Silent Hill: Townfall is just the right mix of old and new. It has classic psychological horror and grotesque monsters with the added benefit of the CRTV as a new puzzle solving and stealth tool.

Developer Screen Burn takes the series into first-person with a new remote Scottish town setting, breathing fresh energy into the franchise. But while some things change, Silent Hill's phenomenal atmosphere, visuals, and sound design remain. Silent Hill: Townfall got its hooks into me pretty quickly, and I'm desperate to keep going back for more playthroughs. Purists might moan that it's once again not set within Silent Hill, but the series has always been more than just a physical location. It is an entity, a state of mind, a place where people are forced to confront the things they would rather leave buried. Townfall understands that. It takes the ideas, themes and psychological horror that make Silent Hill what it is and puts them somewhere new.
Silent Hill: Townfall offers up one of the most tense and compelling survival horror experiences in recent years, as long as you're willing to meet it on its own terms.

Silent Hill: Townfall is another brave step forward for the franchise. Moving away from the traditional third-person perspective heightens the dread and anxiety, as you tentatively avoid the many threats that linger within.
Silent Hill: Townfall is a decidedly strong new entry in a series that has been straining to restore faith in itself. Townfall smartly draws on cultural anxiety in step with generally horrific imagery to make a game that more than earns the Silent Hill moniker. While I'm sure the next game we see will be totally different, I would love for this team to get another go. I think it gets a bit too brave with withholding vital information, and certain puzzles are utterly nightmarish, but I'd be missing the forest for the trees with how rich this game is.
Returning to the tried and trusted formula of the series' roots, Silent Hill: Townfall is a more traditional entry in the horror franchise that succeeds most when replicating what's come before it. The new Scottish setting is a standout, but its other new elements are a disappointment. Silent Hill: Townfall won't go down as a classic. However, there's still more than enough for returning fans to love.
The best parts of Alien Isolation and Resident Evil's first-person entries have merged with Silent Hill's rusty and foggy DNA to create an original nightmarish take on the series. Silent Hill: Townfall is a breath of fresh air for the genre and a must-play for horror fans.

It also brings plenty of strong ideas and gameplay concepts to the table, but more importantly, it once again proves that the appeal of Silent Hill is not limited to the place called Silent Hill.
