So, an open world Dynasty Warriors. One certainly must commend Omega Force for constantly trying to innovate with their games rather than just churn out the exact same thing with marginally improved graphics with every installment. However, as the most recent in a long-running series, it begs the question: should you buy this one with all of it's faults or should you just stick with the last one, which sticks closer to the formula that made the games so beloved? Well, that depends on what you're looking for. The combat is a lot smoother than in the past games, and though the characters can be a tad one-note and the dialogue can be a tad wooden there is more of an effort to show rather than tell, and of course the graphics have vastly improved. At the same time, the pace of the game outside of the combat is a lot slower, the voice acting really could use improvement, and of course the change of genre leaves just the one game mode and no local multiplayer. It feels more like an adventure than a war, which I'm sure would excite some fans while disappointing others. However, I'm not here to review the entire franchise, I'm here to review this one game. So for a moment let's erase all comparisons to past games. How is Dynasty Warriors 9 as it's own singular entity? Well, it certainly has it's faults, but it's definitely a ton of fun if a tad easy for an open world RPG. The combat is smooth and satisfying, the farming and crafting aspects may not be electrifying but they aren't annoying, the map is pretty large, and even the story and dialogue has the camp and occasional hilarity of one of those foreign B-movies you find on netflix so you grab some friends and a pizza and have a jolly good time laughing it up at the unintentional hilarity. Even the stuff in here that could annoy some, like the homemaking and the gathering, isn't something the game forces you to do, so you can just ride around like the unstoppable war machine you are. While the game may be a tad lackluster as far as being an entry in this particular series goes, as a game in it's own right I think Dynasty Warriors 9 is definitely worth checking out when it goes on sale. It has some good aspects, has some hilariously bad aspects. I can recommend it, but 60 bucks is a bit steep for B-movie camp. Aside from that, I think it's definitely a game to check out.

Musou style games often struggle to stand out from the rest of the pack as a result of the similar gameplay and mission structures. Dynasty Warriors 9 goes against this trend by managing to expand on the typical musou formula with a big open world experience for the first time in the series that pairs well with the familiar gameplay and story, which all combine to make a very enjoyable game that are built for veterans and newcomers alike.

Perhaps the game need to improve more and make the changes to the open world so it fit in there and bring more than a wide area to free roam and add more time to play to the game only, the Japanese developer is afraid of change but the one whom changed gains gold era now and appreciation and others needs to get out of PlayStation 2 era.

There are a lot of exciting moments in Dynasty Warriors 9, both those related to the story or bloody clashes, but this does not match the many other problems the game has, whether the virtual world design and the size of the activities it provides, or tasks that become repetitive and similar after a period, or The characters, some of which share the same weapons and combat tactics, add to the limited level of animation, sounds and user interface, making the title many years late for many open world games.

Where previous games allowed players to feel powerful by defeating an absurd number of dumb enemies, Dynasty Warriors 9 cuts out the middle man, leaving a shallow game feeling completely hollow.

After the resounding success of Dynasty Warriors 8, Dynasty Warriors 9 feels like a major step back. What's lost in the move towards an individually-centered story spread across a massive open world far outweighs the minor benefits that are gained. While the excellent button-mashing gameplay stays intact with great tweaks and additions, it wasn't enough. The lack of multiplayer, missing alternate game modes, and emptiness of ancient China left me far from satisfied.

Dynasty Warriors 9 its an interesting new approach to a series that was starting to look stagnant. Albeit its not perfect and has many flaws, the new elements like the open world and State Combo System achieve to offer a new experience that feels fresh, though not at best possible way.

Dynasty Warriors 9 does provide a bold step up with the open world, yet does somewhat fall short on the execution.

Dynasty Warriors 9 still has the 'levelling hundreds of dudes without breaking a sweat' core loop so you feel like a badass, but the open world removes some of the depth. Fans can still enjoy, but it won't win any new hearts this time.

Dynasty Warriors 9 is a fun and fresh take of the series with the familiar 1 vs 1000 action people expect but frame rate issues and no multiplayer component keep it from reaching it's full potential.

The game I played is an absolute technical disaster that barely runs. New elements haphazardly pop up with no consideration on how to fit them into the gameplay. Basics such as storytelling take a massive leap backward. Dynasty Warriors 9 isn't just bad. This is a Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 level series killer.

Dynasty Warriors 9 is so bad it could completely destroy your faith in the series.

Dynasty Warriors 9 is a bit too overly ambitious in some areas but manages to hold its own in this new re-imagining of the series. What it lacks in polish it makes up for in sheer content and fun combat. The hammy power metal coupled with some over the top anime-styled fights and a rich world to explore makes for an experience I’m surprised I enjoyed as much as I did.

Open world might not be the right step for Dynasty Warriors. Something like Dynasty Warriors Empires would be a much better fit, as even hardcore Dynasty Warriors fans are going to have trouble overlooking the problems present in this title.

Dynasty Warriors 9 tries to be an overhaul among all of the games that share the "one man against thousand" formula. But it is more of a major upgrade than an overhaul. Dynasty Warriors 9 is an exciting and definitive buy for those who are new to the series or are returning to it after a long absence. But for its loyal fans and those who had their fair share of the "one man against thousand" formula, Dynasty Warriors 9 is just another game in the series without any significant value

Featuring reworked combat and open-world story mechanics, Dynasty Warriors 9 is a definite step in the right direction. But even without the technical issues around its framerate, Dynasty Warriors 9 feels like a fundamentally compromised game that lacks depth. Fans of the franchise will likely be able to see past its shortcomings, but everyone else looking for a hack-and-slash fix would do better to look at one of Omega Force's other titles, like Berserk and the Band of the Hawk.

Dynasty Warriors 9 is a significant departure from past titles, but a poorly implemented open world leaves much to be desired.

Dynasty Warriors 9, with the new open world sandbox-style, is a nice new approach to a formula too exploited, but that can not stop it from being tedious within a few hours.

Even with my issues, I love this game. I wish it would be more polished than it is, and I wish the voices were what I remember, but I’m still having a lot of fun with it. The combat is engaging enough, the story is still quite good, and the open world lets you explore and just do whatever you want in. Will this actually entice new players into the series? I don’t think it’s got enough there to change the stigma surrounding Warriors games but for existing fans this one not to miss.

Unfortunately, the changes in Dynasty Warriors 9 are a bit too superficial and kept too much of what made the series suffer in previous titles.
