Even if I wanted to try ponder, this game leaves no room for any "buts." The combination of visuals and sound is a true spectacle; the narrative magically blends story, pacing, and direction; and the experience proves to be a catharsis that's hard to shake off. Mixtape is simply, without any qualifiers, a real masterpiece.

If you can find similarities between the events in the mixtape and your own past, you can be sure you'll experience unforgettable emotions. Johnny Galvatron, please continue, but make it a bit more gamified. Thanks.

The nicest thing that can be said about Mixtape is that it has imaginative visuals and that the animation quality is pretty good. Adventure game fans won't find much intrigue or excitement because the experience is suffocatingly automated, and all the set-pieces offer no challenge. The biggest sin Mixtape commits is that it's ultimately insufferably boring and pretentious.

Stunning art direction and a stellar soundtrack are what makes Mixtape so wonderful. Its narrative isn't the most meaningful, but when everything else is so good, it hardly matters. This is a game that exists to be a short, enjoyable experience: its characters and story might not leave a lasting impression on you, but its music and visuals certainly will.

Mixtape is a narrative-driven experience that uses music, atmosphere, and character-driven storytelling to recreate the feeling of growing up in a way that feels deeply personal. It’s mechanically simple, but that simplicity allows its emotional core to stand out, making it one of the most memorable and affecting games in its genre.

Mixtape succeeds as a narrative adventure. It tells a coming-of-age story through a smart blend of visuals and music, delivering some genuinely fun moments along the way. Unfortunately, it's not a game for everyone.

Music has a power, pulling its listeners back in time or to a moment one can never let go of. Listening to a great Alice in Chains or Metallica song will always pull me back to positive memories of my late mother, for example. So Stacy’s musical journey in Mixtape hit me harder than I expected. While I wish its gameplay mechanics were more involved, the strong presentation, amazing soundtrack, and engaging narrative keep you glued to the controller until the credits roll. It’s a wonderful adventure full of heart. I can recommend it to any music lover out there.

This is a game more interested in emotional honesty than traditional challenge, and while that approach occasionally leaves certain gameplay ideas feeling undercooked, the overall experience lingered in my thinkin’ machine long after the credits roll.

Mixtape is a beautiful and musical coming-of-age game full of atmosphere, charm and visual flair. The soundtrack and art style take many scenes to the next level, but the limited interaction and lack of real emotional depth keep the game from fully resonating. A special experience, but not a modern classic.

"If you’re drawn to the fashion, music, and cinematic aesthetics of the three decades leading up to 2000s America, you’ll undoubtedly enjoy Mixtape and its magically simple charm. The soundtrack is masterfully curated, the direction is visually captivating, and the characters will stay with you long after it ends. You’ve probably seen — or even lived through — experiences similar to this before; but if you approach it in the right time and mood, it will surely become an unforgettable memory."

Without evoking the emotional depth of *Journey* or the intrigue of *What Remains of Edith Finch*, *Mixtape* strikes us more as a charming summer movie we’d casually watch on a repeat broadcast one August afternoon.

Mixtape is an experience that resembles watching a film more than anything else rather than actually participating in a game. Unfortunately, the little interactions you have in Mixtape are not enough to make up for the lack of actual gameplay.

Mixtape’s series of musical vignettes is a breath of fresh air and yet another example of how indie games can do it better. There’s so much variety in the activities you actually perform, but in the end it all boils down to a story about three kids who don’t have the easiest lives, find each other, and now have to face an uncertain future. It’s a hell of a throwback, with the soundtrack to end all soundtracks, and it literally brought me to tears through its fantastic writing and, like Stacy, knowing which song to play at just the right moment.

For a game I was so excited for, it didn’t deliver what I was expecting or hoping for at all. What I felt with Mixtape wasn’t blissful nostalgia brought about by a poignant narrative. What I felt was complete and utter bewilderment that such a pretentious, mediocre product is being absolutely glazed as brilliant perfection by nearly every other major outlet. There are no stakes, no dialogue choices, no secrets, no alternate endings. There’s nothing but a boring, hollow experience that had me questioning if the creators even knew what the 90s were like. So I ask again, am I missing something?

You know that sequence everyone talks about from Alan Wake 2? The one that was so acclaimed it was partly performed IRL at The Game Awards? Mixtape has ten of those. It never stops surprising, innovating, stirring the pot and pushing the boundaries of what a game can and should be. Mixtape is so good, and so entirely its own thing, that it has become my new favourite game. Even though I have already played through the entire game twice, I am going to complete it again and again. I have never felt so deeply connected to a game in my entire life.

Mixtape feels like a gift made specifically for millennials who still remember what life was like before it went completely digital. A game about friendship, music, goodbyes, and that painful feeling of realizing that certain phases end without asking permission.

Mixtape invites us into Stacey’s final day with her friends in town. Set to popular tracks from the '80s and '90s, it explores the character's unique humor, the spirit of youth, and teenage struggles from a surface-level yet touching perspective. The interactive sequences that draw us into the story are highly distinct, and as a whole, they make this light narrative flow effortlessly over its 3.5-hour runtime.

Mixtape captures the bittersweet essence of youth with remarkable precision — the blend of freedom, uncertainty, friendship, and the quiet fear that everything is about to change. It’s this emotional honesty that lingers long after the credits roll, making Mixtape a game that stays with you well beyond its final scene.

Mixtape succeeds in delivering a memorable narrative experience. Rather than relying on complex gameplay systems, the game builds its identity through music and cinematic direction, creating a journey filled with emotion and nostalgia. Because of that, it will strongly appeal to players who enjoy interactive storytelling and experiences that prioritize atmosphere and narrative over traditional gameplay mechanics.

Much like an actual mixtape, Mixtape messy in places, deeply personal, and likely to have a track or two that everyone can enjoy.
