If you like tapping to the beat while colorful Vocaloid characters dance around, this game has a lot of that. However, if you're looking for a story mode, a campaign, or anything beyond an excuse to tap to the beat, this isn't the game for you. It does one thing and one thing quite well, and for me, it'll do.

If you’re a Hatsune Miku fan that’s been deprived of the Project DIVA series over the years due to not having a console, you might want to consider Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Mega Mix+ a must-have if your PC is up to the job. While the gameplay is starting to feel a little old now, the fact that there are over 170 songs to enjoy here is incredible. The VIP edition with its 250 songs is the way to go, though. This is the ultimate Hatsune Miku experience. And there’s even the possibility of more songs being added in the future.

Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Mega Mix+ is a great game PC-owning rhythm game fans. The music remains catchy across all of the genres it tackles, and while the playfield can be busy, the mechanics place you in a trance once you get into a groove. The basic arcade mode is enough for most fans, while more creative types will enjoy the ability to create t-shirts and dress up the vocaloids in costumes. The absence of two songs isn't too bad, but the frame rate stutter is going to be painful if you plan to perfect all of the songs at higher difficulty levels. Fix that, and this would be perfect, but as it stands now, unless you hate vocaloid music, Project DIVA Mega Mix+ is worth a purchase.

Hatsune Miku may have been around for a good chunk of time yet Project DIVA Mega Mix doesn't really push any boundaries. It's still a very fun rhythm game so whether you're a fan of the genre or the Vocaloid herself, it's definitely worth checking out.

Mega Mix will likely be a fun entry for those newer to the series, but for veterans, it really doesn’t have much to offer. Stick to Future Tone instead.

Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Mega Mix is crammed with unlimited fun and awesome music, optimised for both playing at home and on the go. Despite the fewer number of songs in comparison to the PS4 counterpart, the Switch edition boasts unique features, modes and content, although there is a lot of day-one DLC which I feel should have been included. If you like Hatsune Miku, you’ll love this edition – it’s more of the same but playable on the go and at home – you can even opt to have PS button prompts so you can imagine you’re playing the Vita 2.0. Rhythm game fans and those looking for a private social-distancing concert in their own home should certainly check this out.

Personally, I think rhythm games are best suited to portable systems, with their pick-up-and-play nature going hand in hand with bite-sized gameplay. Mega Mix is a game I can see myself coming back to time and time again, and it’s bursting with enough content that I’m sure to have some fun with Miku for years to come.

Overall I really loved my time playing Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Mega Mix. The music videos put a smile on my face and some of the songs I really loved and have stuck in my head hours after playing. With its huge list of songs and additional DLC you can add even more to the experience and there was already a lot to love about this game. The only thing some fans may not like is there is no The DIVA room mode like in the PS3/Vita game Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA F 2nd. Other than that I really love this game!

Whether or not you play Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Mega Mix on a Nintendo Switch or a Switch Lite, there’s a lot to offer in such a small package regardless if you buy the DLC bundle or not. There’s a little bit of everything for everyone from pop to rock and even electronic music, each song varies in challenge and it’s just the perfect balance to say that this package is the best offering of Hatsune Miku and is an absolute must-own for Nintendo Switch fans.

I’m still not sure that you can ever really call a rhythm game “perfect,” but Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Mega Mix is as closest to perfection as I’ve ever seen a rhythm game get. As much as I’m aware that Vocaloid music isn’t for everyone, I honestly can’t help but recommend that anyone into rhythm games do themselves a favor and at least give this game a chance. You’ll only be hurting yourself in the long run if you don’t!

Despite nitpicks with tracklist choice, Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Mega Mix is a great way to kick off the franchise on the Switch. The game runs smooth in handheld mode, which has always been my preferred way to play, and looks fantastic. There are plenty of Modules to unlock and lots of tracks to master on the various difficulties. If you’re a fan of the franchise and have been looking for a solid handheld offering, jump on this right away. If this is your first foray into the Project Diva franchise I can think of no better place to start than here. Just don’t blame me when you when you seek out Vocaloid music for the next 100 years!
