The delicate and skilled operation of a high performance vehicle projects Gran Turismo Sport's utopian vision. Its factitious structure and inattentive principles remind the player that it operates in an unstable reality. Gran Turismo Sport lives in a world of sportsmanship and prestige and doesn't much care if would-be residents find its narrow paradise aloof and inhospitable.

Make no mistake – Gran Turismo Sport is fun to play and is a surprisingly fresh step (in a different direction) for the developers, but it feels like it comes at a cost for many reasons – the lack of variation in cars and manufacturers, the shallow depth in single-player (and even offline mode) campaigns, and even a lot of the tuning and adjustment features are missing from the game.

With GT Sports, the Gran Turismo series steers towards eSports and accelerates its transition to multiplayer online gameplay only. The solidity of its racing rules & regulations and gaming netcode will be fundamental for its success.

And when the day comes that we can witness all the wonderful detail and beauty of Polyphony Digital's creation, via watching a replay of a crash-free online race set at night along the rain-soaked roads of Tokyo, this could become something truly special.

Polyphony Digital's choice to focus mainly on the online modes doesn't feel as a good way to promote Gran Turismo Sport, which might be fun to play and sometimes beautiful to watch, but fails to offer something really interesting when compared to competitors' racing experiences. Kazunori Yamauchi's latest project is definitely an ambitious project but it doesn't feel as a successful opera, due to the lack of what made Gran Turismo so appreciated in past iterations of the franchise.

With its excellent focus on online multiplayer supported with some innovative fair-play features and related social features, Gran Turismo Sport is a great choice for drivers focused on those aspects. For offline players and those that don't want to grind to gain access to an extensive collection of cars and tracks, though, there are better alternatives.

GT Sport is an ambiguous title. Game modes are very few, but rather well characterized. The absence of career mode is heavy, but the presence of other mechanics can somehow overcome the problem. Very interesting is the "photo-mode" that allows to photograph the car from different angles.

Gran Turismo Sport delivers a solid racing experience but can't keep up with the competition this year and suffers from the lack of a career mode and a questionable game structure for the series. If you expect a beautiful and beginner friendly racing game, you'll still enjoy it.

GT Sport's shift away from the normal structure of racing titles was a risky bet. It pays off for racing purists, but those who judge a game solely by the number of tracks, cars, and modes it has may be a little disappointed.

Time will tell whether future updates will will go a long way to add some meat on top of the strong bones that make Gran Turismo Sport.

This new GT has many qualities, but it manages to disappoint its fans and to be very perfectible, especially on the thing he wanted to excel at: the online races.

Further ReadingLogitech G29 and G920 racing wheels coming to PS4 and Xbox One [Updated]I played the game mostly with a Logitech G29, which might be the optimum way to experience it. Be warned—the game only supports a handful of wheels, although there are a number of adapters you can find online for $50-$60 that should let you use an unapproved one. (We make no promises about the ease of use with any of those, however.) Additionally, you have many fewer settings to tweak compared to Forza or Project CARS, but the flip-side of that is that setting up a wheel is easy, and I had no complaints with feel or force-feedback.

The focus on sport and competition is the game's most impressive asset

Gran Turismo Sport represents a sharp change in direction for a beloved brand – and only time will tell whether that move proves shrewd. The game sets a new standard for online simulation racing on consoles, and for that it must be praised, but in its efforts to educate it's shed the series' revered single player structure – and almost certainly a fair few fans along the way.

If you were interested in Gran Turismo: Sport, please hold off on your purchase until several important updates are available. It's a really great racing game worth playing, but not yet.

Gran Turismo Sport is a good game, and yet, it's still a disappointment. Given this series' pedigree, good simply isn't good enough. GT Sport still brings it on the track, but its lack of content can't be ignored, and you can't give the game top marks in world where Forza Motorsport 7 and Project CARS 2 exist. If you're a diehard fan of Sony's series or really into online racing, GT Sport is worth a shot. If you just want the best racing sim out there, you may want to kick some more tires.

It's far too early to say if Gran Turismo Sport is the final word when it comes to eSports style racing on consoles. The on-track action is excellent, but the remainder of the package is severely lacking at this point in time.

Through its celebration of both the art and intricacies of driving and the cars that make it such a joy, GT Sport is a stunningly classy racing experience. It handles wonderfully and does all it can to make you a better driver through its campaign's structure.

If you're a die-hard Gran Turismo fan, or just can't get enough online racing, this would be a good pickup for you. Otherwise, you're better off with either of the other two big racers of the season.
