Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's campaign is a disappointment and while there's fun to be had in multiplayer, it's missing important features.

Despite corrections making for an improved all-around package, Modern Warfare II continues the series' ongoing trend of paling in comparison to its original namesake.

As a fan of FPS games and a casual fan of the CoD franchise, it pains me to say Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is one of my most disliked entries in the series. The campaign is a huge step down from its original namesake, and the multiplayer has disappointed me on many levels. I know Activision loves to get a slice of the CoD pie every single year, but I still think we’d be better off with fewer titles, bigger innovations.

Modern Warfare 2 can be exciting when it works. Whilst the campaign’s narrative flaws can’t be fixed, major patchwork is needed to get the multiplayer (the most important aspect) to a good place, and co-op is in desperate need of extra content. Big games just shouldn’t be in this state at launch.

Although there are areas where 2022's Modern Warfare 2 excels in, the bug-filled and overly complicated parts of Infinity Ward's latest release overshadow what could be an excellent Call of Duty title.

Modern Warfare 2 is one of the most baffling Call of Duty games in years. It caters to newcomers, punishes veterans, and alienates everyone with overcomplicated menus. The campaign and Ground War are worthwhile. But Modern Warfare 2 still needs a lot of work to live up to its predecessors, and may not be worth your money just yet.

It still feels unfinished and rushed, but that’s not to say Modern Warfare II (2022) is not fun; it most certainly is. The graphic glitches, sound glitches, and the sometimes questionable gun and movement balancing make this really hard to recommend.

The campaign part of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is a mixed bag. On one hand it's easy to see how the team behind the game tried to break new ground with gameplay scenarios, but on the other hand a lot of those ideas feels undercooked.

While there are some new game modes and maps for players to master in multiplayer, there isn’t anything truly groundbreaking there, either. However, there are still a few new multiplayer features on the horizon, such as Tier 1 Hardcore playlists, that may amp up the multiplayer experience in the future.

I don't think Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 is a bad game, it's just incredibly boring for a Call of Duty campaign. It's just not as memorable and won't stick with me for years as some other Call of Duty campaigns did. Perhaps I should learn to keep my expectations in check from now on but even if I went in expecting nothing, I'd say Call of Duty is just an okay game that could be worth your time if you're a die-hard fan.

Despite high production values, Modern Warfare II is a tad underwhelming. A pretty yet predictable campaign, decent multiplayer that is unsure about how it's supposed to play, and the sweet taste of Spec Ops mean this is an uneven, but enjoyable enough package. What's clear is Call of Duty really, really needs a proper break to reset.

The return of Task Force 141 brings along with it an unusually topical storyline that lacks the signature Blockbuster appeal of your typical Call of Duty campaign and instead feels like a Direct-to-DVD sequel.

Whether any of this is enough to put off an audience inured to Call of Duty’s detached depiction of brutal warfare is anyone’s guess. Plenty of people can put up with a bit of ugliness if there’s still a pretty good time to be had overall. For Modern Warfare II, the good time offered by its multiplayer and in glimpses within its campaign may be enough.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 returns in a remake that fails to fully satisfy. The gameplay is certainly among the best on the market in the shooting aspect, but it has serious problems that lead to this chapter being considered the worst of the entire saga.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II pretends to be a classic action showcase, which it still is, but at the same time, it tries to come up with new mechanics. These feel fresh, and it's excellent that Infinity Ward is trying to change up a stale franchise. The problem, however, is that it does it in a big way, so to speak, and every change it introduces is thrown at you several more times in the minutes that follow, even when the mission no longer can do so.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II once again focuses on multiplayer and nails the landing in that regard. The singleplayer and co-op modes are a bit more mixed, though.

Modern Warfare 2’s campaign looks, feels, and sounds fantastic with the IW 9.0 engine flexing its capabilities with much success. Characters feel a bit more fleshed out with added personalities that help the player connect and believe in their relationships with each other. However, the narrative is bogged down by tedious mission design, technical bugs, and an overreliance on sequel-baiting that doesn’t feel earned at all.
