CD Projekt Red have delivered an exceptional adventure in Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales. One that any Witcher fan should not hesitate to experience. While Gwent is undeniably fun, it falls short of its full potential in a single-player only game with AI opponents.

Between its incredible story, excellent gameplay, and surprisingly fantastic presentation factor, Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is yet another masterpiece from CD Projekt Red that pushes the boundaries of game design and proves that anything, even a card game, can be groundbreaking if done well.

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is a card game that takes certain elements from Role Playing and Puzzle genres and manages to introduce a new series based on the world of Witcher. despite this, it's not similar to the famous Gwent game from the Witcher 3 and is a completely new game.

CD Projekt did it again. It's not just a Gwent-game, it's a brand new Witcher story.

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales offers beauty in a very unexpected genre, mastering the art of storytelling combined with amazing RPG elements, to memorable characters and gut-wrenching decisions that challenge your values and morale. It presents a card game we’ve previously been introduced to, GWENT, that sucks players in, even those who are not fans of card games.

Though tainted by a broken difficulty mode, Thronebreaker stands on the shoulders of The Witcher as a morally complex and often harrowing Macbethian tale of royal revenge and revolt.

I love that CD Projekt Red's solution to getting more players on board with its free-to-play card game was to produce a massive standalone RPG with all the spellbinding storytelling that's become a signature of The Witcher brand. It's the sort of thoroughness and commitment to quality they've built a reputation on, and Thronebreaker now paves the way for an exciting new genre of card games that incorporate a similar design ethos.

I spent thirty hours with Thronebreaker and, while a couple of hours were me moving through the motions of easy gwent matches, the vast majority saw me hooked to the screen either listening to the narrator and cast of characters bringing scenes to life or trying to figure out how to stop spies making it from one end of the gwent table to the other. If you want a great story set in the Witcher world, then I recommend Thronebreaker.

With that said, Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales alone is worth the journey. Even if you're not a major Gwent fan, the custom scenarios and puzzles could spark new interest and compel you to explore a significant chapter in the Witcher lore.

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is an unique mix of a card game and a RPG, that gives gamers a chance to reminisce about Heroes of Might and Magic and The Witcher trilogy. It's almost a duty for the Witcher universe fans.

Apart from the fact that combat is resolved by placing cards into rows as opposed to moving units across a map, there's little difference between Thronebreaker and similarly hand-drawn, resource-gathering, unit-upgrading games like Heroes of Might and Magic and The Banner Saga. If anything, Thronebreaker offers a deeper strategic experience, given the distinct feel of these custom-crafted battles, with their special victory conditions and unique cards.

Loyal fans of Sapkowski and CD Projekt RED will be pleased to visit familiar places and battles from the books, but for an ordinary player the storyline will seem like a pale shadow of The Witcher 3 and its additions. Mew's journey is interesting in some moments, but still it cannot be compared with the adventures of Geralt.

Thronebreaker gives those into the card game a good opportunity to test their skills and earn a few new cards and bonuses, while also offering an interesting way for those more into the narrative side of The Witcher the chance to enjoy more time in the world, though it never manages to portray the best of either element.

Gwent became a means to an end by the finale, a necessary thing to do to unlock the next story segment, and something I would avoid when possible. Its a shame because Thronebreaker does some good work modifying the familiar Gwent rules, they just get easily overshadowed by the main storyline and the various decisions you can find along the way.

The Witcher Tales is a strange potion that is surprisingly good. From a logical point of view, a game that mixes so many genres together can't be this amazing, but then comes CDPR, a company that is just unable to develop bad titles.

Thronebreaker is a great way to learn how to play Gwent for beginners, but it will leave veteran Gwent players completely unchallenged even on the hardest difficulty.
