Bethesda has wisely chosen to call this new version of Oblivion a "remaster" rather than a "remake." After all, while the stunning new visuals might suggest otherwise, the original game's mechanics remain virtually unchanged for better or worse. Oblivion remains a masterpiece capable of engrossing us in its world for dozens of hours, and this Nintendo Switch 2 version further proves that it is possible to experience Cyrodiil in a surprisingly stable, handheld format. However, some of its systems are beginning to show their age.

Even though there are still plenty of flaws, and I believe that players who aren’t swayed by nostalgia will be dissatisfied in some areas, there’s one thing we must always keep in mind. A remaster is a remaster, and The Elder Scrolls is nearly twenty years old.

The game offers tremendous freedom in exploring the expansive map of Cyrodale, from joining factions and rising through the ranks to solving puzzles and helping the local inhabitants. The game will take you on a rich, content-packed journey for hours, but unfortunately, it suffers from performance issues such as stuttering, frame rate drops, and even crashes that can prevent you from completing the game.

I think this remaster is brilliant. Bugs and performance aside, it’s nearly everything I wanted. I do, however, feel that new players may still feel the age of some of the mechanics and the game’s overall composition. If you love Oblivion and this kind of RPGs in general, you will adore this remaster. It’s the best version of Oblivion to play and it will only get better with patches and time. A great job was done to drag it into the modern era while keeping some of the game’s original feel intact.

Oblivion Remastered brings a Bethesda classic into the modern age with great success, while still retaining the core of what we all loved upon first adventuring across Cyrodiil many moons ago. Visually, it’s stunning, and creates a sense of immersion that just wasn’t possible on older hardware, and it speaks to the strength of Bethesda’s original work that all that was needed was a new lick of paint to leave Oblivion Remastered feeling like a wonderfully playable experience that I’ve loved dedicating hours of my life to all over again. The Elder Scrolls VI may be a while away yet, but for now, The Elder Scrolls VI fans rejoice, as you’ve now got a hell of a consolation prize to tide you over for the next few years.
Now is the absolute best time to pick up the old iron sword and start an adventure across the wonderful wilds of Cyrodiil and the devilish lava fields of the daedric realm Oblivion.
We have a remaster of an already incredible title, now with renewed and beautiful visuals. Furthermore, the adventure remains phenomenal, the gameplay fun and full of freedom, the story interesting to follow, and the content vast and rewarding.

In my opinion, the title remains a milestone in the open-world RPG genre. Once you blow the dust off it, you'll find it rich in content, with hundreds of thousands of lines of dialogue, memorable quests and sub-quests, and timeless magic. Are you sure you want to enter?
