STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT Reviews

Steins;Gate remains my favourite VN and one of my favourite time travel stories. For fans of that particular sub-genre of fiction, Re:Boot is an essential play and the new features add to the experience for both newcomers and long-time fans alike.
Steins;Gate RE:BOOT is one of the more intriguing visual novels that I have gotten to experience. It makes you think, makes you question choice, and makes you ponder how your own actions can reverberate outwards. This complex and rich story, coupled with some unique styling designs, will be a major sell to those looking to revisit this series. But if you are new to the visual novel universe, this one might be too convoluted (or too pricey) to gamble on.
After playing through the original and Elite years ago, I love how much I still enjoyed going back to Akihabara to re-experience Steins;Gate. Reboot doesn’t fix everything I wanted it to, especially that painfully slow first half, but the new material and Worldline gave me enough surprises to make another trip worthwhile. It’s still the same story I fell in love with, just with a few new reasons to get attached to it all over again.
Steins;Gate Re:Boot is a journey through time, taking us back to the memories of one of the best visual novels ever released. The power of its convoluted plot and its absurd characters is still electrifying, and there’s even new material for longtime fans to discover. However, there are a few reservations, as this edition may not be all that essential for those who’ve already played the original game: the new content isn’t exactly unmissable, and some longtime players might prefer the original artwork. Furthermore, there are still a few technical issues to be resolved, particularly for players on Steam Deck. With these caveats in mind, Steins;Gate Re:Boot is an absolutely unmissable story for those who’ve never experienced it, and a must-have purchase for science fiction fans.

STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT is a game that rewards your patience with some incredible storytelling. The character work is top-notch, and the updated visuals, streamlined story beats, and excellent performances make this easy to recommend to anyone looking for a new story to dive into.
If you’re waiting for the console release, Steins;Gate Re:Boot won’t be out until October, but PC fans have only another week to wait for the new version to be out. For those who’ve held torches, your long watch is nearly over. Re:Boot is the definitive edition of Steins;Gate, and is a word of love for both the characters within and the fans throughout. It’s an incredible rendition of a beloved tale, and it still feels as fresh, surprising and engrossing as it did years ago. Be ready to dive back in and take control of your future and your past: this present contains some amazing gifts.
Overall, STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT is an impressive visual novel that offers a fresh and visually refined way to experience one of the most iconic science-fiction titles in the genre. While the newly added storyline may feel somewhat brief and lack the impact of the original narrative, the strength of the core story remains undeniable. Whether experienced for the first time or revisited by returning fans, this definitive reimagining is highly recommended for anyone interested in exploring one of the medium’s most celebrated works.

Despite not adding anything major, Steins;Gate Re:Boot is an excellent retelling of one of the greatest time travel stories in all of media. With a lovable cast of characters and an unforgettable, emotionally charged narrative, it truly is an experience everyone should have at least once. El Psy Kongroo.
STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT is a science fiction visual novel that seeks to enhance the original STEINS;GATE visual novel’s reading experience by featuring redrawn art assets, rerecorded voice lines, an updated soundtrack, a few additional scenarios, and a polished modern UI. By drawing inspiration from the charm of the traditional visual novel format and the updated flow in STEINS;GATE ELITE, it brings its well-loved time travel story to 2026 for old fans to relive and for younger fans to experience for themselves. With the incorporation of the E-mote system as part of its visual presentation, STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT’s cast exudes liveliness previously unseen in previous versions. It achieves the balance of providing entertaining motions to the characters without transitioning into a fully animated title like ELITE, avoiding the weaknesses that format brings. Overall, I do think that despite its shortcomings (see: the handling of the character 4°C), STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT is now the best way to experience the Future Gadget Lab’s journey through Rintarou’s eyes. It’s definitely worth a try, and I highly recommend it for both old and new lab members. With that being said, there is still the consideration of prices across all of the available versions. In terms of experiencing the full story, the original STEINS;GATE fulfills that purpose well enough for half the price point ($30) of the two other versions, ELITE and RE:BOOT, which are both at $60. ELITE, on the other hand, is bundled together with the side story Linear Bounded Phenogram as a package. Honestly, it’s a pretty opportunistic move given that you’re forced to get the animated version of the visual novel if you wanted to read the spin-off. Fortunately, these versions go on sale frequently enough that getting both of them is still probably cheaper than RE:BOOT will be for a good while. You’d be missing out on the new features that RE:BOOT offers, but they’re more fanservice additions than requirements to fully appreciate the STEINS;GATE world. Regardless, RE:BOOT is definitely worth the try, and I highly recommend it for both old and new lab members alike.
Steins;Gate Re:Boot is disappointing in some ways, but it works much better than the ELITE version, for example. Even with its flaws, I still enjoyed rereading this story, precisely because the characters and the narrative are so engaging, and that remains completely intact here. And, even though I don’t agree 100% with the decisions being made by MAGES, I still really like Steins;Gate and am curious to see what the future of the series will hold from here on out.

Steins;Gate Re:Boot successfully brings a classic science fiction narrative into the present day, enhanced with modern visuals and an all new ending. Although it stands as one of the pinnacles of the visual novel genre, it doesn’t offer much in the way of significant changes for players who have already experienced the original series.
