Borderlands 4 Reviews
Borderlands 4 delivers everything the previous games in this franchise had to offer. But this one takes it up a notch. Thanks in part to some handy new features, (almost) no loading times and incredibly fun gameplay, the game guarantees hours of enjoyment. Top all that off with a dash of excellent humour and you’ll immediately see why I gave this looter shooter a nine. The autumn season, which is treating us to a shitload of brilliant games, has certainly got off to a flying start with Borderlands 4.

Borderlands 4 largely adheres to the tried and tested formula of prior Borderlands titles. However, I’m sad to say that it ranks at almost the lowest addition to the series for me, with only Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel beating it to the bottom spot. The main story quality and constantly occurring bugs massively detracted from the overall experience, with the audio and visuals being the saving graces. It certainly provides a Borderlands experience, with some welcomed improvements and changes. It’s just not up to the high standards I had anticipated.
Borderlands 4 is fun! Gearbox basically did everything right. They took inspiration from Borderlands 2 without being overly slavish about it. They introduced many small changes, such as a completely new game world that is also relatively open. The story is varied and offers frequent surprises. The only downsides are the occasionally invisible walls at the beginning and the fact that the game starts to lag when playing with multiple players.

All in all, if you are a fan of the basics of the series, this is very much more of the same with a few tweaks. The music may click with a lot of folks, and perhaps there are some that will relish the sheer amount of items and loadouts that you can wangle, but whilst there are thousand of weapons and a huge open world to explore, I can’t help but feel that this is quantity over quality in some areas.
It feels bad to end the review on a bit of a sour note, as Borderlands 4 is truly an incredible package. Gearbox did its homework, addressed complaints with Borderlands 3, and made significant changes to the core gameplay loops that have all come together to create what is surely going to be considered the new benchmark for the series in Borderlands 4. A mature, brilliantly written story, meaningful exploration, improved loot systems, and endless build variety had me losing hours every evening for over a week without even noticing. It’s a huge shame that, as it stands, Borderlands 4 isn’t as easy a recommendation as it should be due to the technical issues currently plaguing both console and PC players, but I have no doubt that Gearbox will continue to be reactive and get patches issued as soon as they can in order to maintain the good will generally being built up by what is otherwise a stellar release and one of 2025’s best video games.
With all that said and even with the issues I had, did I enjoy my time with Borderlands 4? Yes, definitely. From a gameplay perspective, I think this is easily one of the best in the series. The open world and multiple ways to play the Vault Hunters gives players so many choices with just how they want their game to go. Couple that with the sheer amount of stuff to do and find, it’ll have players glued to the game for hours on end. Plus having crossplay brings the community together even more than before.
Borderlands 4 is a good installment in the series. You'll enjoy a great combat system with a rich arsenal of weapons and choose from a bunch of interesting abilities. However, even though GearBox Software makes the most of its flagship brand's strengths, it fails to learn from its long-standing mistakes. These include repetitive level design and, above all, the title's inferior technical condition, which can spoil every other joyful moment of gameplay.

Well, I think that it’s clear I enjoyed Borderlands 4. It brings the tried and tested formula behind every other game of the franchise. It just ramps it up a little bit for the current generation of gamers. Giving you more content than you will ever need, the game aims to bring something new as well. The open world is gorgeous, and with the addition of it being seamless just increased the immersion for me. The last snippet of information I will leave you with is that when you see a dome appear… get in there! Borderlands 4 receives the Thumb Culture Platinum Award.
Borderlands 4 is a fantastic return to form for the divisive franchise. The narrative is a great change of pace from previous entries, immediately separating itself with a far darker tone, higher stakes, and a great cast of both new and familiar characters. Furthermore, the gameplay represents a significant evolution from what one'd expect from the franchise, offering new customization options, features, and a balance of fun both solo and with a friend. While there are some issues, such as bugs and the game's monotonous traversal, I look forward to seeing how Gearbox continues to develop the franchise in the future.
Borderlands 4 is more Borderlands, but it plays better than any other game in the series. Improved movement, a new open world format to go with the new planet Kairos, and a better-written villain than the last entries’ heavily criticized ones. There are some weird parts, a bad and under-functional UI, and some real performance issues, but you would be hard-pressed to find a better looter shooter to play with friends that you haven’t already exhausted by now. I have to give the game its flowers for being a ton of fun to play, despite some questionable design decisions.
Borderlands 4 is not just the new chapter of a legendary saga, but the result of an evolution that has managed to listen to the fans without forgetting its roots. Gearbox has crafted a title that feels both familiar and innovative: the unmistakable artistic direction, the over-the-top, adrenaline-fueled gameplay, the increasingly robust multiplayer, and a finally more substantial narrative make this installment a new benchmark for the genre. Of course, there are a few imperfections: some side missions feel a bit too familiar, the narrative rhythm occasionally dips, and the technical performance, while solid, doesn’t quite push the limits. However, these are minor details that don’t compromise an otherwise thrilling experience. Ultimately, Borderlands 4 is a triumphant return — a game that entertains, surprises, and keeps players glued to the screen for dozens upon dozens of hours. For veterans, it’s a dream come true; for newcomers, it’s the perfect moment to enter a universe dripping with personality and style.

