A picturesque museum exhibit that's beautiful to look at, but painful to play.

Trek to Yomi is like a Christmas present you've been waiting for, and it's finally here, wrapped in the most unique and gorgeous way possible, but when you open it there is nothing inside.

Trek to Yomi makes a great first impression. The black and white, combined with the first uses of the combat system, suggests an experience that will allow players to step into the sandals of a samurai. The story might not be extraordinary but there’s enough sentiment in it to keep players engaged.

Trek to Yomi is a trip to historic Japan in the style of Kurosawa movies. The unique monochrome look will immerse you in the game, and the fights are dynamic and realistic. You will reach the endinf really soon, but the game will leave a good impression. In Game Pass, this is a clear choice that you should not miss.

Trek to Yomi honors all its best references and the result is an aesthetically brilliant game, with a solid combat system (even if it may seem repetitive in some parts), a safe exploration model and a narrative cadence faithful to the great works of the genre. As a whole, a worthy and memorable experience.

Trek to Yomi is a visual masterpiece with a solid story, unfortunately let down by its gameplay. Whilst there are some enjoyable elements, it doesn't hold up when compared to numerous recently released peers that do samurai combat better.

Although the game is still a good experience, every enjoyable aspect was brought with a caveat that diminished my enjoyment somewhat. It's a great idea, but its execution was not so much.

One recurring thought I had throughout my time with Trek to Yomi was how much a game’s art style truly influences the experience, and that is where Trek to Yomi thrives. When looking at the game as a playable homage to classic samurai films and less of a gameplay experience but more of a visual experience, fans will find that Trek to Yomi is a great time.

Trek to Yomi is an undoubtedly beautiful game that will constantly make you want to take screenshots. It's just too bad that its gameplay is as simplistic and repetitive as it is because it ends up feeling like a chore to play after a while.

Trek to Yomi is a game you should try at some point, no matter what kind of game you prefer. It may not impress with its combat system and linear gameplay structure, but both its flawless cinematics and unparalleled atmosphere are enough to make it memorable.

Overall I did enjoy my time with Trek to Yomi. It’s a great tribute piece to classic samurai cinema and has excellent art direction and sound design. It’s combat system did begin to wear a little thin by the game’s end and there were a few bugs encountered during my time with it, but if you’re looking for an interesting samurai tale that can be completed in just a couple of sessions, Trek to Yomi may be just the thing you’re looking for.

As through the motions as combat can feel on easier difficulties, it feels a whole lot more deep if you decide to play on a harder tougher difficulty, and whether you like things simple or you prefer to be challenged, Trek to Yomi remains pretty satisfying. Devolver Digital has another winner.

Trek to Yomi is a solid product set in feudal Japan, faithfully portraying the Bushido lifestyle and some more general themes such as grief, the consequences of a wrong decision and the complex choice between love, duty and revenge. The title by Leonard Menchiari and Flying Wild Hog may not be such a rich experience in terms of gameplay, but embarking on this cinematic and historical journey filled with content about Japanese mythology pays off — and a lot — the few hours invested.

It’s a shame that, for whatever reason, screenshots have been disabled on the Nintendo Switch, because I would love to show firsthand that there is little difference between the Xbox and handheld versions. Still, it overall didn’t affect my play, and the end result is still the same: a battlefield soaked in blood, a boy fulfills his debt, and the player is left torn between relief and unease. Was this truly the only path to redemption? Or was the loss worth the price of revenge?

Trek to Yomi is one heck of a game that sets out to pay homage to the great samurai films of the 1950s and it certainly achieves this and then some. With a bold art direction that perfectly resonates with mid-twentieth-century film-making, it is one of the most well put together games in the indie scene. Its breathtaking scenery and equally impressive soundtrack create an atmosphere that encapsulates the Edo era, with the only downsides being the most nit-picky of details.

Trek To Yomi is the most perfect 2.5D homage you'll find to Japanese mythology and culture, but above all with a special focus on the cinematic achievements of Akira Kurosawa, delivering wonderfully well, and stealing full credit for the simple and rather repetitive gameplay that stays with us for about five hours of gameplay.

It's clear that Flying Wild Hog Studio didn't have a big goal in releasing Trek to Yomi. TTY could have become one of the best of 2022 with more variety in gameplay and avoiding repetitions; But the result turned out to be something contrary to the expectations of the fans.

Trek to Yomi is a dramatic journey of revenge and redemption, with a poor narrative aspect and a repetitive and unbalanced combat system. The developer put all their effort in the beautiful aesthetics and sound aspect of the game, resulting in an immersive, yet not totally satisfying, experience.

The inspiration is clear. The idea is there, but the lack of polish on it's challenging gameplay makes its journey of five hours a bit of a drag.
