Deer & Boy that call out for a level of precision that is a little bit higher than what the rest of the game is capable of achieving in terms of accessibility. Readability of certain interactive elements is sometimes an issue. In its ambiguous conclusion, several threads are left hanging in the air, and depending on how much you like that sort of thing, you may find the ending to be poetic or unsatisfyingly vague.

Deer & Boy is very easy to recommend. It feels heavily inspired by classic animated adventures, but the relationship between the boy and the deer gives it enough personality to stand on its own. That relationship is ultimately what carries the entire experience. By the time the credits roll, it is genuinely hard not to feel attached to both characters after everything they go through together.

Deer & Boy is – for fans of the genre at least – a wonderful audiovisual experience but otherwise it remains a regrettably mediocre, yet sympathetic, story of loss and recovery.

It might not feel unique and it can be a bit easy, but the sheer emotional hook of Deer & Boy ensures it’s a gripping experience that fans of cinematic platformers won’t want to miss. It’s a stunning, tear-jerking exploration of both grief and friendship, and whilst it might not reinvent the wheel when it comes to puzzle-platforming, it executes its vision with so much charm and sincerity that you will easily forgive its shortcomings. It’s hard to go into what makes it so special without giving too many details away. Deer & Boy won’t win too many points for gameplay originality, but its heartfelt adventure will stay with me for a long, long time.

Despite its flaws, Deer & Boy is a small indie production that demonstrates how the video game medium can still tell intimate, moving stories without the need for big budgets.

Deer & Boy doesn’t try to reinvent anything, but it knows exactly the story it wants to tell and how to make you feel it. The echoes of Limbo are unmistakable, yet Lifeline Games goes beyond imitation: the intimate, almost therapeutic bond between the boy and his deer earns its own emotional space. Despite its short length and familiar structure, the game shines through its varied moments, careful staging, and a wordless relationship that grows naturally. It’s a small adventure, yes, but one that leaves a deeper mark than expected. By the time the credits roll, it’s clear that Deer & Boy isn’t just another Limbo‑like—it’s a gentle tale of two wounded creatures learning to walk together, and sometimes that’s enough to make the journey worthwhile.

With beautiful visuals, engaging gameplay that evolves throughout, and excellent sound design and music, Deer & Boy is a fantastic and polished cinematic platformer with a huge heart, but what impressed me most was how much it surprised me. What starts with the gentle, almost peaceful energy of a timid fawn grows to a crescendo as powerful and majestic as a fully grown stag, carrying its message of companionship and healing proudly upon its back.

Deer & Boy is an experience that relies more on feelings than explanations. Its silent narrative, the relationship built between the protagonists, and the excellent sound design create a journey capable of conveying emotions without resorting to dialogue or lengthy expository scenes. However, the experience ends up being hampered by a problem that is difficult to ignore: the way its puzzles are presented.

What a joy to discover when a game goes places you did not expect. From the outset, I thought this game would be an unassuming, cozy adventure about a young kid learning about nature. Oh, how I am glad to be wrong.
