Onimusha: Way of the Sword is a fantastic return for one of the most promising franchises in the entire industry. With an excellent story and exceptional combat, Capcom hits the mark once again, delivering a title that is a true spectacle. Capturing the best of its blend of samurai and horror, it transforms into an exciting and action-packed experience that should be remembered as one of the best of the year.

The way of the samurai shines bright in Onimusha: Way of the Sword, marking a triumphant return for Capcom's long-running action RPG series.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword marks a fascinating yet overly conservative return for Capcom's iconic franchise, starring the legendary Miyamoto Musashi. While boasting stunning cinematic direction, top-tier voice acting, and rock-solid technical performance on PS5, the game is held back by a passive AI, an overly permissive difficulty curve, and a combat system that pulls its punches. It's a solid, beautiful foundation for a series revival, though it ultimately lacks the necessary bite to truly master its craft.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is another win for Capcom. It's a game with stellar combat that stumbles when it comes to its open-world design and side content. Luckily, when it's time to cross swords, this game is incredibly fun

Onimusha: Way of the Sword's super-fun sword combat really packs a punch and is the star of the show along with the ridiculous game world and cast of characters that'll make things a lot more entertaining if they click with you. 👹

Onimusha is back, and with a strong entry to make its case as one of Capcom’s best. With responsive combat and great flow between animations, it’s a great time for fans of action games. While some aspects of the original franchise might be a little weak, Way of the Sword managed to build its own identity without feeling too derivative of other titles like it. It starts strong and can only grow from here.

The amount of effort seen here gives me hope for Capcom’s future attempts at reviving classic titles, as Onimusha: Way of the Sword, the latest title of the once dormant franchise, comes back in the best way possible as it very well might be my game of the year contender.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword presents a decent story that’s held up by its absolutely stellar combat.

I may not have expected much from Onimusha: Way of the Sword, but it still found ways to pleasantly surprise me. It’s one of the most enjoyable games I’ve played this year. And much of that is because it’s just so much fun. The game knows what it is and leans into the samurai theme instead of trying to replicate a formula that may have worked for some other developer. When I do get the time, I’ll definitely be chasing every Steam achievement for this game. It’s for this reason that I give it the Thumb Culture Platinum Award!

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is a successful comeback for the long-dormant series. Its fluid combat makes one-on-one duels the game's strongest moments, even if chaotic fights against groups, linear levels and some needless backtracking hold it back.

I really wanted to love this game. Especially because every now and then brilliant highlights shine through showing what could have been. I thoroughly enjoyed the linear sections and the boss fights in particular were so outstanding that they made battling through the rest of the game worthwhile on their own. However Onimusha: Way of the Sword gets so bogged down in extra content that it seems to lose sight of its own strengths, ultimately dragging on for at least 15 hours too long.

Despite its flaws, Onimusha is one of the most fun games of the past nine months, in all its imperfections. This is thanks to a well-structured, well-built combat system, incredible direction, and a damn charismatic protagonist we already miss.

Onimusha Way of the Sword is an extremely solid hack and slash action packed game with a lot of button bashing combat in between the far more technical boss battles (which can be brutally punishing on the normal difficulty setting). Casual gamers might struggle here while seasoned veterans of Soulslike games like Sekiro or Bloodborne will love this.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is an incredible, imperfect game. When it’s good, it’s excellent, and I ended up having a fantastic experience with a series that, until a week ago, meant absolutely nothing to me.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is a robust game and a great addition to the Nintendo Switch 2 library. Even with some graphical and performance limitations, particularly when playing in docked mode, the game still delivers a solid experience in handheld mode. The repetition, some extremely linear sections, and a campaign that feels a bit stretched out do weigh the experience down, but they don’t take away from the fact that this is still a good game. It’s a great choice for longtime fans of the series, as well as anyone who enjoys a good hack-and-slash game, sword-based combat, and a samurai setting mixed with supernatural elements. It’s not a game I would consider revolutionary in any particular aspect, but it does a good job of keeping you entertained for several hours, even with all the repetition mentioned above.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword delivers a spectacular return for the series, combining deep, fluid sword combat, outstanding boss fights, brutal finishers, and a surprisingly engaging story with a charismatic Miyamoto Musashi. Its excellent main missions, striking atmosphere, and expressive character animations shine, but repetitive side activities, unnecessary grinding, limited enemy variety, and an overly stretched campaign prevent this otherwise fantastic action adventure from reaching its full potential.

Its highs are so high I think it’s well worth traversing the valleys to get there. But those valleys are wide and they’re not getting any narrower. Every once in a while you need to remember that the cookie is every bit as important as the cream in an Oreo, that you need something solid to chew on to enjoy yourself. Onimusha is a tasty cookie, I just wish I could scrap some of the filling out.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is a fantastic game. Following Resident Evil Requiem, Monster Hunter Stories 3, and Pragmata, Capcom has achieved a "four out of four" with this game, creating a great series in 2026.
