While the game itself is fairly solid mechanically, when it’s firing on all cylinders and working its hardest to bring you the best it has to offer, it is merely okay. Unfortunately, most of the time the experience is pretty lackluster, and ultimately its problem is that it doesn’t do anything new – despite its quirky premise, it feels uninspired. It feels less like the euphoria of a cat café, and more like tending a litter box.

Much as I enjoyed playing the game, it left me a little conflicted. While the style and controls are fantastic, there just isn’t a lot of meat on the bone for ravenous Metroidvania fans. That said, I enjoyed all the time I spent with Gato Roboto, and other than the aforementioned glitches, it played effortlessly. For $7.99 I couldn’t put the game down, and that says a lot. Once the developers manage to fix that glitch, you can add another star to my score. But for now, I could only highly recommend this one to other hardcore Metroidvania addicts like myself. Here’s hoping we see more adventures with Kiki from doinksoft in the near future.

Gato Roboto is a bite-sized trek that's sufficiently programmed for the right amount of enjoyment. With enough charm to last a Sunday afternoon, Kiki's escapade is sure to leave behind a pleasant memory or three. Just be sure to keep expectations in check.

Gato Roboto has some wonderful aesthetic choices and innovative boss fights, but the awfully short length and generic enemy design hamper an otherwise quirky title.

Devolver's new Metroidvania-lite game Gato Roboto is an entertaining monochromatic Metroid homage, but isn't particularly memorable or deep.

Gato Roboto is far from purrfect. The boss fights are a delight, challenging me every step of the way and rewarding me for patience and determination. Everything else, though, is just a bit too safe and unoriginal. From familiar environments to basic upgrades and uninventive gameplay, Gato Roboto is an okay, standard Metroid-style game. In a world where so many titles fall into that genre, though, you can easily find something similar to play that has a bit more originality to it.

While the rewards in hidden areas aren't as satisfying as you might expect from a game like this, Gato Roboto's tense, creative boss battles with a talking rodent are an absolute delight.

So I guess what I'm saying is, if you go into Gato Roboto with the only expectation being "Metroid but with a cat protagonist," you won't likely be disappointed. But if you hope for anything beyond that, you'll likely wind up entertained but unsatisfied.

Gato Roboto is everything you'd expect from a Metroidvania and, importantly, everything you'd want.

Without ever excelling or innovating in any element of its design, Gato Roboto proves to be a cohesive and immediate experience.

A game with a lot of personality and charm... but far too simple in every other aspect, especially when compared with the best examples of the metroidvania genre. Nevertheless, Gato Roboto is pretty fun, and few games let you become the more powerful cat in the entire universe (none, really).

Gato Roboto is a short, sharp burst of Metroid fun, with cats. It sounds daft, but strong level design and a few original tweaks make it well worth a look.

Devolver Digital is hitting it out of the park this year with their indie game lineup, adding Doinksoft's Gato Roboto to its growing list of must-play games. This adorable game, which they have cleverly referred to as a "meowtroidvania" is a fantastic, albeit short, experience that distills the genre down to its core, delivering a bite-sized adventure that feels right at home on Nintendo Switch.
