MediEvil shows that it's possible to take a classic and completely remake the look from the ground up but still make it feel as it once did two decades ago.

If you've any nostalgia for this retro Sony title, or are looking for something spooky to play this Halloween, MediEvil has never been better -- just be wary of the skeletons in its closet.

MediEvil finally makes the transition from PS1 to PS4 in a spectacular new remake that fans have been clamoring for. The Tim Burton-esque beauty and clever gameplay has held up incredibly well for a twenty-year-old game but some precarious camera angles and clumsy combat keep the game from perfection.

MediEvil is about as faithful as a remake can be. While some of its systems may feel archaic by today's standards, for fans of the original, it's still well worth making a return trip to Gallowmere, if only to see how beautiful it all looks now.

MediEvil is a lazily made remake that preserves many of its original flaws, while only doing enough to bring the game up to speed in the current generation of consoles.

MediEvil brings back memories of the PS1 era, but more than clearly highlights the weaknesses of video games from the 1990s

The new MediEvil remaster stays faithful to the original, for both good and bad. Fans will enjoy seeing Sir Daniel's adventures come to life in full HD, but anyone looking for a brand new action/adventure/platformer might find the old-school PS1 controls and mechanics more than a little jarring.

As someone who was equally enthralled and terrified by the original duo of games, this is an unfortunate dissapointment.

This remake of MediEvil stumbles in the gameplay department, failing to bring life into its resurrected protagonist's rusty old bones.

MediEvil is a loveable, charming romp through a classic action game that unfortunately suffers because of overly stiff controls and combat that often feels imprecise and impractical

This remake of MediEvil is of high quality, both in terms of graphics and sound. The work on the music is excellent and it is a pleasure too travel again through Gallowmere landscapes with Sir Daniel Fortesque.

In the end, MediEvil is a rather rough remake. In terms of graphics and style, it does a fantastic job of bringing the kingdom of Gallowmere to modern times. It’s just everything else that is stuck in the past

There's something really special about MediEvil getting a well-deserved remake beyond the visual and audio glow-up. It provides the title with a chance to break out of the confines of relative obscurity to reach a wider audience. MediEvil deserves all of this and more with its fantastic tone, entertaining characters and story, excellent level design, and stellar pacing, even if a few issues hold it back. If you haven't played it before you'd be doing yourself a disservice by not giving it a go, and if you have played it before, rejoice in Fortesque's skeletal embrace.

For those entering in here for the memories of a beloved game, I don’t want to knock the experience for you. This is the game you love! But unlike aforementioned remakes, nostalgia seems like a necessity to enjoy MediEvil rather than just being a bonus. Let all brave knights beware.

Medievil's biggest downfall is its rigid adherence to its source material, anachronistic gameplay elements and camera controls included. As much as I wanted to enjoy my time within the charming limits of Gallowmere, all too often I'd find my enthusiasm dampened due to the imprecise combat and clunky controls.
