Despite an attractive veneer, Planet Alpha offers rote and shallow platforming. Try Playdead's Inside instead.

Staggeringly beautiful at times, with some wonderfully imaginative art design, but this sci-fi oddity is a lot more entertaining to watch than it is to play.

Planet Alpha's glorious vistas are worth seeing, even though its mechanics aren't particularly unique.

Whilst an enjoyable and undoubtedly beautiful game, Planet Alpha never quite makes the leap into classic territory. There is an admirable sense of vision here and the commitment to a non-verbal narrative is striking, but Planet Alpha remains a functional game under the gorgeous aesthetic. The fusions of cinematic platformer and endless runner often feel at odds with one another as the game pushes you forward when you most want to stand back and enjoy the view. Life here comes at you fast; blink and you'll be vaporised or crushed by a mile high leviathan.

Planet Alpha is a game with great ideas and a not-so-good execution. Its puzzles are too simple and its platforming zones are almost inexistent, giving as result a mediocre gameplay. However, the incredible artistic level and good storeytelling can keep the experience afloat

A beautiful experience. Planet Alpha looks like the game that, if Gaudi was alive today, he could have designed. Platforms, stealth and puzzles based on the day-night cycle.

Planet Alpha is a gorgeous thing to look at and it starts well, but its second half struggles with its level design and can become frustrating as a result.

If you're looking for a (mostly) peaceful gameplay experience that relaxes you and immerses you into an artificial world, Planet Alpha is definitely for you. The game's length is short, and people that want an action experience will get none of it with Planet Alpha. But aside from that, it's a game that you shouldn't pass up.

This game isn't bad, it's annoying. With moments of really solid gameplay peeking through maybe pick this one up on sale but otherwise there are better games doing similar things out there.

Don't be fooled by the pretty visuals: Planet Alpha's gameplay is terrible, the whole thing goes on far too long, and it's a hodgepodge of haphazard mechanics and encounters to the point where it's impossible to tell what the game was supposed to be.

Planeth Alpha is a sci-fi adventure really excellent in the artistic design, like a true moving fresco, but not as effective in everything related to gameplay, with obvious puzzles and imperfect stealth mechanics.

Planet Alpha is an enjoyable sci-fi indie, one that is undeniably stunning and engaging thanks to a unique day-night dynamic and interesting puzzles. Its major downfall is the glaring predictability of the story, but most players will be over the moon with what this game has to offer.

A wonderful aesthetics, a comfortable gameplay for everyone, an uncomplicated theme and ingenious puzzles that make use of the graphic engine itself and the stage to solve them.

Planet Alpha's arresting visuals aren't enough to distract from its disappointing, familiar gameplay and a meditative narrative that never takes off.

Planet Alpha will grab the player's attention with its visually stunning environment, variety of backdrops and marvelous fauna. While the game's lifespan is rather short and the difficulty level could be more challenging, Planet Alpha has an accessible gameplay that all audiences can enjoy and is undoubtedly one of the best puzzle games of the year.

As I mentioned above, I've not been this impressed with a game within these genres since The Witness, and prior to that, I think of Blow's other game, Braid. For me, those two games are the pinnacle of puzzle games, but Planet Alpha announces what it wants to do, and does it, so it's difficult for me to fault it. Slip away into the world of Planet Alpha for a while, filled with puzzles and color. It's a real charmer.

It's impossible to not be caught up in Planet Alpha's charms. The product of one man and a small indie team from Denmark, it's a game that runs remarkably smoothly considering the detail of its environments and the vibrancy of its art style. The platforming won't blow you away - especially if you've become trained in the twitch arts of Hollow Knight and the like - but with some brilliant puzzles, a rewarding balance between endangered stealth and peaceful exploration and some of the most intense set-pieces we've ever played on Switch, Freedom Planet has secured a place as one of 2018's most important indie releases.

The universe of this game is one that could have benefited from a sense of atmosphere that's rooted in the past.
