Psyvariar 3 is a technical challenge, and an ultra satisfying arcade shooter experience. It's lacking in some much-needed tutorials and introductions, but once you do figure out how to Buzz and Level Up, it opens up one of the most unique and rewarding shoot-em-up games you'll ever experience.

Psyvariar 3 will remain installed on my Nintendo Switch 2 for quite a while simply because of its engaging, highly-difficult, yet highly-rewarding gameplay loop of grazing bullets and racking up high scores. It falls short in the graphical department, but it makes up for it in properly executing a bullet hell that caters for those who want a true shmup challenge.

Psyvariar 3 proves that the series' core formula can evolve without sacrificing what made it memorable in the first place. The signature buzz system remains intact; it works exceptionally well once you understand its mechanics. The addition of multiple ships with meaningful differences adds considerable depth, while the varied difficulty settings and game modes give the experience lasting appeal. For shoot-'em-up fans, Psyvariar 3 is well worth a look, especially if you're seeking something that stands apart from the genre's usual conventions.

Psyvariar 3 is quite an ugly game, but it makes up for it with solid vertically-scrolling shooter gameplay and a wide range of playable characters and modes.

Psyvariar 3 is a fun and addictive bullet hell shmup. The game has a lot of depth and variety due to the diversity of characters to use and the myriad of game modes to choose from. A proper optional tutorial mode/level would’ve been a nice addition here so newcomers to the series can be put through the ringer properly before jumping in the carnage. That being said, Psyvariar 3 is one of the best shmups out there. Whether you’re a hardcore fan of the genre or looking to take plunge, Psyvariar 3 is worthwhile entry.

Psyvariar 3 is a very welcome return, a ferocious, technical and surprisingly generous shoot-'em-up in content, which demonstrates how the genre still has so much to say.

Psyvariar 3 is a fantastic new addition to the series and the shmup genre in general. It’s as close to a gateway game to the franchise as you’ll find outside of Angel at Dusk, and I mean that with all the respect and admiration intended. It is ideal for newcomers who want an easy entry into the genre, and shmup fanatics who want to really test their skills on the greater difficulties. SUCCESS made the right choice in handing the Psyvariar baton over to SophStar developer BananaBytes and Red Art Studio. The game is another feather in their ever-expanding shmup cap, and a title that should be commended for providing an impressive amount of content for a genre that often manages to get by with the bare minimum. It grazes by with near-perfect marks for gameplay, but sadly doesn’t stick the landing when it comes to the presentation.

The Banana Bytes team managed to avoid giving the impression of pure homage in Psyvariar 3, instead creating a worthy sequel that maintains what gives the work its identity without being a mere copy that could be seen as a fangame.

Psyvariar 3 is a very solid return for a series that had been silent for over two decades, maintaining its identity based on constant risk and the buzz system, which remains as addictive as ever. Its enormous variety of modes, characters, and options make it a surprisingly complete and replayable shoot 'em up, especially for those who enjoy delving into its systems. It's not a perfect game, with uneven audiovisuals and some balance issues between characters, but it is a very consistent, fun experience that stays true to its legacy. It's one of those titles that clearly gets better the more you play it.
