Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is a retro shooter from the 90s at its best, but it also manages to be a game that can be enjoyed in the modern era.

I didn’t enjoy Boltgun that much. However, I’m sure it will appeal to gamers who don’t pay a lot of attention to gameplay balance or difficulty level. And if they are fans of the W40K universe and old-school first-person shooters, they will most likely love it.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is not only a fantastic nostalgia trip, but also a fantastic game. With extremely fun missions, creative enemies and a perfect setting, old school gamers will feel right at home with a title that feels like a classic straight out of the 90s.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is a competently made FPS that’s exactly what it’s advertised to be – a no-nonsense, Boomer Shooter with tight controls and satisfying combat loop. The fact that it looks amazing is the Daggerfruit on top. While the game plays it safe and doesn’t deviate from the established formula, it nevertheless offers over 10 hours of entertaining gameplay. At the same time, there is plenty of room for improvement. Even though multiplayer is out of the question, the addition of an endless mode, extra challenges, and even a map editor will go a long way in ensuring that the game is replayable. Boltgun is a purchase retro FPS fans won’t regret.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is polished and runs perfect, with fast-paced and exciting combat. Gamers that grew up playing 90s FPS games will get a kick out of how much it borrows from Doom, Quake, and the like, but many will tire of the archaic design choices that have been abandoned by modern games. Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun represents the best and worst of 90s-era FPS games, so while it has a solid foundation, it fails to deliver truly compelling content to go with it, making the game difficult to recommend to anyone that's not a hardcore Warhammer fan or who isn't desperately nostalgic for the 90s.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is an inspired production, fully consistent with the intention of bringing the brutality of the imagery of the miniatures game into a boomer shooter all lead and blood.

Warhammer 40.000: Boltgun is an exquisite boomer-shooter to play. Everything from music to graphics and gameplay screams quality and it is totally worth the $20 price tag. Developers Autorch did a solid job on Boltgun, and we can praise them for adding much care and love into making such a great shooter. We highly suggest you pick up Warhammer 40k: Boltgun if you are itching for an old-style FPS.

The Warhammer 40,000 universe is a good match for a retro shooter and Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is proof that the concept works. Not every Games Workshop licensed game is a winner, but Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun crosses the finish line in style. It’s not deep or complex. Most of its core mechanics are decades old. But I had more simple, addictive fun with Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun than with many, more sophisticated shooters of late.

Retro-shooting and fast-paced arenas suit the Warhammer 40K setting nicely, but Boltgun falls short of greatness because its ideas peter out too quickly. Some good level design and nice environments make up for a lack of variety.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is a fun and nostalgic gore-fest that will satisfy fans of the tabletop classic and retro first-person shooters. The fast-paced gunplay combat is challenging and enjoyable, with plenty of entertaining weapons for blowing enemies up. Its 2.5D pixel-art graphics are particularly gorgeous, oozing charm and adoration for the Warhammer 40,000 universe.

It is true that a shooter of these characteristics has its own well-known limitations and a structure that does not invent the wheel, but as I often say in my texts, there are times when more is not always better. And in their own limitations, the good folks at Auroch Digital have created a little gem.
