Tokyo Xanadu eX+ is the definitive version of one of my favourite games of the year and a fantastic overall package for JRPG fans

Tokyo Xanadu eX+ will find that jumping into the series was well worth it. On the other hand, fans who have already played the game will discover a large variety of new events to play through as well as a much-improved battle system than what they remember. I had a great with Tokyo Xanadu eX+ and now I'm left with the new post-game quests that will probably add many more hours to my play time.

When the game is at its best, however, it is an enjoyable dungeon runner that features intriguing, fun combat, and it's definitely worth playing for those who never experienced the original Tokyo Xanadu for PS Vita—just with the caveat that players will need to stomach a lot of flavorless JRPG tropes to get to what makes Tokyo Xanadu eX+ tasty enough to merit its forty-hour-long runtime.

Tokyo Xanadu eX + is quite an interesting adventure that lacks in budget and story departments compared to Persona, but still is very decent, thanks to well-designed characters, combat system and interesting bosses.

Tokyo Xanadu eX+ is a wonderful way to spend several hours thanks to a delightfully fun combat system. The standard JRPG storyline means everything feels very familiar, but it's not all bad. Overall, the game's nothing special -- certainly not to look at -- but there's at least plenty of content here, and the title does a decent job of keeping things fresh.

While by no means a bad game, Tokyo Xanadu eX+ certainly isn't a remarkable one. Falcom fans might find some things to like here, but there's little to court anyone else.

The proper way of playing Tokyo Xanadu, if you don't care about portability that is.

A really good jRPG based on urban legends and set in the suburbs of modern Tokyo.

2017 may have been an exhausting year filled with quality videogame releases across different genres and multiple platforms, but Tokyo Xanadu eX+ is still worth setting aside some time for, especially for those starving for more Action RPG hybrids.

The heart and soul of the original Tokyo Xanadu is alive and well, buttressed with new characters, dungeons, monsters, features, and technology.

While there can be quite a bit of hand-holding, which may turn off more hardcore fans of the genre, Tokyo Xanadu eX+ offers a great respite from other, bigger holiday releases. If you've got some time this holiday to sit down with a meaty JRPG, this one might just be the one for you.

Nihon Falcom used to be a pioneer in the game industry. They revolutionized action RPGs and set the standard with awesome character art. Tokyo Xanadu eX+ feels like a fall from grace. Now Falcom copies whatever is trendy. They recycle concepts and assets and the art used in Tokyo Xanadu eX+ is utterly bland and generic. It is an unfortunate sign of the times that Falcom has resorted to these practices to keep going and stay afloat in an industry that is spiraling out of control.

There is a new Tokyo Xanadu on the way, ten years after this first one was released. Whether you’re playing this for the first time, or taking the opportunity to refresh yourself before enjoying the new one, you won’t regret spending time with this new localisation.

Tokyo Xanadu eX+ is a great ARPG and has an excellent world building to tell its story. The main plot might not surprise, however it is well told and the minor stories make the whole game more interesting. Conquering a labyrinth after facing many traps and monsters is rewarding and some of the bosses are a show by themselves due to their interesting attack patterns. Tokyo Xanadu is recommended to those who like a world well built and that like ARPG with simple combat mechanics.

In the full spectrum of things, Tokyo Xanadu eX+ is a title that offers just enough to be considered entertaining, but not so much that it tries to excel in its genre.

Tokyo Xanadu eX+ is a solid action RPG on PlayStation 4 with good gameplay mechanics and a heavy emphasis on its story and setting. It's a meaty adventure with 50+ hours ahead of you, and even longer if you want to aim at getting a new Platinum for your collection. The improvements made over Tokyo Xanadu on PS Vita for this PS4 port make this a better overall game and one that is easy to recommend.

Tokyo Xanadu eX+ can be a fun experience even if you have already finished the base game. The improvements to the visuals and frame rate are a welcome addition, but the addition of new content makes it the definitive version.

Even though Tokyo Xanadu borrows heavily from the Persona series, it still has enough personality in it to be wholeheartedly entertaining. While not as deep and brooding as the evident source material, Tokyo Xanadu still managed to be a surprisingly enjoyable experience. The enormous cast of characters with rich side stories made the world feel bustling with life, while the real-time twitch battles meant combat had more staying power than if it went the typical turn-based approach. Tokyo Xanadu might not be the most innovative title out there, but it manages to blend its ideas well enough that every JRPG fan should at least give it a try.

The biggest challenge I found with the game was finding the motivation to actually finish it; it might not get anything wrong, but it's such a lengthy quest that it really needed a greater thematic depth to maintain my interest, and unfortunately it wasn't quite able to replicate Nihon Falcom's own, brilliant, Trails of Cold Steel in offering that.
