It might come from a small development team, it might be rough around the edges, but it's could be one of 2017 most unexpected RPG hits that more people should be aware of.

Many bugs in console version and shortcomings cause a slight disappointment. But at the same time Battle Chasers: Nightwar remains an enthralling and strong RPG, which can be even better after all the fixes. In the meantime, the console version is worth playing only if you really miss turn-based battles and fabulous adventures.

Like the original comic book series, Battle Chasers: Nightwar looks fantastic but feels a bit hollow. The game's JRPG battle system and Diablo-style dungeons are rock solid but don't bring many new ideas to the table. If you're really into Joe Madureira's art or grinding for loot, you'll find plenty to like here, but the general RPG audience may find the game slightly lacking in flavor. Not bad at all, just a little flat. Perhaps it's unsurprising that a video game, based on a comic book, based on earlier video games feels like it's spreading its inspiration a bit thin.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar is a grand achievement from a small studio that needed a big win. It's not everyday you get to play a game that tends to reward you for everything you do. Great combat, fantastic dungeon exploration, incredible visuals and a great soundtrack. Battle Chasers: Nightwar hits all the marks

Atmospheric, very pretty dungeon crawler with tactically exciting and complex round strategy fights in a living comic world.

Battle Chasers: Nightwars is a damn good update to JRPGS of old, carrying the genre into 2018 without sacrificing what made it so appealing to begin with. The fact it's now portable on the Switch just makes it better still.

Airship Syndicate brings a title where some points fail, such as optimization or a more immersive soundtrack, but has an excellent artistic section, a very intuitive combat system and an acceptable duration, which will be the perfect excuse for those who have never dared to take turn-based RPG games.

Battle Chasers fans will be pleased to know that Joe Madureira's work has found a new home in the gaming industry that we'll certainly see more of. But perhaps more importantly, as someone who never knew about the source material before playing the game, I'll be keenly looking forward to its next entry too.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar is a fine example of how to iterate and improve upon a tried-and-true game genre wth its take on a modernized turn-based RPG. It's far from perfect, but the combat system alone is engaging enough to warrant a recommendation for any fan of old-school JRPG-style adventures.

Battle Chasers : Nightwar ends up being a solid RPG with some deep combat systems and interesting components, in a lovely universe. But beware of the fact that it needs you to grind a lot, and so accept redondance and a few huge breaks in the progression, and that some crashing issues and bugs can truly poison your experience on PS4.

It can be extremely difficult to introduce a new game into a genre long dominated by one company and franchise, but Battle Chasers: Nightwar is a modern and expertly executed take on everything turn-based RPGs introduced to gamers so many years ago. It's a reminder that old ways don't have to die away; they just need the right people to hone in on what made the genre work in the first place.

This unique JRPG inspired title might have flown under-the-radar last year, but its a game worth making space for from a crowded 2017.

Battle Chasers is a game full of attractions that will last for more than 40 hours of fun. It’s not important whether you noticed Joe Madureira’s new game because of its jRPG heritage, its connection to a series of comic books or its extremely pretty graphics. All these reasons are good, because the game is good. Very good!

Battle Chasers: Nightwar is an insanely good title with classic role-playing game mechanics. The art design and animation are quite unmatched, and it's a pleasure to experience newly discovered areas for that alone. The battle system is more in-depth than most RPGs released today, but it is a shame the sheer amount of grinding you have to do to keep pace with the narrative. I also experience more than a handful crashes and bugs that forced me to quit the game. One, in particular, failed to load the boss for a side mission, not letting me progress any further down the quest chain.
