If you want a sci-fi, difficult timing-based combat game with that unforgiving hardcore Dark Souls touch, you can't go wrong with The Surge 2.

The Surge 2 rises above both its technical limitations and its predecessor to set itself apart in the action RPG genre. It could even be debated that it makes a case for being lumped in with its genre cohorts - a case that is strong indeed thanks to its innovation and willingness to change and improve upon the foundations set in the first game. While it flits in and out of being a smooth-sailing and sleekly presented package, it nevertheless provides a walloping good time and can't be faulted for its enjoyable combat and exploration, navigation issues aside.

The Surge 2 is an extremely addictive and enjoyable game, thanks to its dynamic and fun combat. In terms of mechanics and gameplay, the game is a significant improvement over its predecessor. Unfortunately it ends up failing in the same aspects as the first game. All of this, coupled with various performance issues, eventually takes away some of the brilliance the title had to offer.

Deck13 addressed every single issue that held The Surge back in The Surge 2. It is not even necessary to have played the first, since the sequel has almost no connections to it outside of its gameplay mechanics and systems.

All in all, The Surge 2 is a great game to pick up if you're looking for a more arcade-like take on the Dark Souls formula. It's a fun and engaging game with a solid combat system and enjoyable mechanics, and it's only dragged down by a mediocre story and lackluster environments. With the excellent improvements from The Surge to The Surge 2, the franchise is well on its way to standing tall in the Soulsborne genre. It's well worth playing if you're an aficionado of this genre and don't mind dying a few times.

My time in Jericho City has been a combat fueled, cyberpunk nightmare come true. What we have here is a sequel that sticks to what it the series does well and expands on it. The bigger maps and hub like city have been an absolute joy to explore. The fighting is as visceral and engaging as ever. The boss battles are demanding and sometimes towering. The defeats will be devastating, the victories bitter sweet. The Surge has returned and it’s time to put on the exosuit, start the body modification, and figure out what happened to Jericho City.

These are still pretty minor grievances because all The Surge 2 really needed to do to be an improvement was to be a bit more interesting, and it's definitely that. Refined combat, an intriguing and varied place to explore, and just more variety, in general, are huge contributors to The Surge 2's success as a hardcore action RPG and as a sequel. It's not ripping up any rulebooks or striking out with all that much fresh ambition, but it is a supremely confident followup to a bang average game.

The Surge 2 is a fantastic addition to the PS4 library and will please fans of challenging action-adventure games. It offers satisfying and rewarding gameplay in spades and will melt through your time like a hot knife through butter if you let it. I have no reservations in giving this golden child the Thumb Culture Gold Award. Well done!

The Surge 2 fixes some of the faults of its predecessor, but some still remain. Despite that, DECK13's newest outing still remains enjoyable. If you're a fan of "soulslikes", you definitely won't choose wrong here.

The Surge 2 is a satisfyingly challenging game with fluid, fast and intense combat that rewards players investment. It’s not going to change the minds of Soulsborne detractors, but it’s got enough smart, unique features and interesting evolutions of the genre’s systems to put it on the radar of its fans. It’s far from a FromSoftware level game, but it’s a worthy alternative with a lot to offer.

The Surge 2 is better than its predecessor in almost every regard. If you liked the first game, you're going to love this one.

The bottom line, The Surge 2 is a fairly large shift in the series and amputations are simply satisfactory. However, if I stop talking for a while as a serial killer and rather focus on the technical state of the game, I have to mention loading textures. The level is missing many times, even you or other characters. It doesn't matter if you play the performance mode or frame rate mode on consoles. The title is simply less optimized than the first episode, which, together with other shortcomings, drops the recommendation rate to 8 points out of ten. Number one earned 4 points out of 5 in the old ranking, which could be compared to the current seven to eight. So it is up to you whether you try the first episode first or jump straight into the actions and nerves of Jericho.

One of the things that’s hard to admit is that despite its performance issues, The Surge 2 is fantastic and the Premium Edition assures this to newcomers and veterans alike with plenty of DLC (coming in a separate review) to enjoy.

Thanks to a compelling combat system and a deep character customization, The Surge 2 is a better game than the previous one, but fails to stay close to the giants of the genre.

Although The surge 2 is just another souls-like game, the special combat experience somewhat creates a unique feeling that we are playing as a human size Gundam, which is superb and impressive. Besides that, enemy's AI design and all the voice acting in the game is really frustrating.

The Surge 2 stays despite of a bunch of nice changes the only Souslike title that is only recommendable for hardcore fans. Neither the story, nor the boss fights are memorable and many weak design decisions everyone will encounter through their playthrough makes this title as arduous as The Surge.

The Surge 2 doesn’t feel like a massive technological step forward from the original, but on the narrative and gameplay front, it exceeds or refines the experience. Jericho City is a joy to explore, the narrative is more complex, bosses more numerous, and the excellent combat and progression system still engaging.
