Dragon Quest Builders is totally, thoroughly engaging. Its gameplay is accessible to kids while its dialogue offers enough sly references to keep Dad or Mom amused. Collecting, crafting, and building all sounds familiar, but this package encapsulates so much of the best parts of this creative process and wraps it in light roleplaying progression and storytelling. It doesn’t matter that there isn’t a multiplayer component, because it wouldn’t have contributed to the world. So that means this is a gold-standard RPG for the non-connected gamer to flex all their cerebral muscles wherever they want it to go.

All in all Dragon Quest Builders is an absolutely spectacular surprise. For me, it's a far superior experience to Minecraft. It’s topped off by having an end goal. Credits that roll and bosses that need defeating give the entire experience genuine purpose. I’ve had next to no interest in the sandbox building genre up to this point, however there’s enough structure here to compel me to push onwards. And onwards. And onwards. Someone save me.

Dragon Quest Builders is a stunning balance of build and adventure. I was incredibly skeptical that the two genres would ever evenly mix, but somehow Square Enix found the right spots and put together one helluva package for Dragon Quest and Minecraft fans to enjoy. It’s really quite good and addictive.

Dragon Quest Builders, despite its issues, brilliantly marries the sandbox survival gameplay style with traditional Japanese RPG storytelling. Fans of the franchise will feel right at home with a whole roster of familiar monsters to fight and a nostalgia-filled soundtrack. Whatever your play-style, whether it be story progression or building to your heart's content, you can expect to pour countless hours into this game and continue to be entertained. Dragon Quest Builders is easily one of the best games of 2016 and quite possibly the most addictive.

Dragon Quest Builders gives the genre's heavy hitters a run for their money with its charm, character, and accessibility. A streamlined crafting experience that's always happy to provide you with purpose, it offers a delightful adventure that's packed with discovery. Even though a couple of wonky design choices prevent proceedings from being totally watertight, this is still one of the most downright addictive titles available on the PS4.

If either Dragon Quest or base-building games appeal to you, try it with an open mind and a willingness to buck convention.

Obviously the appeal of Dragon Quest Builders is the universe it’s set in, but there’s also the appeal for younger audiences who will find the guided nature of this sandbox JRPG an inviting and accessible proposition. It’s far from perfect, but it’s a good effort and another potentially successful spin-off.

Dragon Quest Builders is an excellent building sandbox woven together with JRPG threads. It allowed me to have fun with the gameplay in a genre I wouldn't usually care for.

Dragon Quest Builders continues in the series' tradition of being slightly cumbersome and unpolished, but getting lost in its toybox pleasures is easy and extremely fun.

Sadly, Dragon Quest Builders isn’t quite the Dragon Quest meets Minecraft mash-up that I was really hoping for. What it does, however, is offer an engrossing adventure that proves giving a world-building engine some storyline, characters, and proper combat goes a long way.

I went into this review with rather low expectations, and wound up with a title that I would recommend highly to any owner of a PS4.

It is sandbox gaming on rails, giving players just enough freedom to deserve its genre placement without exposing them to an overwhelming array of resources and recipes. Gating some content behind the game’s narrative progression may irritate those with substantial genre experience. But the system provides a streamlined sandbox experience for those of us with less time; a design philosophy that clearly sets Dragon Quest Builders apart from the competition.

Dragon Quest Builders has a little for each and is much fun for everyone, it is a game with solid mechanics, a superb narrative from the hand of Square Enix, an epic soundtrack and a singular graphic style with a lot of personality that will certainly give you hours of entertainment at the cost of many laughable moments, determination and creativity!

A surprisingly successful mash-up between two completely different franchises, whose quiet charms offer a welcome alternative to incessant action and overbearing storytelling.

Dragon Quest Builders does and exceptional job of implementing a proven formula from a game that sold so well Microsoft decided to buy it, but it doesn’t stop there. DQB improves on that formula and give players a more well rounded, fuller experience. Its a guided experience but its this structure that makes the game both addictive and rewarding.

Dragon Quest Builders is a great action RPG at its core mixed with the world building and exploration aspects of Minecraft. It is an excellent spin-off from the Dragon Quest series that has an easy learning curve and should be a fun experience for everyone.

No, Dragon Quest Builders won’t take everyone off the Minecraft building path, but it’s a great diversion for those that can’t get into that game, or simply want a role-playing hook that rewards them as they continue on quests and fight against the Dragonlord’s minions. It’s a fun follow-up to last year’s The World Tree’s Woe and the Blight Below, offering a unique take that will attract a different kind of audience. There’s nothing wrong with building on that.
