In the new The Sinking City, developers at Frogwares have swapped the detective-occultist gameplay for a survival horror experience. It’s a truly successful step into the genre: the combat is satisfying, and the environmental puzzles are highly inventive and engaging. Fans of the genre should keep The Sinking City 2 in mind. Those who enjoyed the first game may feel a slight disappointment, and although I initially had mixed feelings too, I ended up having a lot of fun with the game. Frogwares took a risk by ditching the detective elements, but it’s worked out very well.

The Sinking City 2 is ultimately worth it though because it’s a tasty slice of inexpensive survival horror that’ll satisfy, but you’ll just wish it aspired to be something more.
You’ll have a blast with The Sinking City 2 and its survival horror reboot. The atmosphere, the narrative, and the characters are all of extremely high quality, whilst it plays with genre ideas in confident and exciting ways. It’s a solid adventure with some good scares and surprises along the way, complemented by some exciting combat.

Shifting its approach to survival horror, The Sinking City 2 gets its inspirations right and closely follows the Resident Evil formula. Although the combat, the investigation and the character upgrades remain merely average and fail to fully realize their potential, the exploration and Lovecraftian atmosphere balance the scale toward a positive overall result.

The Sinking City 2 doesn't quite reach the level of polish in some of the lesser recent RE Engine Resident Evil entries, nor does it have what it takes to contend with the recent Silent Hill revival or even newcomers like Cronos: The New Dawn. It's a bit too derivative at its worst, and the looming shadow of its rotten predecessor still grips its design philosophy. It's a dramatic improvement for the most part, if a bit generic. There's a solid foundation here to be sure, even if it's still waterlogged. Horror fans will likely enjoy their time in Arkham due to the ambience and monsters, but it still needs more of an X-factor to go toe-to-toe with the major leagues.
The Sinking City 2 is an impressive game, especially when you consider the conditions under which it was made. It tries very hard to emulate the modern Resident Evil remakes, and for the most part, it succeeds at being a fun survival-horror game. Unfortunately, its flaws are more apparent. If you're looking for something appropriately horrific for the Halloween season, The Sinking City 2 has you covered.

The Sinking City 2 doesn't innovate in the third-person survival horror genre, but that's okay because of its unique world design. This handcrafted setting is fun to explore; it is full of distinctive characters, straightforward puzzles, and standard enemies. It also helps that the story is engaging enough if you are interested in H.P. Lovecraft, pulling from lore that is very cosmic-heavy and sometimes taking turns you do not expect, even if saving your unconscious lover isn't your cup of tea.
The Sinking City 2 was, for better or worse, everything I expected it to be. That was to say, an enjoyable trip through a land of horror and action. Even with the open areas that you get, you have a mostly linear experience that offers just enough freedom to find your own way and enjoy getting lost along the way. The narrative never hits the high I would have wanted but never sinks so low that I am let down. The combat is the element that should hold your attention more than anything, which is fun even at its worst.
The Sinking City 2 is an intriguing survival horror game with a bit of detective flavor that captivates with its atmosphere, story, and technical execution. If you’re expecting a detective adventure like the first game, you'll be disappointed. But if you're looking for a dark, linear horror game with a Lovecraftian vibe, you’ll get a solid experience.
