations of its origin.
So if you're the kind of player who appreciates not having everything handed to you on a silver platter, has the patience to explore every corner, talk to all the NPCs, save your game constantly to avoid unpleasant surprises, and appreciates a realistic progression system... you're going to enjoy Gothic 1 Remake .

And while this was the first time, I have experienced this title, I can’t say that it was as good as some newer titles but also not as bad as some. It kind of exists, like its story, in the middle of the road.
Gothic 1 Remake is a faithful retelling of the original Gothic, warts and all. Perhaps too ambitious for its budget, it offers even hardened gamers a truly unique, hardcore roleplaying experience. While weighed down by a litany of bugs and issues, there is a lovingly made product underneath – but it's hard to recommend in its current state.
Gothic Remake is sort of there, taking everything from the past—glory, soul, and bugs—and throwing them in the face of today's gamers, who perhaps no longer have the time or patience to devote themselves to games of this caliber.

To its great credit, Gothic 1 Remake does not try to smooth out the challenge or design approach of the 2001 original, choosing instead to make significant graphical upgrades and add layers of improvement to combat and other mechanics.
The PS5 version of Gothic 1 Remake is held back by performance woes, but underneath this lies an iconic RPG with deeply immersive gameplay. For new players, it's hard to recommend the PS5 version in its current state, whereas fans who can look past the graphics and 30 FPS limit may find appreciation in this blast from the past.
Gothic Remake faithfully recreates the classic RPG, featuring detailed environments, high challenge, and a rugged yet captivating experience.

Unlike the original, the remake offers three different difficulty levels and a glossary where you can find out where previously discovered NPCs are located and what they offer – nevertheless, the experience is still uncomfortable and unforgiving for long stretches.

Gothic 1 Remake faithfully reconstructs a cult classic RPG from a team that clearly respected the original, and feels like a game from a bygone era largely for the better.
What Gothic 1 Remake brings to the table is a true-to-form remake of the original with a shiny coat of paint onto modern consoles, for better or worse.
Gothic 1 Remake definitely deserves praise for preserving everything good about the original release and for its revamped visuals. However, that isn't enough to excuse its poor performance and dated combat, facets crucial to the experience that actively prevent it from being easy to recommend.
Alkimia has delivered a game that captures the strengths of its predecessor, led by a brilliantly constructed world and the brutal harshness of life in the Mining Valley. Defying contemporary trends, Gothic Remake doesn’t hold the player’s hand and rewards them with a great sense of satisfaction as they make progress. It’s just a shame that we’ve ended up with a game plagued by so many bugs.

A memorable, atmospheric adventure that grinds down unsuspecting players before granting them any ounce of power, this remake of a role-playing game ahead of its time feels more frustrating than fresh.
Gothic Remake is not a game to be dismissed outright, and it manages to earn a narrow passing grade mainly thanks to what already worked twenty-five years ago: the constant sense of discovery, the satisfaction of overcoming seemingly impossible challenges, and the feeling of genuinely shaping the fate of the game world through your own choices.

For the hardcore fans of the franchise that just wanted a 1:1 remake of the original without anything added or removed, Gothic Remake is a dream come true. But even the avid Gothic fans are not safe from the performance horrors caused by the Unreal Engine 5, and that makes the Gothic Remake not everybody's cup of tea.
