When the only gripes I have are some online flaws and a bit of lacking variety with certain enemy types, that’s pretty much a good sign that the game is solid all around. Still a bummer that the online situation isn’t fixed yet, but at the very least, local-play and the 1v1 battle modes are still absolutely worth your time, and I cannot recommend this game enough. It just misses the bar for being a perfect game in my book, but I still consider this to be the best in the SOR series, proving that you can return to an old franchise and make it even better.

Streets of Rage 4 is an excellent brawling title, one of if the not the best within the genre in literal decades.

Online woes aside, Streets of Rage 4 is the gold standard for what a beat ’em up should be and a triumphant return to form for the series. The road to its release has been long and at times uncertain, but Dotemu, Guard Crush Games, and Lizardcube have managed to deliver a game that was well worth the 26-year wait. With stellar visuals, an unforgettable soundtrack, and a wealth of modes to enjoy, this is one game you need to have in your collection.

Streets Of Rage 4 is a pleasant plunge into the past, a video game with roots rooted in tradition that manages to rejuvenate thanks to a fun combat system like those present in modernity. The title is also the umpteenth demonstration of the quality that Lizardcube puts in its products from a technical point of view, with wonderful sprites, background of absolute value and a generic feeling as respectful of the original as ready to make new proselytes. All this is best enjoyed by the player if you have the opportunity to play it in company, mode where the title shines brightly. One of the funniest experiences in recent gaming history for anyone with a sofa, beers and someone to play with.

Respecting the classic trilogy and modernizing some fundamental points, the game fantastically revives one of the most iconic series of beat 'em ups. It also deserves praise for offering an experience that appeals to both its old school audience and those who will now start fighting over the streets of Wood Oak City. The wait has been long, but Streets of Rage 4 presents us with a game that honors and expands the rich legacy of the franchise.

Streets of Rage 4 is everything I could have wanted in a sequel to such a venerable series that I’ve always held in such high regard. It’s clear that both Lizardcube and Guard Crush get it. They managed to create a sequel that belongs right alongside its predecessors despite having to manage fan expectations and the ever present nostalgia that can inflate people’s memories of the old games, particularly after some three decades and change. It’s a prime example of how to modernise a bygone genre without abandoning the spirit of it, all while capturing the feeling of what made it so special and fun all those years ago. This is an absolutely mandatory play for any Streets of Rage or scrolling beat ’em up fan. I also recommend anyone with a penchant for old school gaming sensibilities to definitely give this a go.

26 years is a very long time for Streets of Rage 4, especially when it comes to the video game industry. To put it into perspective, in 1994, Rare and Nintendo released the first Donkey Kong Country, Sony was putting the finishing touches to the Playstation which was due to release in Japan in that December, and Sega released Streets of Rage 3 worldwide in June. Most series that haven’t had an entry in that amount of time is long considered dead.

In an era of remakes and remasters, bringing a new entry to a long dormant series is a bold and difficult thing to do. Streets of Rage 4 adds modern stylings to its classic aesthetic and gameplay to create a modern mash-up that is hard to put down.

Streets of Rage 4 becomes, in its own right, one more numbered SoR. Lovers of the genre will have a great time with a title that offers everything that made the beat 'em up of the 90s great. And also, it is seasoned with light but very functional novelties. It is fun, and even epic if we play together. And although it is a bit short, it offers a lot of replayability. Essential for fans of the saga and perfect to get started in the genre thanks to its multiple configuration possibilities.

Every old school franchise should be so lucky to get such a great sequel that obviously had a lot of thought and care put in by the teams involved. Clearly, if you enjoy Streets of Rage or the side scrolling brawler, especially when playing with up to three other people, Streets of Rage 4 should be on your list of titles to get.

All-in-all, this is the most fun I've had with multiplayer these past few months, and I'd recommend this game to both newcomers and Streets of Rage fanatics alike. Not only is this a heartfelt throwback to the golden years of couch co-op, but it's also an extremely well-balanced and impeccably crafted romp through a city in need of saving.

Despite having a hefty 26 year gap between Streets of Rage 3 and Streets of Rage 4, the franchise has thankfully not missed a step. It's a familiar, safe, cocktail of furious on-screen fighting, blood-pumping dance beats and enchanting visuals.
