Big Helmet Heroes doesn't reinvent the wheel, but manages to highlight what makes a beat 'em up adventure so fun to play.

There's a lot to like about Big Helmet Heroes, it's a delightfully silly and fun side-scrolling beat 'em up, but substantial patches are required to fix the game before contemplating a purchase.

There's a lot of diversity throughout the arcade fighter Big Helmet Heroes, and it's really easy to pick up and get better at. While it may not be everyone's cup of tea, if you like side-scrolling beat-'em-ups, I would definitely recommend it for single and two-player co-op fun.

Big Helmet Heroes is enjoyable solo or with a friend. Its wacky weapon variety and ever changing setting keeps things interesting when the gameplay begins to wear a bit thin. The 28 different discoverable heroes offer a reason to playthrough multiple times, unfortunately its technical issues may make it a one and done adventure.

Big Helmet Heroes is a really fun game with a cool cartoon style. The action never lets up as you are either going to be involved in imaginative fights or undergoing puzzling platform trials. The game can prove to be quite the challenge on harder difficulties and playing with a buddy definitely proves to be more enjoyable and successful during strenuous moments.

Big Helmet Heroes is a very safe choice for young gamers who are new to the genre that won’t overwhelm them with complex mechanics. Being able to pick up weapons allows flexibility to mix and match fighting styles with different classes on the fly while still playing as your favorite character. The toy-like aesthetic will certainly please kids.

Big Helmet Heroes offers a straightforward gameplay experience suitable for young players new to the genre. The game features a weapon system that allows players to experiment with different fighting styles and classes while maintaining their preferred character. The game's aesthetic is designed to appeal to children, and the visual gags offer mild amusement. Older gamers won't connect with this, but newcomers will welcome the presentation and simplicity, without getting bogged down in any grind.

Whilst initially having the potential for epic battles, Big Helmet Heroes swings for greatness with its fun concept and co-operative gameplay, but bugs and frustrations turns victory hits into misses.

Overall, it’s a fun game, especially if you have someone you can play with! Hopefully, the implementation of online co-op will be coming sooner rather than later to have an easier time teaming up with other warriors.

Big Helmet Heroes is a silly game, but that’s by design, which makes it not only silly but a ton of fun, too.

Big Helmet Heroes has big, colourful visuals and a soundtrack to match, but the lack of any online aspect or four -player modes may be a shame to some. It’s a very good looking and sounding adventure with enough humour to keep things light, but it doesn’t quite have the wow factor to hold off the more tedious gameplay aspects of the side-scrolling brawler genre in the long run. Although for short blasts of mindless fun, I tip my helmet to it.

This whimsical romp through ridiculous scenarios with a cast of crazy characters is an excellent outing in levity and enjoyment. Whilst brief, there is tonnes of replayability to be found in either finding all the characters or exploring the harder modes. The plot is as chaotic as the gameplay but Big Helmet Heroes leans into this and pulls it off gloriously. For a price point around $30 AU it’s very hard to go past this, especially if you have a gaming buddy, this could provide way more than just the 4-6 hours of fun I experienced. All in all, if you love fun and have an enlarged noggin then this game is for you!

Big Helmet Heroes is a light and fun experience from start to finish. Whether playing alone or with a friend in co-op, fun is guaranteed without the game ever becoming overly complicated. For these reasons and the "unidirectional" experience, it's probably not a game that will stay on our consoles for long. The depth, longevity, and mechanical variety are not enough for long play sessions. Stage diversification is notable, but combat might not be particularly engaging for more experienced players, nor is there a particularly deep progression and customization system. For younger players or those looking for a quick and fleeting experience, this game is almost a must-buy at a reasonable price.

Big Helmet Heroes is a fun, well-crafted beat ‘em up with tons of personality. Its engaging combat, varied heroes, and stunning visuals make it a joy to play, and the imaginative levels and hilarious weapon choices add to its charm. However, it’s held back by its disappointing co-op implementation, frustrating performance issues, and frequent bugs—particularly on Xbox. If Exalted Studio can iron out these technical issues and maybe even add online multiplayer, this game could easily become a standout in the genre. But as it stands now, it’s a diamond in the rough—polished in some areas, but frustratingly unrefined in others.

Big Helmet Heroes happily fills in the multiplayer beat-em-up-but-in-3D niche to a tee with its look, its controls and gameplay, and overall fun atmosphere and feel. It works just fine and doesn't break down halfway like some indie brawler titles, and does try to switch things up with some fun top-down shenanigans. I'd say give this a try if you want couch co-op beat-em-up fun with giant heads and even bigger hearts.

The controls, which sometimes do not work great in co-op . It seems as if the game cannot handle the busy button bashing, causing the input not to be picked up. It was not due to the controllers themselves or anything like that, so sometimes it is a bit annoying that you cannot activate actions correctly, including your special ability. Furthermore, the game also has minor bugs. For example, the game faltered terribly with the final boss who showed his tentacles on the fleet. Then the level selection became invisible, but after a reset to the main menu this was resolved again. In addition, you will notice that after a few hours of playing the game becomes very much of the same, even though the developer does her utmost to keep the variation in it with different environments and a few side-ways that they manage to offer in the levels. Big Helmet Heroes is, in terms of atmosphere and design, a game after my own heart. The graphics and audio are very strong in terms of atmosphere and the gameplay is also just nice to play, although it never really becomes addictive or impressive. In addition, the game offers quite enough content, especially if you also want to play on the higher difficulty levels. After about five hours I was done with the game, but this is also a title that you can play together on the couch every now and then with a nice beer. In that respect, mission accomplished!

While Big Helmet Heroes has its flaws—such as random bugs, frustrating camera controls, and the absence of multiplayer options—the game's delightful art style, engaging gameplay, and strong level variety make it a joy to play, resulting in a technically imperfect yet charming experience that, while not on par with Castle Crashers, offers a lovable and entertaining alternative.

While it draws clear inspiration from Castle Crashers, Big Helmet Heroes successfully carves out its own identity with new combat mechanics, modern graphics, and its own unique sense of humor. This is a title that can easily be enjoyed by players of any age range.
