Digimon Story Time Stranger is finally a great Digimon-themed JRPG. While it looks a generation older, it makes up for it with a really well-crafted battle and evolution system and a huge catalog of Digimon.

Digimon Story: Time Stranger is a must-play game for anyone who has ever wanted to be a DigiDestin. From deep and engaging combat to a Digivolving system that I became addicted to again, like I did with Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth and Hacker's Memory. Time Stanger took every system, element, and pixel from the first games and built something truly amazing. Running around Japan, the Digital World, or just a sewer, you feel a rush of excitement. Every new encounter, skill upgrade, Digivolution, and new area feels right and bursting with fun. I cannot recommend this game highly enough to anyone, and if you have never experienced Digimon before, this is the perfect time to jump in. The Digiwater is fine.
If Digimon Story Time Stranger just sat back and allowed its largely fantastic RPG systems to breathe, it could be counted amongst the finest of Digimon games. But instead, it gets bogged down in disappointingly linear design that limits combat and party-based progression at almost every turn.Despite being packed with such clear potential, Time Stranger ends up feeling like a frustrating misfire.
Digimon Story: Time Stranger is an excellent entry for the franchise and continues what made the prior Digimon Story games great. The story is fun and engaging with a lot of different choices to make in the narrative and Digimon to level up and digivolve. While some of the mechanics can be a bit complex and the difference in difficulty between normal and Titan battles can be a bit jarring for the unprepared, it won't take long before you're saving both the real and digital worlds like you've been a Digimon Tamer you're entire life.
While I can't guarantee I'll become as big a fan of Digimon as I am of its competition, thanks to this Digimon Story, this former Stranger will certainly give future games the Time of day.
If you're a die-hard fan of this franchise and have played the other Digimon Story games , you definitely shouldn't miss this one. And even if this is your first time with the series, but you love the genre, I think it would be a good idea to give it a try. In fact, there's a demo available to clear up any doubts.

Built with the current generation of hardware in mind at last, this new Digimon Story entry triumphs in fully realizing the vibrant liveliness of the Digital World as it brings along a wealth of solid systems and mechanics to not only make it one of the best Digimon games ever, but just a damn good game in general.
Digimon Story: Time Stranger delivers an excellent narrative, with some weaker side-quests, that builds a living and breathing Digital World where you get to grow with allies. Combat is filled with limitless possibilities and hundreds of cool monsters to grow. It's a fantastic evolution for current Digimon fans, and also a great jumping-on point for those new to the franchise.
Despite this, these are fairly minor bumps in the road that I just wish had played out a little differently. Digimon Story: Time Stranger is a “more than the sum of its parts” RPG if I’ve ever seen one. Its rough parts are worth it if only for the butterfly effect it’ll have on future games in the series. It’s damn good eating for Digimon fans.
Digimon Story: Time Stranger follows up on Cyber Sleuth in some solid ways but falters heavily with its narrative, characters, and exploration.

Digimon Story: Time Stranger is a must-play video game for fans of the series and newcomers alike. It has extreme complexity in the Digivolution and Personality system, but it is also super easy to get your hands on and play.
Its excellent monster-raising systems, thoughtful quality-of-life features and engaging combat make it one of the strongest creature-collecting RPGs I’ve played in recent years.
Digimon Story: Time Stranger is not the bold breakthrough capable of dismantling Pokémon's dominance, but it does mark an important step in the franchise's maturation. It's a game that shows courage in trying to build a modern structure more attentive to players' needs, only to stumble on technical and design choices that drag it back by years.

undefined.Digimon Story Time Stranger is a fine turn-based RPG with creature collecting and some rough story and progression edges. A notable feather in its cap is how smooth it runs and how nice it looks on Switch 2, not to mention miniscule load times both portably and on TV. I'm glad to have finally checked out a modern Digimon game, even if my expectations weren't fully met, and I'm curious what form the next one ends up taking. Maybe start with clear bad guys that aren't just evil Digimon.
But there’s no shame in coming second to Pokémon, the biggest IP in the world, and this is arguably the best Digimon title we’ve ever seen.
I’m not going to go on at length, you’ve lived through 2025, just the same as I have — congratulations on making it this far, incidentally — it’s really just a matter of money and tastes, and the year still isn’t over. I don’t love Time Stranger as much as I do a few other games I’ve played this year, that list will come at the end of the year, God willing, but I do still love it.
If you're a fan of classic shounen Digimon vibes, sixth-generation JRPGs, or monster-collecting games, then Time Stranger is definitely a game you shouldn't miss.

Digimon Story Time Stranger is a great game thanks to its many deep systems, a wide variety of Digimon from different eras, and interesting layers of interaction with them. However, in terms of narrative, it doesn't have a deep story or memorable characters. The side content, dungeon design, and some technical issues also prevent the game from reaching its full potential. However, if you're a fan of Pokemon or the Digimon universe, Story Time Stranger is definitely worth a try.
