Maneater isn't exactly Jaws, but it isn't Sharknado either. Crunching up hapless beachgoers and exploring underwater wonders is fun, even if the game's bite is often blunted by clunky controls, repetitive missions, and a myriad of technical issues. Proceed with caution, but if you're into sharks and can keep your expectations in check, Maneater's treacherous waters may be worth wading into.

Maneater plays its hand early, as the novelty of being an almost unstoppable apex predator thrown into an unforgiving ocean doesn't have much depth to it. What Maneater does have though, is a meaty world worth exploring, a fascinating system of evolution and whip-smart writing that adds colour to your deep blue killing spree.

The game has its moments, and just roaming around is good for a couple of minutes of watery entertainment. But its clunky combat and repetitive, tedious gameplay means that, despite its toothy protagonist, Maneater lacks any bite.

Despite a fair amount of repetition and simple design, Maneater offers a surprisingly fun atmosphere with lots of bloody action to sink your teeth into.

If you’re after a big dumb shark game, Maneater will scratch that itch. The quality of the gameplay and some of its RPG mechanics might make you wish there was some more depth and variety to it all though.

Maneater squanders some of its potential, but it's perfect for a rainy weekend when you're craving something original. With some tweaks and patches, it'll have an even brighter legacy; or at the very least, become a cult classic alongside more out-there projects in gaming history like Stubbs the Zombie.

While its story missions and their variety can be improved upon, especially when it comes to the endgame, Maneater is an absolute blast.

Maneater is weird, different, and just flat-out fun. I had to see where this story was going, and I thoroughly enjoyed its developments

All in all, life in the waters is good these days. I swim with the grace of a dolphin and the speed of a cheetah. However, when it comes to attacking fish and humans and itty-bitty baby seals, I will confess I am quite clumsy.

Maneater's monster-shark feeding frenzy is fun but simple, and that lack of depth causes it to become repetitive as time goes on.

Maneater is a crazy concept come to life, Tripwire somehow managing to cobble together a silly ShaRkPG that is more than just a ten-minute novelty. There's no denying it's an exotic catch, but when it comes to quality open world action games, there's plenty more fish in the sea.

Maneater is knowingly imperfect , but presents a very competent open world checklist RPG where you happen to play a shark instead of the usual cop or criminal

Please do yourself a favor and check out Maneater if you enjoy anything about games in general, especially if you like the themes of aquatic wildlife, social satire, over-the-top comic violence, or open-world exploration; you won’t regret it.

Maneater is an enjoyable open-world romp that is just a bit too straightforward and contains more than a handful of bugs and performance issues.

In a world where everything is so damn serious, Maneater is a refreshing breath of air. It’s a short, fun, memorable romp through the life of a shark that’s better written than a lot of what comes out to today.

While Maneater has its problems, it can also be fun once you get used to the combat. However, those on the fence should wait for a patch or two before investing.

Maneater is a delirious and fun experience for the first few hours. But quickly you'll get a bit bored repeating the same thing over and over again.

Aware of its own limitations, Tripwire has opted for the fun of this particular power fantasy to present us with a game that will not be part of video game history or a candidate for GOTY, but that is undeniably enjoyable and funny in all its humorous packaging.
