Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 is more of what Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun delivered, but with meaningful changes. It has great music and punchy sound effects, a new character to play, and replayability with meaningful accessibility options. Although there are some bugs that can break the flow and be disheartening, Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 is worth playing if you loved Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 is essentially the perfect sequel. As much as I enjoyed the original, this old boomer shooter veteran had a few gripes with how loosely it adhered to the genre’s conventions. Boltgun 2 not only addresses those issues, but practically John Romero’d me for ever questioning whether it would just be more of the same. It’s a loud, brutal, gloriously gory experience, packed with excellent level design, surprising set pieces, and an enormous branching campaign that had me jumping straight back in the moment the credits rolled.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 never stops making you feel like the biggest boss in a room full of heretical scum. The only downside is the obvious illusion of choice between its two protagonists’ branching missions, as picking one over the other barely changes the campaign beyond their different abilities. But not even that can overshadow its brutally satisfying gameplay, which delivers nonstop action with a fresh variety of levels that let you explore its miserable, grimdark world without overstaying their welcome. At least you have the Emperor on your side.

In every way that a sequel can and should improve over its predecessor, Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 succeeds. A thunderously crunchy and wholly entertaining boomer shooter that firmly plants a steel-capped boot up the rear end of Games Workshop's most recognisable setting, Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 is essential fare for fans of both its titular dark sci-fi setting and classic first-person shooters. For the God-Emperor!

Similarly to its predecessor, Boltgun 2 is a solid old-style shooter that is consistently good, but never excellent.

It remains a highly effective homage to classic boomer shooters and Warhammer 40,000.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 improves upon the original with tighter level design and outstanding visuals. Giving players the choice between Sister of Battle Nyra Veyrath and Ultramarine Malum Caedo adds a lot of variety to the gameplay, as both move differently and have a different roster of weapons.

Its old-school formula can mean it feels a little repetitive at times, but Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 is a sequel that's undoubtedly bigger and better, with more replayability thanks to its two playable characters and branching paths in its campaign.

This is a sequel well worth playing if you’re even remotely into boomer shooters. The subtle new features introduced—two characters, a branching campaign, and more—suit it perfectly and reinforce the already solid gameplay foundation that captivated thousands of players upon its release in 2013. Aside from needing a slight improvement in enemy AI, this is a highly entertaining title that will delight anyone who enjoys fast-paced first-person action.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 directly addresses the primary shortcomings of its predecessor through more complex level design, a greater variety of enemies, and the inclusion of two playable characters, each with unique combat mechanics. While the reduced emphasis on the narrative and occasional AI glitches are not major issues, the game delivers a satisfying experience for both fans of this genre of shooters and enthusiasts of the Games Workshop universe.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 takes everything that worked in the first game and multiplies it, with two well-balanced protagonists, finally even-handed weapons and memorable boss fights, and while it stays far too anchored to tradition to truly surprise, it proves to be an excellent retro FPS that's a blast from start to finish.

I wouldn’t say it’s a must-play for anyone looking for a casual FPS. There are other titles that can offer a more complete experience in different aspects, and the retro aesthetic alone may not appeal to everyone. However, if you have any interest in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, Boltgun 2 is an easy recommendation—especially considering its price.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 is a competent and safe sequel that expands on its core pillars, delivering more robust gameplay—now featuring two distinct heroes to boost replayability—and stunning pixel-art environments across various distinct biomes. However, certain gameplay mechanics, such as the weapon-switching system, could use further refinement. While the plot isn't the main focus, it could have benefited from a bit more care; nevertheless, this does not overshadow the quality of this well-executed boomer shooter.

Boltgun 2 understands that the main pleasure of a boomer shooter lies in constant movement, quickly reading the environment, and that almost musical sensation of switching weapons while dozens of enemies are destroyed. At the same time, the Warhammer 40,000 setting never feels like just a generic skin placed over this structure.
