Tails of Iron is a perfect adventure for ARPG lovers. It presents a gentler challenge than other similar titles, but equally enjoyable, and its 2D drawn world grabs you from the very first moment.

Tails of Iron is not for the fainthearted. It’s a bloody, brutal, blistering experience from start to finish. Its combat smartly mixes skill and strategy. The game will push you to your limits, but it’s hard not to have fun skewering and slaughtering your way to redemption. While the game’s scope is, unfortunately, a bit limited, I have a feeling this won’t be the last time we hear from Redgi.

Check out my review of Tails of Iron and follow our journey of Redgi the rat. Heir to throne Redgi must help rebuild his kingdom after the pond scum (frogs) trash the place. This game definitely has a darker side to it. Don’t worry though, Redgi will save the day or die trying.

Tails of Iron is more of an adventure game with RPG elements. This is a really charming game, and quite cute, but not in the traditional sense. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and meeting new characters, even the unique bosses of which there were many. The combat is challenging and punishing, but rewarding when you do take down a boss that you have been stuck on for half an hour. The art style is fantastic and suits the game exceptionally. And of course, the legendary Doug Cockle narrating is just the icing on the cake. Add into that, this game is great value for money and isn’t one you can complete in an evening. The best part is that it is out now! What are you waiting for?

Such is the story of Tails of Iron. It doesn’t accomplish anything notably remarkable, but it doesn’t have to. It’s a well-designed, fun, and engaging title that I was surprisingly addicted to.

I had a really good time playing through Tails of Iron’s adventure, with the gorgeous visuals and robust combat mechanics the stand-out features. It was easy to root for Redgi to succeed, whilst venturing further across the world and vanquishing the enemies that roam it was a real treat. It was guilty of being a little bit repetitive with some of its side quests and the world isn’t as expansive as similar titles in the genre, but Tails of Iron never outstays its welcome and doesn’t stop being fun to play. Add to that the fact that it runs really smoothly on the Nintendo Switch and it becomes clear that it’s an adventure that fans of the genre are sure to enjoy.

Tails of Iron is a 2D action adventure with RPG elements, and various soulslike formulas particularly framed in demanding combat. Despite the many RPG elements, the core of the adventure is combat, so the progress ends up being quite linear and the lack of variety of situations is accused. Of course, the combat is well implemented - with many familiar elements from the Souls franchise - and it is quite fair as well as demanding. Audiovisually is at another level for the quality and the care put by the developers. One of the indie surprises of the year.

Tails of Iron is an RPG throwback to the classic, old school combat and strategy style seldom used that often anymore. Combined with the 2D hand-drawn environments and strategy that it employs, Tails of Iron is a welcome addition that fans of the RPG genre and newcomers alike will enjoy

Tails of Iron borrows inspiration from other challenging games, but its beautifully crafted world and thought-provoking narrative definitely deserve your attention. Every new area offers more to explore and tests your skills to see this rodent’s adventure through until the end. Tails of Iron is an under-rat-ed gem that will make a mighty fine addition to your indie game collection this year despite some rare bugs and needed updates to the combat systems.

At first, Tails of Iron beats you down so hard that you may feel it is totally unfair but when you get a handle on things and find some useful armor and tools, then you start to enjoy this fun epic heroic mouse-venture with some of the best visuals you’ll see in the word of video games.

An exhilarating 2D soulslike set in a remarkably charming world, Tails of Iron is a surprise GOTY candidate. You’ll croak and die often due to the formidable combat but the narrative and systems will keep you coming back for more, like a rat does to cheese.

Tails of Iron is a solid, confident entry to the genre. The tightly focused encounter design, meaty combat and enjoyable world-building and storytelling with adorable rodents who think they’re people, I didn’t find much not to like. The difficulty may be a turn-off for some, but the game keeps to the core soulslike tenet of playing fair and making sure that when you die (and you will die), you’ll know what you did wrong to bring it about. If you’re looking for a challenging, rich adventure then I’d highly recommend joining Redgi to reclaim his kingdom and his crown.

Any game that tosses in a lovely homage to 90s wrestling via its medieval arena combat portions is at least worth your good attention.

Overall, Tails of Iron is a fantastic experience. The world building, combat, audio, and nearly every other aspect of the game is executed masterfully. Only slightly hampered by its brevity and excessive backtracking, Tails of Iron should be played by all fans of Soulslike and other 2D games.

Tails of Iron may be an indie title, but this Souls-like RPG sure hits like an AAA experience in every sense.
