Trinity Trigger is a simple game with a simple goal: Recreate the feeling of classic 90s RPGs. It's simple, for better and for worse. Level design, presentation, and ambition mostly suffer. However, the simplicity makes the gameplay and story really satisfying in a familiar way. In such a way that feels like catching up with an old friend. It's familiar but some things are new and different. You get a rush of nostalgia and pure enjoyment during your journey through Trinitia.
Despite my gripes, Trinity Trigger is a charming little JRPG that successfully provides a role-playing fix for anyone who may want something a little less intense from the genre. For me, the success of a JRPG is largely based on two factors – the strength of the narrative and how engaging the combat is. On both these fronts, Trinity Trigger is a resounding success, and the fact that it’s playable from start to finish in local co-op, with online soon to follow, is a fantastic touch that should elevate the experience further. With fast-paced combat that manages to stay interesting if you’re willing to dig into the customizable nature of each weapon and a narrative that does a great job of establishing a universe with a complex and storied past, Trinity Trigger is proof that there is absolutely space for these more scaled back experiences, and I hope this is just the beginning of FuRyu tailoring to this particular niche in the market.
Its plot goes in one ear and out the other, its visuals are nothing to write home about, and its combat is more shallow than its highly customizable stats system implies, but it’s still an enjoyable enough action RPG at its core. Trinity Trigger fits the bill if you’re looking to turn your brain off and save the world for a jaunt, but don’t expect it to leave a lasting impact.
It’s no wonder this game came out as well as it did, considering some the names behind the project, such as artist Yuki Nobuteru from Trial of Mana, and Raita Kazama of Xenoblade fame, as well as Hiroki Kikuta also from the Mana franchise. It’s quite a team and they sure pooled their talent into making an otherwise standard RPG fare into something closer to top shelf material. While I wouldn’t go out and say that Trinity Trigger is must-play, if you do end up picking it up you’ll find it to be a game that’s aimed to be pure, uncompromised entertainment, just as its inspirations from the past were, and in that regard, it surely succeeds.
Trinity Trigger plays it as safely as possible with an all-star development team. It's a shame it didn't try harder to elevate the genre like the Y's franchise constantly does with every entry. Trinity Trigger isn't a bad game by any means. It has a decent story, and exploration and combat can be fun; it just doesn't do enough to be a memorable title in a crowded genre.
Trinity Trigger still scratches a specific itch very well. This Mana-inspired game brings the three-player co-op fun back from the Super Nintendo era, but now without the need for a Multitap. This is a good romp for a single player, but it is best suited for a pair or a trio who want to traipse through a fantasy world slaying foes and finding treasure chests. This won't rival the highs of action RPGs, but it's an adventure well worth playing.
Trinity Trigger had so much promise. It had great talent associated with it. It looked like it could be a fun and grand adventure. But everything just fell flat on its face. From the story to just about every gameplay mechanic felt more tedious than enjoyable.
JRPG fans can rest easy knowing that Trinity Trigger will meet their lofty expectations; this is a nostalgia trip worth taking. While not perfect, with beautiful art and music and a combat system that will feel both fresh and familiar, it is a strong contender for one of the best JRPGs of 2023 so far. The plot isn't anything to write home about and it's a tad on the easy side, but it remains engaging, especially for Mana series enthusiasts. Hopefully its proximity to the launch of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom doesn't see Trinity Trigger overshadowed before it gets a chance to shine.
Trinity Trigger has many good qualities, with fun and accessible combat alongside an interesting story and fabulous pacing; however, these good aspects are viciously marred by foolish AI partners, obnoxious voice acting, mediocre music, and the lack of anything unique.
Overall, I like Trinity Trigger. You can see the influence of the Secret of Mana from the development team in Trinity Trigger, but it is not a Secret of Mana clone. I also like the modern touches of gameplay mixed with the older styles. However, in the back of my mind, I can’t help but think that there are bigger and better RPGs already available, and it will be the prestige of the development team that attracts players to the game.
This game is a statement declaring that older philosophies of yesteryear remain intact and are still relevant. The ideas are entertaining, and the dub – it ain’t half bad. That’s why I can enthusiastically hand it my seal of approval.
XSEED has a hit on their hands with Trinity Trigger. Everything about the game is enjoyable and in the case of the story and combat, everything perfectly gels together.
FuRyu can be quite hit or miss with their releases, and unfortunately I think Trinity Trigger is more a miss. That's not to say it isn't a worthwhile experience though, and I think its specific audience will enjoy what's on offer.
Although important names related to the genre of Japanese role-playing games have been involved in the project, Trinity Trigger proves to be an excessively simple title with wings clipped by its lack of ambition.

Trinity Trigger is a ton of fun and sets out to deliver a worthy experience and does so exceedingly well. While it rarely steps out of its comfort zone, what you’re getting is a solid RPG that boasts some impressive talent behind the scenes.
I loved Trinity Trigger. I’m a big fan of JRPGs, and the Mana series though. This is a game for fans of the genre. Its bland dungeon design and sometimes dumb support character AI hold it back from being a full-blown genre classic. But it has a compelling narrative and great combat. And the local co-op option seems too good to be true in this day and age. If you’re not into action JRPGs, Trinity Trigger isn’t going to change your mind. But anyone with any love for the genre should definitely give it a playthrough.
Trinity Trigger is an action RPG whose combat offers good malleability and a decent amount of content. Unfortunately, the generic narrative and the bad allies AI oare considerably negative factors for the experience and, together with some polishing details, leave the game short of what it could offer. Still, those who really like the genre will probably know how to appreciate the journey.

Despite the simplicity in several aspects, mainly visual and narrative, problems with the party AI and lack of personality, Trinity Trigger is a good tribute for fans of classic action JRPGs. The title is aimed at someone looking for a 3D experience similar to the gameplay of Secret of Mana, and is recommended with reservations for action JRPG fans who are open to a simple and casual adventure.

Overall, Trinity Trigger has some interesting ideas that don’t really pan out. Gameplay starts as a fun action RPG before evolving into a convoluted system where various encounters require swapping between various weapons/characters. Narrative also has some interesting elements, they are just lost in a rather predictable loop that overstays its welcome. For these reasons, there is still some charm if you love the genre, but otherwise I’d hold off for a bit.
Trinity Trigger was localized by XSeed Games and will be released to western audiences tomorrow, aiming to become one of the standout titles of 2023.
