In my humble opinion, Mortal Shell II surpasses the original. Whilst the first instalment made a particular impression with its Shell system, the second builds on that in an excellent way. The eight Shells, more extensive skill trees, Tarstones, Seals and sidearms give you a huge amount of freedom to create your own build. My Tiel, for example, evolved into a venomous shadow assassin who strikes from the darkness and can protect himself against poison. For me, that sort of experimentation is one of the game’s greatest strengths. On top of that, the combat feels a lot smoother than I remembered. The Posture mechanic gives parries more meaning, the Riposte remains delightfully brutal, and the sidearms add a fun extra dimension. Add to that the dungeons, puzzles and the many ways to further customise your Shell, and Mortal Shell II no longer feels like just another sequel, but like a game that’s finally starting to stand on its own two feet. And honestly? As far as I’m concerned, that Shell can stay wrapped around me for a while yet.

Mortal Shell 2 is one of those games that'll make you smile when remembering it, but frown when you recall the details. Its horrifying audiovisuals and polished combat create plenty of memorable moments, but repetitive stages, limited build variety, and a painfully slow narrative make it equally frustrating. Its content also falls short of justifying the $49.99 price against the competition. For all its strengths, Mortal Shell 2 gets the pieces right without quite putting them together.
Mortal Shell II expands upon the ideas of the first game with faster and deeper combat, a larger world, greater customization options, and impressive atmosphere, making it a successful and ambitious sequel. However, the game retains its own distinct identity, and Mortal Shell II could become one of the most notable soulslikes of the new generation.

Mortal Shell II cemented itself as one of my favorite ARPG’s up there with the best of FromSoftware. The changes to the combat make it fast and fierce while still maintain the difficulty I expect from these games. The expanded shells and weapons really help set it apart in the genre and allow for so much more build personality. This is truly one of the best games I’ve played this year, and I fully recommend it.
Mortal Shell 2 is one of the most surprising sequels I’ve ever seen, evolving practically every aspect of the first game while applying precise modernizations that don’t compromise the franchise’s DNA. A colossal AA title that holds its own against competitors with much larger budgets!

"Mortal Shell II" is an incredibly good game – both on its own and as a sequel to the original. The gameplay is consistently fun, and even though there aren't as many weapons or character customization options, it offers plenty of variety from beginning to end. The battles, especially against the many unique bosses, are another highlight. "Mortal Shell II" doesn't bring much that's innovative or completely new to the genre. But because it gets so much right as a whole, we can't help but wholeheartedly recommend it.
