Fourteen years after the original release-and one year after its first reissue-Sonic x Shadow Generations remains an excellent video game that deserves to be discovered or rediscovered. The Nintendo Switch 2 version delivers a genuine technical upgrade, albeit with a few compromises. However, the lack of a free or discounted upgrade for owners of the 2024 version is hard to justify, especially given the complete absence of new content. If this is your first time playing it, consider yourself lucky: you're about to experience one of the best Sonic games ever made.

If you are a Sonic fan, this is a great collection of some classic levels with enhancements to bring them into the modern gaming age. With the addition of the Shadow campaign there's plenty of gameplay to be had. If you are new to the Sonic series, this is a great way to get a taste of different iterations and to learn a bit about the backstory of some of the characters. A great bit of fun and a stunning update on some familiar levels.

To review Sonic x Shadow Generations, you have to look at it in two parts. Sonic Generations feels a little dated, with an outdated design and rough visuals that drag down the collection as a whole. However, Shadow Generations makes up for this with modern tweaks that cater to today's gamers, leaving the collection in a passable and moderately satisfying state.

Sonic X Shadow Generations once again proves that while Sonic may be timeless, Shadow just squeaks ahead in understanding the assignment a little better – offering a revisited revamp that is easy to enjoy for fans and fence sitters alike.

If you are already a Sonic fan, Sonic X Shadow Generations will be a no-brainer. It has a wealth of content and variety. Gamers who haven’t played a Sonic game in a long time will find that this is a great entry to get back into the series and become acquainted with Shadow, the franchise’s most entertaining character.

One of Sonic’s better games is wonderfully remastered in the shape of Sonic X Shadow Generations, and although there is some exhilarating gameplay here if the time is taken to master the stages, 3D portions still have that familiar inconsistency at times, while Shadow’s story is more of the same but improves on the controls. A huge wealth of unlockables make this the ideal game for series fans, but it is a shame the 3DS levels weren’t remastered to form a meatier compilation.

Sonic X Shadow Generations is a fine game overall. Sonic Generations still holds up quite well after all this time, even if the additions feel slightly shoehorned, while Shadow Generations represents a refinement of the formula with a few additions that don't detract from the main game. For Switch 2 owners who never got this game before, this is a great version to get. However, for those who already have the game on the original Switch, the frame rate and resolution boosts aren't enough to ask for full price on the game and DLC again. Those in that situation can deduct a few points from the review's final score.

Sonic x Shadow Generations feels right at home on Switch 2. Both Sonic Generations and the new Shadow campaign look fantastic, and performance is solid, making these fast-paced platforming experiences a joy to return to time and time again. It's just a shame there's no upgrade path for those who already own the game on the original Switch.

Sonic X Shadow Generations not only offers an improved version of one of the best Sonic games ever but also bundles it with an all-new Shadow Generations campaign, making this package the ultimate Sonic experience and a must-have for any Sonic fan.

The ravages of time are already showing on Sonic Generations, and while visually it's a very good improvement, some of the content changes are unnecessary and the gameplay hasn't aged well. Shadows Generations, by comparison, at least offers something fresh, albeit shorter. But it does manage to entertain, and you can enjoy those few hours with the game. Overall, this remaster isn't bad at all, but it also shows that Sonic has a problem these days and doesn't quite know how to deal with it.

Sonic X Shadow Generations is twice as nice, featuring the same stellar campaign from the original release along with a solid side-story featuring the Ultimate Life Form Shadow the Hedgehog. While this new content doesn’t quite hit the same highs with a number of hands-off sequences, it’s still worth a go for those who just can’t get enough of this malcontent.

Sonic X Shadow Generations could have been a better refresh of the 2011 classic, but this title is worth keeping an eye on. Shadow's campaign is interesting and shows that this character still has a lot to offer us.

Whether or not the combined offering of Sonic Generations and Shadow Generations is worth it will depend heavily on what your expectations for each half of the game are. For my part, I see this as a brand new game starring Shadow the Hedgehog with a remaster of an old game packed in, and by that metric I think it is a stellar package. Sonic X Shadow Generations may spend a lot of time looking at the franchise's past, but it represents the best I've felt about its future in a very long time.

Sonic X Shadow Generations is a mishmash of enjoyable 2D platforming and frustrating 3D sequences. Shadow at least manages to somewhat mitigate the clumsy controls thanks to some interesting gameplay wrinkles. The title also looks good, but probably won't bring the pair of hedgehogs back to the forefront of the genre.

Sonic x Shadow Generations is a consistent and polished experience that reflects the love Sonic Team has for their series and that could absolutely be called a game “made by Sonic fans, for Sonic fans.” But even though Shadow Generations shows players a glimpse into the future, it falls short of being the future itself by being tied to the past through Sonic Generations. It’s a step in the right direction for sure, but with one foot forward and the other backward, it’s difficult to, in good faith, see Sonic x Shadow Generations as a “revival” or a full-on “evolution.” So, though it may provide diehard fans with the time of their life and the disillusioned with just enough hope to keep on going, it doesn’t quite reach the peak needed for it to be a defining moment for the series.

Sonic X Shadow Generations is basically two excellent games in one. Sonic Generations is a remaster of one of the hedgehog's best titles, while Shadow Generations is a new game that is based on the Sonic Frontiers formula to revisit the past of one of the most beloved characters by fans. Shadow's gameplay mechanics are great, the levels are fun and exploring White Space is very good. It is a round package and recommended.

Even though the new additions to Sonic Generations are very welcome, the real star of this package is Shadow. His levels, movements, story and the Overworld White Space are worthy of a character this important, and all the positive things this new campaign does can work perfectly in the next games of both him and Sonic.

Sonic x Shadow Generations stands out as one of the stronger entries dedicated to SEGA's iconic character. While Sonic Generations was already well-received at its original release, the addition of Shadow Generations rounds out the experience, making this collection appealing even to those familiar with the 2011 original. It's not just for longtime fans of the Blue Blur but also for newcomers seeking a modern adventure, especially with the characters gaining renewed popularity thanks to recent films.
