Crytek have made something that feels truly distinct with Hunt: Showdown. The tense, high stakes PvP action blends well with southern swamp-horror PvE to create a fresh and compelling multiplayer experience, though the extreme lethality of the combat and a current lack of content might leave you hunting for a sale.

I came away from Hunt: Showdown a little let down. The premise is good, the setting is something new, and many of the gameplay loop elements are unique. Better still, the combination of PvPvE sets the stage for something amazing, but that stage is just too damned small. With too deep a grind, and too few maps, Hunt: Showdown has just too little content (currently) to match its ambition. But hey...at least the hunting is cool!

Hunt: Showdown is a great shooter that needs stronger single-player support.

Hunt: Showdown is a unique mix of battle royale and hardcore survival games. The learning curve is incredibly steep and permadeath is fairly punishing. However, the core gameplay has that spark of horror tension and the art design excels in every aspect.

It could use some more content and a little polish, but Hunt: Showdown is an intense and unique game with incredible sound design, a fantastic premise, and compelling gameplay.

Hunt: Showdown is a solid game, with genuine thought put into making it play in a distinct way, but it feels too anonymous in every other key area to be essential within the genre.

Hunt: Showdown is a great blend of battle royale and survival horror; one that is an enjoyable, but also unbelievably tense, and merciless gaming experience. Apart from being quite rough around the edges, its unrelenting nature (courtesy of its surprisingly cruel permadeath mechanic), and almost awful matchmaking logic, make this a game for only a few - a few who must put hundreds of work on it, if they don't won't to spend most of their time staring at the words "You're Dead!"

Hunt: Showdown wants so desperately to be its own new thing that it didn't seem to consider that what it is... isn't particularly fun.

An online horror shooter packing some suitably devilish details, but slow pacing and cruel penalties don't give you much reason to return.Benjamin Griffin

While there are occasional highlights, Hunt: Showdown is an uneven online shooter which would have benefitted from improved technical performance and refinement of its moment-to-moment gameplay.

There are not very successfull monster hunters. Game looks promising, but there is ugly graphics and not enough content.

Hunt: Showdown has been a difficult game to review, then. When you’re in the swing of things, perhaps with a friend or two in tow, you can easily sink a number of hours into the game if you let its undeniably addictive nature sink its claws into you. However, it’s hard to recommend to anyone except the most die-hard fans of this particular niche, due to its exceptionally steep learning curve and consistently unforgiving nature.

“While Hunt: Showdown gives players a high calibre atmosphere to play in, the steep learning curve and difficulty for new players to survive encounters with veterans may give it problems in gathering a large player base.”

If you are tired of multiplayer battle royale and are looking for something more similar to Monster Hunter where you form a team, but without worrying about the threat of other online players, Hunt: Showdown is an excellent candidate to get together with your friends and spend some terrifying and great times.
