Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is polished and runs perfect, with fast-paced and exciting combat. Gamers that grew up playing 90s FPS games will get a kick out of how much it borrows from Doom, Quake, and the like, but many will tire of the archaic design choices that have been abandoned by modern games. Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun represents the best and worst of 90s-era FPS games, so while it has a solid foundation, it fails to deliver truly compelling content to go with it, making the game difficult to recommend to anyone that's not a hardcore Warhammer fan or who isn't desperately nostalgic for the 90s.

For Warhammer 40,000 lovers and old-timers, Boltgun is a fantastic game. It has a nice graphical styling combining pixel art and simple models. A minor problem, however, is the outdated gameplay. The game can be frustrating at times.

While there’s some mindless fun to be had here for Warhammer enthusiasts, Warhammer 40k: Boltgun is a perfectly passable entry in the genre that maybe relies a bit too much on its IP than trying to do something new.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun does a great job of blending classic and modern day shooters. They’ve done all the hard work in building an authentic aesthetic, as well as making grenades, charge attacks, shields, twin stick shooting and jumping all feel natural, working well within the confines of the game. Unfortunately, the desire to focus around enemy waves, arena shooting, overpowered strikes and overly long levels undoes a lot of that, leaving a lot of potential buried beneath unsatisfying, frustrating content.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is a solid first-person shooter that captures the 90s era well, it’s hardly anything revolutionary. It’s a nice homage that does a solid job of making you feel like the game existed back then, but modern things like mantling, bloom, and 21:9 support give way to its immersion. The game is unapologetically Warhammer 40K, and the weapons and enemies are true to the source material. The Warhammer 40,000 Universe has nothing else like Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun , and that’s what makes it so distinct in the space and genre.

If you can look past the repetition and the roadblocks, Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is a largely solid shooter. It nails the visuals, the guns generally feel great, and the sound design is suitably punchy — just don't expect it to push beyond those foundations.

A fascinating retro shooter that proves a perfect match for the world of Warhammer 40,000 but whose almost complete lack of nuance and variety eventually wears you down.

Boltgun's boltgun earns a place in the pantheon of great video game weapons, but the rest of the game's arsenal doesn't quite live up to it.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is a decent entry into the retro-shooter genre that will appeal most to fans of the WH40k universe, while everyone else should probably choose a different, better game to fulfill their classic action itch.

I didn’t enjoy Boltgun that much. However, I’m sure it will appeal to gamers who don’t pay a lot of attention to gameplay balance or difficulty level. And if they are fans of the W40K universe and old-school first-person shooters, they will most likely love it.

In general BOLTGUN is a title that is ideally enjoyed in small doses, and it succeeds in this admirably.

Boltgun is, on the whole, excellent when it comes to its basic mechanics and presentation, but the game fails to make an impression on players' imaginations. It's a safe bet, in fact, that it would quickly fall into oblivion were it not for the mega-franchise supporting it. If you're nostalgic for old-school shooters or a big fan of the 40K craze, Auroch's title is sure to please. On the other hand, unlike the phenomenal level design of Dusk or the frenzy of Ultrakill, Boltgun is unlikely to leave its mark on the videogame universe if only for a few hours.

Boltgun tooks a lot of inspiration from old-time classic like Doom, Quake and Build-engine games, but lacks their top-notch gameplay rhythm.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is a solid throwback FPS that makes up for being too generous with the resources by its excellent weapon, monster and level design.

It may be confusing to navigate, but Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun has definitely got it where it counts. When you aren't busy trying to remember how many times you've been through a certain room, the comically violent combat sequences offer up consistently thrilling engagements with just the right amount of difficulty. We wish that it controlled a little better, but it's impossible to deny that Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is just a plain fun game to tear through. We'd recommend this to anyone looking for a solid boomer shooter to add to their library; it's not a game that you need to rush out and play right away, but you'll probably be satisfied once you get around to it.

Retro-shooting and fast-paced arenas suit the Warhammer 40K setting nicely, but Boltgun falls short of greatness because its ideas peter out too quickly. Some good level design and nice environments make up for a lack of variety.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun isn't here to tell a story, but to offer chaotic fun, something it does very well. The game's straightforward nature isn't an issue and makes it an ideal title for players missing the FPS classics, or rather, the Boomer Shooters.

While Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun might be one of the more visually impressive retro shooters in a long time, it also provided me with plenty of frustration during my playtime. The monsters, guts, and gore make for exciting gameplay, but it feels like Auroch Digital is trying to milk it for all that it’s worth at times. Boltgun is a natural successor to retro 90s shooters, for better or worse.
