Spelunky 2 is the definition of an addictive game with its high degree of difficulty, charming world, and sense of randomness. However, addictive doesn't necessarily mean fun and unfortunately, I stopped enjoying it after a few hours even though I kept playing anyway.

Spelunky 2 is likely to delight those who revere its predecessor. As for newcomers, a whole new world of curiosity, frustration, rage quitting, perseverance and reward awaits. This is a game that may be a challenge to get into for some, but sooner rather than later determination to succeed will likely evolve into devotion. This will be a game that will always encourage players to come back for more.

These are my Dark Souls maintained in the atmosphere of Indiana Jones in 2D. Spelunky 2, like its predecessor, is a delightfully difficult and backbreaking crossing through the levels and corridors. My weapon, however, was a dog, and a turkey was a steed – so I had a great time.

The original Spelunky's only obvious shortcoming was that its level design was somewhat limited. Spelunky 2 takes what made the original so great, fixes that shortcoming, and leaves us with one of the best-made indie games you'll ever play. A truly sensational effort from Mossmouth.

Many games fall into the roguelike genre, but few define it. Spelunky 2's secrets and danger-infused caverns make it simultaneously one of the most frustrating and rewarding games I've ever played. Yet, having barely scratched the surface of what it offers, I can't wait to start another run-whether in search of secrets or just to see how far I can ultimately get. And in the end, isn't the desire to continue playing the hallmark of any great game?

Spelunky 2 makes Spelunky new again: a fancier strap, more cogs, a cuckoo popping out from a hidden compartment on the hour. The correct time, as delightful as the first time I learned to tell it.

Spelunky 2 doesn't advance the original's formula, but there's more stuff to sink your teeth into.

A teasing blend of punishment and reward that will delight roguelike fans whether they played the first or not, Mossmouth's great achievement is in adding so much depth and scope without overcomplicating the formula.

Can you be enamored with a game and downright horrible at it? I’m talking about being so bad that it’s a struggle to get past its opening set of levels? If “Spelunky 2” has convinced me of anything, it's that the answer is a perverse “yes.”

Although Spelunky 2 recycles much of the formula that made the first game so great, it is a fantastic evolution. This is another "benchmark" for procedural games, which promises to provide countless discoveries and curiosities over the years. It is a product that tests the skill of both beginners and veterans. An essential experience for fans of the genre, whether in solo or cooperative mode.

A beautiful piece of craftsmanship. Spelunky 2 is all a sequel should be: polished, refined, bigger. A game of learning, a game of death, a game of emergent beautiful gameplay. Every second in this game is pure art: it will frustrate you, but in a positive way in which you will shout at the TV and then smile and retry. Just to die again, until you'll learn enough.

Spelunky 2 is a superb hard-core platformer and you might be tortured by the traps and monsters in the random-generated maps thousands of times. However, once you master all the tricks, the challenges and the variety of the gameplay will make you engaged.

Mossmouth did the impossible with Spelunky 2 in managing to create a sequel to an incredible game that did not disenfranchise existing fans or turn off newbies.

While it’s missing a few opportunities to embrace the advancements of the rogue-like genre, “Spelunky 2” still expands skillfully on the base of one of the first games in this popular style of games. With a load of new content and secrets to discover, this sequel offers everything fans of the original wanted, while offering very little to convince those that were repelled by the crushing difficulty. If you have any love for rogue-like games you owe it to yourself to at least check out this modern classic.

Simplicity and challenges are key components of the game, and they're executed almost perfectly here in an accessible and skillful way. Spelunky 2 certainly won't be for everyone, but for those who stick with it to see what it has to offer, the payoff is worth the investment.
