MLB The Show 24 is a shining example of a developer who loves sports and wants to build the game and should be an example of other sports franchises.

MLB The Show 24 loads its bases with plenty of options for beginners and veterans while exploring a legacy that should be played by all. It's the best licensed sports title on the market, and there's no close second.

After opening month with Sony San Diego's MLB The Show 24, things seem to be on track for another winning season online, but The Road to the Show is still a bit rocky.

MLB The Show 24 delivers a solid third season of baseball on Switch in a port that keeps the gameplay fluid and delivers a full suite of modes, even if it does feel as though the console is really being pushed to its limit now. There are the expected visual downgrades, longer loading times compared to other platforms, and online can be dodgy, but a slew of modes, deep and satisfying gameplay, and that handsomely expanded Storylines mode patches over most of the rough spots.

MLB The Show 24 is another very good baseball game from San Diego Studio. It suffers from a lot of the same pitfalls as other annual sports titles, but The Show is so clearly head-and-shoulders above those games. The Negro Leagues Season 2, inclusive additions to RTTS, and the introduction of Impact Plays show that this series hasn’t quite lost its fastball.

MLB The Show 24 doesn’t reinvent the wheel. Though, it never needed to. The Show has been an outstanding franchise for a long time. If anything, this year simply continues that tradition of excellence. The storylines are entertaining and insightful. Changes to the Diamond Dynasty mode ensure players won’t burn out in the early months of release. Most importantly, gameplay is once again a brilliant simulation of the actual sport. Kudos to San Diego Studio; it’s another homerun.

MLB The Show 24 may not offer up many changes when it comes to outfield action, but the modes continue to be improved. I loved seeing Road to the Show finally get some dev time, and Storylines continues to be one of the strongest modes introduced by the series. If you're looking to escape from the potential disappointment of your real-life ball team, you'll find plenty of ways to do so here.

This is the best baseball game on the market and its content shows us that you will be trapped with everything it has, once again we have to play for a long time until its next installment.

For me, the biggest impact of MLB The Show 24 was the way it honors the game's history while also offering several high-end gateways into the game-playing experience. As a sports title, it's whatever you want it to be. If you want the hardcore stuff with every pitch and swing, you got it. If you want to just destroy the CPU for a quick 10 minutes, you can do that, too. If you want to just know more about baseball's legendary figures, this is also a pretty good place to start.

MLB The Show 24 welcomes the new Major League season with many modes but few noteworthy new features, still proving to be the best baseball game on the market. We appreciated San Diego Studio's work in telling the most significant stories of the Negro Leagues, but on the other hand we were disappointed by the developers' inability to take full advantage of next-gen consoles to improve the technical aspect of the game.

MLB The Show 24 doesn’t hit it out of the park at every at-bat, but it doesn’t have to. The series is in the middle of an experimental phase that’s trying to mitigate its perpetual “online vs. offline” war. Despite a clear lack of innovation in mechanics, it has still found a way to impress, inspire, and engage with a younger generation that shares an interest in history. The Show’s art team is second to none, its OST shuffles Eladio Carrion, IDLES, Flowdan, and Brittany Howard with the grace of a 2 Chainz verse, and its “Grind 99” mantra has been edited to be a modern ideology – “play however and whenever.” It’s why Diamond Dynasty is the best take on Ultimate Team in terms of approachability and competition and why The Show 24 hopes to reignite annual titles through personalization. As the great Toni Stone once implied: “Get you one ‘cause I got mine.”

MLB The Show 24 delights with another season of Storylines: The Negro Leagues and continued on-field excellence, but some modes are still in desperate need of an overhaul.

MLB The Show 24 is worth buying if you haven't played MLB The Show 23. If you're an Xbox Game Pass subscriber, you can check it out as well. The gameplay in MLB The Show 24 is solid, and it has been fine-tuned and improved slightly from the previous version. Although MLB The Show 24 is competent enough, it likely won't satisfy those who aren't die-hard fans of the series enough to warrant an upgrade from the previous installment.

MLB The Show 24 is a great baseball simulator and one of the most competent sports games on the market. This year's Storylines are excellent and the new features in Road to the Show add a lot to the solo experience, although there is a lack of new features in the other modes.

Speaking in purely numerical terms, MLB The Show 24 could almost be called 23 1/2. The novelties present are more quantitative than qualitative, with a game structure that follows the path of the past edition without the slightest deviation. What has changed is mainly the content, among which the excellent second season dedicated to the Negro League and the section starring Derek Jeter stand out. Not much to report about Road To The Show, Franchise and Diamond Dynasty, which remain on discrete/good levels without the addition of particular extras that impact considerably on the gaming experience. No particular flaws in the technical sector, which would however need some cleaning and global modernization, with particular attention to the players' models.

The bottom line is more or less the same as it is every year: if you skipped a year or two it’s a good place to jump back in; if you played last year’s edition your mileage will vary depending on how important it is to you that you get a new season of storylines, plus the ability to create a female player. Nothing in MLB The Show 24 achieves the same comparative highs of the franchise during its glory years from a decade ago, but it’s undeniably a very outing.

MLB The Show 24 offers a slightly more complete experience than recent releases, with the addition of an all-female chapter for its career mode. And the Storylines mode offers even more content than before, mixing the real and virtual worlds. This is clearly the direction in which the SIE San Diego team needs to move in order to maximise the variety of the experience. For its part, the modification of defensive phases is interesting, but remains rather timid. Not to mention that the classic modes offer very little that's new. My main recommendation is for those who may have missed out on last year's edition.

All in all, MLB The Show 24 continues to swing for the fences as the best representation of the sport in video game form, and save for a few misses, it always delivers. The outstanding gameplay is enhanced with an elevated presentation in all of the modes, and the storytelling in Storylines is a big draw for those wanting to embrace the game's roots and pay homage to the legends from yesteryear. While Diamond Dynasty can be an acquired taste, and the inclusion of Derek Jeter may not appeal to all, these missteps hardly take the shine of the gem that is MLB The Show 24, and it's time to play ball.
