Alone in the Dark is hopelessly mediocre and rife with technical issues. While the bugs can be addressed, the generic gameplay and confusing story will always hold it back. There should have been some effort to include the original 1992 Alone in the Dark as an unlockable extra to add value to this remake, like how Splatterhouse (2010) had the 16-bit trilogy or how the Medievil remake had the PS1 game as an unlockable.

A promising game that feels undercooked. Enjoyable, unique and intriguing at times but for every great aspect there are one or two that feel unfinished or tacked on.

AITD is a game that does a lot of things well, but it is also burdened by its weaknesses. Enjoyable puzzles, a good script, and an immersive atmosphere are all lost in the surprisingly poor combat mechanics, bugs and technical issues that spoil the enjoyment of the game...

It would be a wise decision to visit Raccoon City Police Department or ISS Ishimura once again rather than discover mysteries of Derceto Manor.

It’s really nice to have Alone in the Dark back in form. And for it to have its own identity. After being such a pioneer, this series has spent so long chasing the horror genre popular trends and trying to read the lowest common denominator that it became little more than a pale imitation of other good ideas. It’s genuinely nice to have something that heads in its own direction, and is comfortable in providing a taut atmosphere and a focus on a chilling narrative rather than visceral scares. You could call it “quaint,” but I like to think of it more like a game Stephen King would like to see rather than another cash-in from the Saw writers.

Alone in the Dark is far from a perfect game, but its engaging puzzles, impressive exploration and intriguing story would give you plenty reason to experience it.

Alone in the Dark is a perfectly fun survival-horror game that doesn't manage to stick the landing. Fun puzzle-solving struggles with awkward combat, and a lack of tension keeps the horror feeling limited. It's an interesting reboot of the franchise, and I could easily see it becoming something better in sequels, but the first outing feels unexceptional.

A return to form for the franchise, Alone in the Dark masterfully tells an intriguing narrative mixed with solid acting and an engaging gameplay loop.

Alone in the Dark is back, and frankly, it may have been better left alone. THQ Nordic's revival isn't a bad game - we enjoyed chunks of it especially towards the beginning of the adventure - but it doesn't stand out in any meaningful way, and ultimately feels a little pointless in the end. We'd recommend keeping an eye on that launch patch to see how the game is shaping up on release, but it's best not to expect a Resident Evil-level reimagining from this Alone in the Dark reboot - even if it stands as a serviceable third-person adventure.

Alone in the Dark is a collective of issues and fails to impress or add anything to the genre. It is hard to revive the beloved series, but the previous attempts and the final package here all signal that Alone in the Dark should remain a nostalgia.

Although sometimes a little rough, Alone in the Dark is a fantastic remake/reimagining that brings the series back in line with its most interesting events and timeline. This is essential for players looking for a semi-old-school survival horror title that has excellent world design, acting and a host of interesting mysteries to solve. A really great return to form!

As buggy as the bayou, Alone in the Dark is a disappointing return for the classic horror franchise. Derceto Manor has corners worth exploring, and the puzzles are smartly designed. However, the clunky combat, lack of scares, unengaging story and drab voice acting sully the overall package.

The new Alone in the Dark game is slow and the action is secondary. There are a lot of puzzles and you have to read journals, notes and clues to solve them. You'll enjoy the atmosphere, the intelligently written story, the two well-crafted perspectives, the great music, and just the puzzles. Want to shoot zombies in the head and not strain yours? Find something else.

Alone in the Dark may not be the most inventive game in the genre, but it's extremely competent in everything it proposes. Combat, exploration, and storytelling are excellent, with a beautiful noir setting, slipping in a few visual and rhythmic details. The original survivor horror is back, and in a big way!

Alone in the Dark is a hauntingly atmospheric experience with clever puzzles and a decent narrative. However, frustrating combat mechanics and occasional technical hiccups prevent it from being a truly great game. The short campaign length might leave some players wanting more, but the Director’s Commentary Mode offers a valuable bonus for horror enthusiasts. The Vintage Horror Filter adds a nice touch of customization, but it’s not essential for everyone. Ultimately, Alone in the Dark is a decent return to form for the franchise. It’s worth checking out for fans of the genre and those seeking a good dose of Southern Gothic horror, just be prepared for a few stumbles along the way.

2024's Alone in the Dark is not on par with the Resident Evil remakes which set the bar really high to be honest and not the triumphant return we've been waiting for the legendary series. Nevertheless, it's a notable addition to it, one that if anything makes its name sound more than just a distant echo again. With a satisfying 9-hour campaign and good replayability with 2 characters with different perspectives on the story (plus some other differences I won't spoil), it's a good offering in the genre.

Alone in the Dark is definitely not a perfect title, but it is, without a shadow of a doubt, a brilliant job of (re)contextualizing the classic survival horror (while keeping true to the spirit of the original), featuring a stunning 1920s setting. Alternating between an intriguing detective story and total horror, we were literally enraptured by Pieces Interactive and THQ Nordic's game. Although exploration is the mainstay of the Swedish production, with lots of elements to analyze and understand in order to solve the various puzzles scattered along the way, as well as collectible objects, since it is also a survival horror game, combat is nevertheless well present. Too bad for the somewhat lacking shooting system that does not give that right feel, for an AI that is not quite up to speed and some slight technical uncertainties. All in all, Alone in The Dark is a splendid and flawed horror/esoteric, psychological and detective adventure that pays homage to Frédérick Raynal's vision to the best of its ability-thanks in part to a first-rate cast.

Despite a long hiatus, the Alone in the Dark remake is a solid offering in a long-dormant franchise. It does borrow heavily from modern survival horror titles but still manages to create its own distinctive experience. It’s clear that a lot of attention went into rendering both David Harbour and Jodie Comer into their characters. Fortunately, that gambit paid off well in a concise package with decent gameplay and story beats to match.

Alone in the Dark returns to the scene after several years (and postponements) with an enjoyable product, but far from the other ‘restyling’ operations to which the last few years have accustomed us. Despite a fine setting and an excellent puzzle sector, Pieces Interactive's new endeavour runs aground on an unmemorable gunplay and on a fluctuating graphical rendering. A good starting point, however, which we hope will pick up further in the near future.

Alone in the Dark seeks to introduce new audiences to the game, series, and story that started one of the most popular genres so many years ago and enjoys overwhelming support today. Unfortunately, compared to its direct competition, this new reimagining of the original doesn't stand out as much as it could. However, it's still an entertaining and well-executed title that I hope is merely the start of something more.
