Marvel's Wolverine is a brutal, linear action game with a surprisingly fresh take on its comic-book source material. Its story, characters, combat and presentation are excellent, but repetitive enemies, overly long boss fights and especially frequent bugs hold it back from greatness.

A glitzy Wolverine game with a fun and violent fighting system, and some stealth, that is let down by too much hand holding and not enough faith in the player.

Marvel's Wolverine is a fun, absurdly brutal beat-'em-up. If you know what you're getting into, it's probably the best playable version of Wolverine yet, finally outclassing X-Men Origins: Wolverine. It doesn't quite match the ambition or success of the Spider-Man games, and its repetition and dull traversal occasionally make the experience feel one-note. But if you're a Wolverine fan or simply want a straightforward, frequently satisfying brawler, Wolverine is the best at what it does.

Marvel’s Wolverine is an intense, brutal and visually stunning adventure that proves Insomniac Games is capable of offering something completely different from the Spider-Man stories. The combat is hugely satisfying, and the story makes good use of Logan and his relationships with other heroes, although the linear structure and the repetitive nature of the fights mean that after around 12 hours, it’s hard to find many reasons to carry on playing. This isn’t a Spider-Man with claws, but a full-fledged Wolverine adventure – gritty, bloody and exactly what this hero needed.

Marvel's Wolverine is a good game featuring the beloved mutant. The story is enjoyable and deviates somewhat from expectations. The gameplay offers combat without many surprises, with a cool fighting system (despite some issues) and is slightly deep thanks to the upgrades. The biggest problem is that the game doesn't offer much variety and has a short duration.

Marvel’s Wolverine is a breath of fresh air from the slew of open-world games Sony has released over the past few years. While it’s not as ambitious in scale as the Spider-Man games, its linear direction puts the spotlight on Logan and his story. Its brutal combat kept me entertained throughout my 17-hour playthrough, including one stretch where I played for 12 hours straight. Insomniac delivered the Wolverine game I’ve been waiting for — brutal, bloody, emotional, and unapologetically Logan. By the time the credits rolled, I was already left wanting more.

Insomniac never disappoints when it comes to superheroes. Their take on Wolverine isn't afraid to get his claws dirty, and he proves that through a highly responsive, bloody, and visceral combat system. The limited side content and a few pacing issues in the story don't detract from Logan's strong solo debut in PS5.

A fun and brutal action game with a great Wolverine and satisfying combat, but too linear and uneven to leave a truly lasting impression.

Marvel's Wolverine is an action-packed thrill ride that will put your skills to the test as you fend off hordes of tricky adversaries and massive unforgettable bosses. The constant action does get repetitive and tiresome, though, so keep that in mind before diving in. 🐺

Insomniac has become a victim of its own success with the Spider-Man series. The opening arc certainly opened the game with a bang, but ultimately, a lot of players will see that they’re only mashing the square button most of the time until they complete the game. Marvel’s Wolverine is a game I have seen and played before, with better mechanics and narrative. Given the price tag of NZ $109, the narrative, mechanics, and replayability just doesn’t justify it.

So Marvel’s Wolverine is a complicated package that can be worth the attention for enough fans. The story is solid, and the core gameplay is fun. It gets in its own way by creating unnecessary roadblocks with its camera and unbalanced approach to stealth and parrying. So as a complete package, it just feels a little off. So while this is absolutely a game Wolverine fans will want to check out, everyone else might want to wait for a discount.

Even with its imperfections, Insomniac Games has still carved a new path in the modern superhero gaming genre with Marvel’s Wolverine, serving up a tightly crafted campaign that harks back to a simpler, less bloated time in gaming history.

While we’ve lost that Spider-Man freedom of travel here, we’ve replaced it with brutality and the sheer joy of chaotic violence.

Combined with the often crude way it tries to put the player on his linear path, I would say that there is a lot of room for a clearly better sequel.

Marvel’s Wolverine nails the power fantasy of being one of the world’s most legendary superheroes, but it can’t live up to the lofty heights of the Spider-Man games.

Marvel’s Wolverine delivers exactly what it promises in theory: a raw, bloody adventure focused on the most visceral aspects of the legendary Logan. Insomniac Games nailed the visual atmosphere and characterization of the hero, creating memorable scenarios and cutting-edge graphics. However, the game ultimately falls short of the enormous expectations created by the studio's track record. The choice of a linear format isn't a problem in itself, but the execution suffers from a rather uneven pacing in the middle of the campaign, a combat system that lacks long-term depth, and stealth mechanics that seem almost like a poorly utilized prop. Adding to this, the visible drop in technical polish and bugs in the last third of the adventure detract somewhat from an experience that had everything to be memorable. It's still a must-have and very fun title for die-hard Wolverine and X-Men universe fans, but it's far from being the masterpiece that the Spider-Man games were. It's a good journey, but you would greatly benefit from more time in the oven to fine-tune the pace and fix optimization issues.

I won’t lie—after all the hate, I approached Marvel’s Wolverine with extreme skepticism. My expectations were practically nonexistent, and I assumed from the start that I was in for a total piece of junk. So I was all the more surprised when I finally sat down with the controller in my hands, and with every passing moment, hope began to stir within me. Hope that maybe it isn’t as bad as everyone says. And you know what? It wasn’t at all! Sure, there’s a lot to criticize about this Insomniac Games title, but there’s one thing you can’t deny: it manages to be quite a bit of fun. Of course, that’s assuming you’re looking for a not-too-ambitious superhero roller coaster ride. It’s one of those games where you can settle comfortably on the couch, turn off your brain, and just let yourself be swept away by the spectacular—albeit undemanding—gameplay.

Marvel’s Wolverine delivers satisfyingly brutal combat and captures the physicality of Logan’s claws, but that initial thrill fades quickly.
