The series greatest hits in one handsome package. It doesn't reinvent anything, but it's a great choice for spending time with friends.

This might be the best of Mario Party, completely open online, yet Superstars also highlight the formula's inherent flaws due to a lack of boards, some lingering random elements despite the additional parameters, and the absence of creativity, if not ambition overall.

Mario Party Superstars may bring back fond memories of Nintendo's mini-game franchise, but being from the past doesn't automatically make it a blast.

‎A new Mario Party is always good news for anyone who likes a few games at home in the company of friends. So, as usual, fun is guaranteed. But this installment gives off a degree of sloppiness that takes it too far away from the latest iteration of the franchise. Its value is subject to the desire you have to rediscover the mini-games it brings back. As a whole, the previous installment is far above.‎

Mario Party Superstars delivers on the nostalgia, but at the cost of feeling fresh.

Mario Party is one of those series that has stood the test of time, ever since its introduction on the N64 back in 1998/1999 (depending on where in the world you were). With several different games on each respective system, it has entertained gamers for over 20 years now. So with the Switch being in its fifth year on the market, it is time for another new entry of the iconic series. How does Mario Party Superstars compare to the previous game, Super Mario Party, on the Switch? And is this the return to form that fans of the series have been clamoring for? Let’s roll the dice and find out the result.

For better or worse, Mario Party Superstars delivers on its promise of bringing the best elements of the classic era of Mario Party to vivid life on the Switch, though even with a variety of gameplay styles and customization options, the formula is showing its age, and the loose combination of RNG and skill-based gameplay won’t be for everyone.

100 minigames and the five tables would have made a perfect addition to Super Mario Party as a DLC. Unfortunately, when you consider Mario Party Superstars on its own, it strikes me as too thin in content. Despite the excellent compilation of minigames, the rest doesn’t reach the Superstar status. In short, while I appreciate its nostalgic aspect, I would choose Super Mario Party before Mario Party Superstars.

Still, every charm of Mario Party is here, in full force. It's silly, frivolous fun, a perfect way to waste away an evening with friends, local or online. That does sting a little, when one considers the $60 cost, and how much more it could have offered.

...Superstars hasn’t added anything new to the series. The minigame modes aren’t very exciting, and the visuals, while nice, aren’t different from any other Mario game from the past few years. It’s definitely a great way to experience those classic N64 boards, as long as you don’t expect anything more.

Mario Party Superstars is an enjoyable ‘Best Hits’ collection of the series, including 100 classic mini games and 5 boards that all feel distinctive. But with the lack of modern features such as co-op play and motion controls, it’s clear this entry is prioritising nostalgia over innovation.

The game looks modern, but feels more like a classic entry in the franchise. If the thing you were missing was frustration and elation in equal measure, then yours will be a rich bounty indeed. For better and for worse, this is a heaping helping of the cruel whimsy you remember so well. Mario Party Superstars is a glamorous trip down cherished paths you’ve mostly blocked from your memory.

Mario Party Superstars is an excellent package for long-suffering Mario Party fans, but it's almost certainly not going to lead to any new converts. Online multiplayer is a nice feature to have at launch, and the variety of 100 minigames will keep things feeling fresh for your first dozen hours of play at least. But with that said, this is quite literally the safest Mario Party entry imaginable, and even with a hot nostalgia injection, I think I prefer Super Mario Party as the Switch's premier place to ruin your relationships.

The lack of worthwhile unlockable content is one of the biggest downsides in Mario Party Superstars, but those who are only interested in using it as a party game likely won't be all that disappointed. Mario Party Superstars has fun online multiplayer functionality and makes a number of important quality of life improvements when compared to its predecessor, and so it's still a big step in the right direction for the franchise, despite some of its shortcomings.

There are plenty of mini-games here, and they're all fast, and most importantly, fun. There's nothing new here outside of a working online multiplayer, but for fans of the series, that's probably all that's needed anyway.

Mario is a real superstar in this funny party game. But it could use a bit more gaming boards and a lot more characters.
