There’s several interesting systems at work here that never quite come together and gel.

Combat sequences can be a bit long, The text story is slightly on the dull side. But it really makes up for it's challenging and engaging combat style.

One to try for fans of strategy RPGs, Children of Zodiarcs has a solid combat system with an interesting hook. The game is let down by a poorly told story that fails to satisfy but it does have it's moments nonetheless.

Children of Zodiarcs is a noble effort at a fresh take on classic turn-based SRPGs.

With so much variety in the Switch eShop I firmly believe there's a place for everything and likely an audience that will likely enjoy it all, it's just tough when I hit a game that doesn't do it for me...

Children of Zodiarcs plays out in a series of levels and missions in which your rag tag group of orphans, that all seem to possess some astonishing powers, must over come the enemy in turn-based combat.

As a story, Children of Zodiarcs is a little lacking, but if you don't mind some grinding the mix of combat, card and dice system is a delight. Although some characters are less useful than others, the fights are enough to pull you through if a tactical RPG is what you are looking for.

Children of Zodiarcs does well to stand with the heavyweights. It has enough uniqueness to it that you won’t consider it another clone. The banter between characters is excellent. While I enjoyed the orchestrated soundtrack, voice acting was missed. It would have done so much to add to this great game.

Children of Zodiarcs is a turn-based RPG that leaves out the most classic style of the genre by adding dice and cards. What does not change is the style of the story, typical of RPGs, but it does not stop hooking and filling us with curiosity. Social criticism is more present than ever, this time with children as protragonists.

To put it simply, Children of Zodiarcs is a fantastic, challenging and hugely enjoyable tactical RPG; however, a lack of variation in its gameplay stops it from being so much better. Each battlefield, though simple, is a tremendous task to navigate round and conquer, with each mission asking more from you than the last.

Speaking broadly, Children of Zodiarc is a rather ambitious title, feeling somewhat scaled down. Perhaps its biggest flaw is that it leaves players wanting for more, which can also be considered a compliment. It honestly feels at home in Square Enix' own catalogue, and it's a shame that the publisher presumably had no role in funding. This is a title rich with potential and passion from its developers, but it's still very short and sweet.

Children of Zodiarcs does so much with so little that its only flaw seems to be that it's not as close to perfection as it could be. Nevertheless, fans of the genre are highly advised to try it out, as the inclusion of card-based skills and specialised dices manage to offer a fine example of an SRPG that's original, challenging, and all around fun.

All in all, Children of the Zodiarcs is a handsome merging of two beloved game types and one that manages to capture the best of them.

Tactical RPG combined with a card-case system. Despite its western origins, the title draws on a handful of solutions from Japanese production, adding something from itself. Quite decent production with a serious, dark plot and unconventional characters.

Children of Zodiarcs mixes a collection of disparate mechanics in just the right way. Coupled with an endearing story, fans of the SRPG genre will no doubt love playing the game's skirmishes long after they are finished with the story mode. However, an absolutely brutal AI will keep more casual fans from enjoying much of the story if they cannot come to grips with the game's systems. So, the difficulty is a double-edged sword, even on Normal. Still, for those of you able to weather the storm of the computer's assaults, the reward of developing a winning strategy pays off immensely. Children of Zodiarcs is a bargain at $17.99, and has plenty of content to sink your teeth into.

An enjoyable experience which seems perfect for any card games fan; like the old Metal Gear Acid and Final Fantasy Tactics: turns and lots of strategy to develop.

Children of Zodiarcs is a charming little tale that fits very comfortably in the Venn diagram between tactical RPG's and games of luck.

Children of Zodiarcs is a great example of passion and innovation. A kickstarter that succeeded in funding and rewarded everyone in the process. A great example of what a studio can achieve when the right people behind it.

Simple in its implementation but opening the door to something both unique and complex, the team over at Cardboard Utopia has really done something impressive.
