Cursed Castilla is one of the best modern retro games that I’ve played, successfully capturing the look and feel of its influences but also improving on the controls and level design. It feels just like the way I remember the arcade originals.

While the name may be confusing, this could easily be a blueprint for the successor to Ghosts ‘n Goblins, which is what it seems they set out to do, and they nailed it.

Cursed Castilla EX certainly feels like the kind of game it tries to be and it's certainly very good at creating a tough as nails sidescroller that could have perfectly been made in the 1990s. Thanks to its magnificent level design, large amount of content, replay challenge and overall incentives to keep playing, this is one of the most welcome efforts in the contemporary sidescrolling genre.

With its unforgiving retro platforming nature, Cursed Castilla EX will undoubtedly be a divisive game. It has its minor flaws and blurs the homage line on occasion, but fans of the genre looking to step back in time to the classic days of coin-munching arcade games will find this recreation of that era to a be a treat. A treat that may just leave you contemplating murder on occasion.

A pure tribute to the arcade games of the 80s, like Ghost'n Goblins or Rastan. It is a not a mere copy but it has a own soul, universe and mythology inspired by the medieval spanish tradition.

Fans of the borderline-masochistic nature of old-school action-platformers like Ghosts 'n Goblins and Castlevania will adore Cursed Castilla EX. It's a punishing affair that can be replayed again and again to reach high scores and unlock alternate endings. Players with a lower tolerance for pain and a disinterest in leaderboards should probably stay away.

Graphically Maldita Castilla EX is beautiful; so much love and care was put into every pixel on the screen and the addition of scanlines create an almost perfect arcade experience

Cursed Castilla is a refined Ghost'n Goblins, with a fair and appropriated level of challenge. The story is a mere background and little instigates the curiosity. The graphics and soundtrack are simple, replicating the rudimentary elements of its source of inspiration. However, the action and the core of the gameplay are rewarding, and in the end, that's what matters most to a video game.

Despite the easy pick up and play aspect, the game is certainly tough and not for the inexperienced. You'll die a lot in this one and lose all of the weapons and items you were carrying. But every time you'll make a bit of progress towards a chapters mid-boss or boss, chipping away at the game bit by bit. This is a great homage to old-school action games from back in the day, and it does things properly by adding its own twist on things. If you're looking for a hardcore 2D action game on PS4, then you should give Cursed Castilla a go!

Cursed Castilla is a very fun homage to old-school action platformers of ages past. It does good by the games that had an influence over it, such as Ghosts 'n Goblins, Black Tiger, and Shinobi, to name a few, while still being very much a different game altogether. Its mix of mythology from several cultures with a noted main influence from Spain's own mythology gives this a very interesting twist. If you're looking for a hardcore action platformer on PS4, you should definitely check out Cursed Castilla!

Cursed Castilla: Maldita Castilla EX is a perfect example of the kind of well-crafted, hair-pulling experience that adventure fans know all too well. Controls are precise, the retro look is as authentic as you'll get without modern flourishes, and the gameplay feels perfect, even if it is highly difficult. Some will dislike the tedious means of getting a better ending, but those who cut their teeth on the 16-bit era of platformers will be right at home here.

Retro to its heart, Cursed Castilla EX incorporates suggestions from medieval paintings, locations and chivalry novels - The Amadis of Gaul above all - on top of a plethora of arcade evergreens, such as Black Tiger, Rygar and Rastan. It's a compendium of arcade perfection, and, as such, it comes exceptionally recommended. Now, if only the good people at Abylight would consider porting over The Curse of Issyos, Hydorah and Gaurodan, too…

The whole time it felt like I was playing a classic SNES Virtual Console game, with a killer soundtrack and added 3D effects. If simple old-school gameplay, beautiful pixel art, and a hardcore difficulty is up your alley, then this game is a no-brainer. So take your sword and expel the curse of the land, not for the King, but for Castilla!.

Cursed Castilla EX is an arcade like before, worthy to rub shoulders with the greats of the sword and witchcraft action platformer genre, who populated arcade rooms in the late 80s. Drink from the greats and do it well, very well , respects fidelity but takes the result several steps further by adding mechanics that perhaps had not been thought of before. It may not be a game for all audiences due to its marked arcade character and its duration based on the mastering of the game, but every gray-haired gamer will know how to see the magic of this game, and above all with a native mythology.
