Echo Generation 2 Reviews

Echo Generation 2 is a fun deckbuilding game with a unique approach to multiple protagonists and a number of deep story driven worlds. Unfortunately for all of the phenomenal setup, the back half of the game doesn't stick the landing, instead rushing into an Act 3 that's a simple battle gauntlet.
Echo Generation 2 is the breakthrough Cococucumber has been striving for over the years: a sequel—which is actually a prequel—that finally gives the series a more mature and cohesive identity, thanks to a sci-fi setting with nods to the ’80s and ’90s and a rather intriguing storyline. All of this is complemented by a new combat system that combines classic turn-based gameplay with deckbuilding. In this way, the Canadian team has managed to create gameplay that is more dynamic and unpredictable. The whole experience is enhanced by top-notch visuals, thanks to the skillful use of voxel art.

Echo Generation 2 is a thoroughly enjoyable sci-fi adventure that’s only let down by some pacing issues and a harsh difficulty spike at the end. It’s visually spectacular, the soundtrack is brilliant, the characters are charming, and it has an enjoyable combat loop… it just doesn’t quite stick the landing perfectly. But hey, it still makes for a really good time, and if you were a fan of the first game, it’s definitely worth checking out. Sure, it changes things up, but the refinements ensure it feels fresh and, most importantly, a lot of fun to play.
Echo Generation 2 is a visually strong sequel with solid turn-based deck combat and a cool multi-character chapter structure, but it suffers from linear design, slow pacing, and uneven storytelling. Fun systems, but weaker exploration and narrative than the first game.

Despite the missteps, Echo Generation 2 is a bold, imaginative follow up that fans of the original – and fans of quirky sci fi RPGs in general – will find plenty they enjoy in. Just be prepared: the final duel might test your patience more than your deck building skills.
Echo Generation 2 blends multiverse storytelling, stylish retro visuals, and surprisingly deep deck-building combat into a charming sci-fi adventure. Beneath its colourful pixel art world lies a genuinely satisfying tactical RPG that constantly rewards experimentation and curiosity.

Echo Generation 2 deliberately reinvents itself, though not always successfully. Its tighter structure and fragmented storytelling show Cococucumber’s intent to reshape the series, but in doing so the game sacrifices the free exploration, adventure‑game touches, and sense of discovery that made the original shine. The new deckbuilding combat works and adds depth, yet it can’t fill the gap left by a flatter world design and a finale that never fully pays off its promising setup. It remains visually and tonally striking, with a distinctive mix of sci‑fi, irony, and nostalgia, but the sequel feels less emotionally and adventurously impactful—more solid as a game, less memorable as an experience. A step forward and a step back that leaves the franchise’s future direction uncertain.

It may not be the deepest and most complex deck builder and RPG out there, but Echo Generation 2 has a ton to offer. The game's story is a fantastic sci-fi epic that lands nearly all of its themes and ideas, and the core gameplay loop is a lot of fun.
Echo Generation 2 is a major improvement over the first game. They’ve sanded away most of its gameplay rough edges, with only a final chapter that requires too much repetition as a standout issue. It is a gorgeous title, with fun combat and great music that is well worth a playthrough, especially if you have Game Pass.