Borderlands 4 marks the absolute peak for the Gearbox Software franchise. It's a huge title that takes advantage of the open world and revamped shooting mechanics to set a new benchmark for all fans of the series. At the same time, the new chapter in the series reconfirms the strengths and weaknesses of the gameplay formula, which is beginning to show signs of fatigue while continuing to sail with the wind in its sails with a gameplay loop that is still tremendously addictive. Furthermore, the technical side of things currently suffers from more than a few uncertainties due to Unreal Engine 5 not being used to its full potential. The new adventure on the planet Kairos is pure excitement and will delight many players. However, some may begin to feel bored by storming yet another Crypt with guns blazing.

Refining the formula that has brought it such success, Borderlands 4 is the definitive looter shooter of this generation. Some technical hiccups take the sheen off what is otherwise a very polished experience that delivers poignant story beats, hearty belly laughs and a smorgasbord of slick, violent action. Despite its technical issues, this is the incremental evolution that Borderlands needed and rewards long time players with callbacks we've waited years to see. A true delight.
Borderlands 4 is a great entry, if you simply just want the amazing gameplay. However, some of the other aspects fall short, like its boring main story characters and horrible UI.
Borderlands 4 stays true to the spirit of the series: chaos, explosions, and loot are all there. The game successfully captures the offbeat humor and unique atmosphere that made the franchise so successful, with cooperative gameplay that is as enjoyable as ever. The side missions are varied, the endgame remains addictive, and the cel-shaded art direction is modern and very polished. Fans will quickly find their bearings, with dynamic combat and a rich and diverse arsenal to choose from.

Borderlands 4 is the long-awaited comeback fans were hoping for: ambitious, freer, more dynamic. While it doesn’t completely reinvent the series formula, it does refine it, perfectly blending humor, chaos, and freedom of action. The addition of a true open world, new Vault Hunters, an almost endless variety of weapons, and a well-structured endgame breathe fresh life into Gearbox’s beloved franchise. Not every innovation hits the mark — technical optimization still needs work, and some exploration limitations slightly reduce the open world’s impact. Nevertheless, Borderlands 4 remains a fun, content-rich shooter full of personality, capable of keeping players engaged for dozens of hours while cracking smiles between bursts of gunfire and outrageous jokes.

Borderlands 4 brought several innovations to the series, which, unfortunately, did not receive as much acclaim as expected. Nevertheless, it managed to fix many of the issues present in the third installment. If you can forgive a few bugs or occasional pacing issues, you’ll get a solid dose of humor and fun.

Borderlands 4 isn’t just another sequel, it’s a reinvention. It honors the series’ roots as the original looter shooter while fixing its most glaring issues. The shift to an open-world structure, the rebalanced humor, the satisfying loot system, and the excellent side missions all combine into a game that feels both modern while still distinctly Borderlands.
Borderlands 4 is the most magnificent broken game I’ve ever played. The shooting mechanics, character progression, and combat satisfaction are absolute masterpieces, but the whole thing drowns in technical issues, a bland story, and chaotic execution. Gearbox has created a diamond — unfortunately, one still covered in dust.

Borderlands 4 marks a confident course correction for the looter-shooter franchise, bringing back the series' core strengths while introducing welcome refinements. Set on the new planet Kairos, the game sheds the baggage of its predecessor with a semi-reboot approach, tighter narrative focus, and satisfying combat. Despite performance hiccups and lackluster menus, it succeeds in recapturing what made Borderlands a genre favorite.
