Silent Hill: Townfall finds its own identity by taking the psychological horror of the franchise to 1990s Scotland. Its atmospheric setting, first-person exploration, and investigative puzzles are its biggest strengths, while repetitive stealth, uneven combat, and a narrative that loses some momentum toward the end keep it from reaching its full potential.

Silent Hill: Townfall is a very mixed experience. I like its protagonists, its Scottish setting steeped in brutalist architecture, and the changes Screen Burn has made to the series. The first-person perspective and the art direction and urban design in particular deserve a lot of praise. However, the decision to take the action underground, into dark corridors, completely destroys the otherwise excellent pacing and flow of the story. Without one particular enemy type, Townfall would probably be one of the best Silent Hill games I’ve ever played. Now, hanging over all the great moments and agonizingly tense sequences is one big toxic cloud that ruins the atmosphere. It’s a shame that one single element spoils what is otherwise a highly successful and genuinely atmospheric horror adventure. Or at least part of it.

Townfall brings decent puzzles and workable stealth, but its obvious storytelling and weak atmosphere leave it feeling like a rare miss for modern Silent Hill.

Silent Hill: Townfall makes a convincing case for psychological horror beyond familiar ground, pairing a superb Scottish setting with strong atmosphere and storytelling. Frustrating stealth and fading reliance on the CRTV keep an otherwise memorable descent from reaching greater heights.

Silent Hill: Townfall is the revival this franchise needed. By moving locations and shrouding the release in complete mystery, the team at Konami have delivered arguably the best horror game of 2026.

Silent Hill: Townfall continues to prove that taking Konami’s long dormant horror franchise on a world tour was the right choice, as Screen Burn has crafted an excellent narrative that gets the most out of its setting through weaving unique cultural trauma with the series’ distinct exploration of grief, backed by some stellar performances and visuals. Though the gameplay also has some great moments of its own, particularly in its puzzles, combat often stumbles into a mess of frustration and tedium, leaving the experience feeling admirable but uneven.

Silent Hill often aims to remind us that the real horrors aren’t the ones on screen, they’re the ones within us. As somebody who is fearfully weak to horror, and emotionally weak to a well-written narrative, Silent Hill: Townfall feels like what video games are supposed to be. It engaged me so much that it made me scream, and made me feel so much that it felt like my heart was sinking. Konami created a universe through which some of the most captivating stories can be told, and Screen Burn Interactive have told the best of its stories so far. Although I suspect it took a year or so off of my life, it was well worth it.

Like the intravenous needle permanently jutting out of its hero’s wrist, Silent Hill: Townfall gives this long running series a welcome shot in the arm.

Silent Hill: Townfall is just the right mix of old and new. It has classic psychological horror and grotesque monsters with the added benefit of the CRTV as a new puzzle solving and stealth tool.

It doesn’t quite reach the level of enjoyment I got out of Silent Hill f last year; however, there are a lot of elements that work incredibly well here, making this another strong entry in the franchise that I’d absolutely love to see inspire future games in the series.

Silent Hill: Townfall is the best the survival horror series has been in 25 years. Developer Screen Burn takes the series into first-person with a new remote Scottish town setting, breathing fresh energy into the franchise. But while some things change, Silent Hill's phenomenal atmosphere, visuals, and sound design remain. It's a horrific, often unsettling experience, but it's one that I never wanted to stop playing. $49.94 at Amazon $49.99 at Target Check Best Buy

Townfall shifts perspective, but not vision. Alluding to and projecting the saga's greatest hits, the journey to Scotland immerses us in a mystery that is less mystical and more psychological, a new, high-quality trauma worth experiencing.

Silent Hill: Townfall got its hooks into me pretty quickly, and I'm desperate to keep going back for more playthroughs. Purists might moan that it's once again not set within Silent Hill, but the series has always been more than just a physical location. It is an entity, a state of mind, a place where people are forced to confront the things they would rather leave buried. Townfall understands that. It takes the ideas, themes and psychological horror that make Silent Hill what it is and puts them somewhere new.
