You’ll genuinely want to explore every nook and cranny of the various environments too, because Half Past Fate looks stunning. It’s a perfect blend of 2D sprites and 3D environments, and everything from the character models to the tiny cups of coffee burst with personality - it’s one of the most beautiful pixel art games we’ve seen in a good while.

Half Past Fate's laid-back storyline and cute artwork leave you feeling relaxed and fulfilled. If you're looking for a challenge though, you aren't going to find it here. If you're new to the genre, it's a nice way to get a feel for the style without getting overwhelmed by dozens of buttons, options and paths to follow.

Half Past Fate is certain to appeal to fans of romantic comedies who enjoy funny stories. While the game is rather short and sometimes it doesn't provide enough leads, the game's original concept and visual presentation help it create its own space. It's less clear if it will be enough to convince the wider audience who might not be easily swayed by its assets and simple gameplay.

Ultimately, Half Past Fate is a game about walking and talking for a few hours. Optional Achievement hunting can extend the game's length if you so choose, but this is without a doubt an interactive movie with some gameplay tossed in to glue plot segments together. Your general predilections as a person will ultimately dictate if that's worth the price point. Nonetheless, with its gorgeous art, energetic soundtrack, and breezy narrative, Half Past Fate just exudes positivity from top to bottom. That should count for something.

The gameplay is a little lacking in variety, but the characters and their world are vibrant and full of life. As you follow their ups and downs across these 12 vignettes, it's impossible not to root for each character to succeed in their quest for love. The in-game achievements give an incentive to explore more thoroughly, and the accessible nature of the game means anyone can enjoy it. If you're looking for the adventure game equivalent of meet-cute, schedule a date with Half Past Fate.

Titles with a focus on story-telling first have become quite popular in recent years and the Switch has amassed quite a library of differently-styled adventures to explore in that vein...

Overall, Half Past Fate allows players to re-live the bubbling giddiness that comes with new romance. It also easily showcases the joy that comes with the human connection.

Half Past Fate can be an incredibly sweet game, and the way even its minor characters reappear so that you can track how their lives change (or don’t) can be incredibly fulfilling. Rarely, though, the good intentions of characters can cause some of this sweetness to feel a touch contrived and unbelievable. Still, the story comes together in a really nice way, and the game’s simple mechanics rarely get in the way.

It’s a simple slice-of-life story with straightforward puzzles, but if that’s your thing, Half Past Fate does a clever job of connecting its cast of characters in ways that feel natural.

Overall, Half Past Fate is a bit of a mixed bag that hits more than it misses. Whilst the individual stories here are of varying levels of quality, the overall plot and writing was still enjoyable enough to carry me through to the end.

Do you know how it is to read a really, really good book and you're sad when it ends? When you flip the last page and would like to have the same experience all over again? This is how Half Past Fate works. It's a videogame that feels like a really good novel. For me, it's a nearly perfect experience that I won't ever forget.

Don’t go into the game thinking you’ll do some mindless gaming. Because of the mixed up timelines, familiar faces and tie-ins between the three couples Half Past Fate needs your attention. Like I did, you’ll no doubt have a favorite couple. Whether it’s Rinden and Mara, Bia and Milo or Ana and Jaren, all the stories are interesting. If you like story based games, solving puzzles and are in the mood little romance to go with it, you really can’t go wrong with Half Past Fate.
