God of War 3 Remastered's update is mostly visual, but the action reminds us why we love this bloody series.

That parade of cathartic moments still makes God of War 3 worth playing, especially given the vividness and eye-popping destruction woven into every major battle. It peaks and drags and peaks and drags, sure, but God of War at its high point was never going to be sustainable. Five years on, it's clear that God of War 3 is especially emblematic of a series trying to figure out how to go higher when you've already reached the top of Mount Olympus.

The core game is still amazing, though the lack of any notable changes or additions in this release disappoints

God of War III on the PS4 is the same exciting game that it always was--just a little prettier.

This re-release seems unnecessary at first glance, but the conclusion of Kratos' journey serves up a level of spectacle that remains impressive in 2015.

God of War III has aged surprisingly gracefully. Although it's over five years old, somebody inexperienced with the series could easily mistake Remastered for an original PS4 game.

A daft, angry, bald journey, led by a screaming topless adonis that lets us kill everything that moves. Fair play, Sony.

So, is God of War III: Remastered worth its forty bucks price-tag? Unless a good story is absolutely necessary for you to enjoy a game, the answer is inevitably and overwhelmingly "yes" if you don't own the PS3 version.

Hardly a game that was in desperate need of a makeover, but the original is still a solid action adventure and Kratos' story is given at least an element of closure.

While God of War 3: Remastered may scratch the nostalgia itch we all have for Kratos-related mayhem, it doesn't offer anything more than a good-looking trip down memory lane. If you have yet to play the original God of War 3, this would be a great opportunity to do so, but those who don't want to have their memories tarnished due to a lack of bonus material may want to steer clear of God of War 3: Remastered.

The simplicity of the plot, the solid combat, and the bizarre perspective shifts during boss gameplay make this feel like it's the "purest" God of War game to me. It's a tribute to how much the game does right to the point that I didn't remember a lot of this stuff when I started playing God of War III again, playing from start to finish in a single session (normally I space these things out).

Nevertheless, being half a decade old and still kicking plentiful quantities of arse, God of War III Remastered is definitely one of the recent double-dips that I feel confident to recommending, even to those who have already played it.

God of War 3 Remastered feels like a game made explicitly for those that did not catch it the first time around.

With no real major upgrades to what was already a great game when originally released, this would be a tough sell at full price. Thankfully, God of War III Remastered is only $40, and that price point is quite a bit easier to swallow. If you've never played a God of War game before, and you either don't have a PS3 or don't want to play the previous games, you won't really know what's going on as it picks up towards the end of the anthology, but the story plays a secondary role to the gory action anyway. This still remains the best entry in the series to date. Pick it up if you want to see Kratos at his greatest.

Controls feel a little slower, slightly mis-translated, though the combat's core is still solid and visceral. But without any new content, this might be a better title for those who haven't played the original.

[W]hile this remains an exceptional example of Sony Santa Monica's slick character action series, you should only really consider ripping open your wallet for this re-release if you've never experienced it before.

God of War III Remastered feels like an empty shell of a great game. It is fantastic for those that never had a chance to experience it, but the price tag hurts the most. If it had included Ascension or any of the previous games it would definitely be more enticing, but as just one stand alone title, this is one remaster I feel needs a serious price drop before considering diving in.

I would always give this game high marks, no matter how many times they re-released it.  But while it was, and remains, a great and classic game in its own right, unless you have somehow never played it before, you should give this Remastered version a pass.  Instead, wait for a bonafide new instalment of the series, if and when another one is made in the future.

God of War III is a title worth playing as you can see by the review score, but it's just hard to recommend one game for $40 when you can spend $20 and get five including GoW III.

If already bought the game, though, there's nothing new here – just the updated game and assembled DLC. Aside from the visual improvements, this is the same game it was on PlayStation 3, for better or worse.
