In true Mario fashion, this title has some great audio from the dinging when you select certain options in the menu, to the fast-paced arcade-style music you get in the main menu. You load into this title in a positive mind space with the happy fast fast-paced arcade-style retro music which was a great throwback, but completely different from the original if you ever played it, as that has been overhauled.

I may have one or two complaints about the $60 pricetag, but at the end of the day, this is the ultimate version of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. A magnificent gem half a dozen people played back on the Gamecube is now widely available on a more successful machine, with a handful of audiovisual improvements, whilst keeping that pristine combat system and gameplay loop intact. Whilst I wish there were more additions to this pricey remake/remaster (hell if I know how to label it), it’s exactly what I wanted.

While Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door has much to recommend it, especially for newcomers, in many ways it is a literal downgrade of a twenty-year-old classic.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is a great remake that brings one of Nintendo's best RPGs to modern consoles. With a litany of new quality-of-life updates, great writing, an addicting combat system, intriguing characters, and a stunning world, The Thousand-Year Door is a near-perfect game, save for a few frame drops and the frustrating use of backtracking.

I have no doubt that if you loved Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door the first time around there’s nothing here that will detract from your memories – and if you’re looking to check the game out for the first time, it’s probably aged better than most of its contemporaries, the occasionally slow pacing aside.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is a game that offers a unique and engaging experience with its beautiful graphics, action-adventure gameplay, and variety of features. However, it does have some drawbacks such as a slow start and lack of guidance. But it is very easy to get past these and it is a game that will just take over as you will fall in love with the combat, the world, and will always want to see what is next.

The remake of the game successfully blends nostalgia with modern enhancements, offering a visually refreshed experience while maintaining the charm and essence of the original. Nintendo has managed to strike a delicate balance between paying homage to the beloved classic and introducing contemporary updates that appeal to both new players and long-time fans. I must admit that the Switch version not only meets but, in some aspects, exceeds the high standards set by its predecessor. While my nostalgia for the GameCube version remains strong, the Switch remake stands out as a remarkable achievement in its own right.

I’ve long considered Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door to be a benchmark title for how to do a sequel well. TTYD built on a lot of the ideas that the first Paper Mario established in new and creative ways while staying true to what made the first game work. So I am excited to say that Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door on Switch lives up to the Gamecube’s TTYD in many ways, setting a benchmark of its own for how to make a very faithful remake while also playing up the game’s strengths. I’m hopeful that this game finds success alongside the Super Mario RPG remake and sends a message to Nintendo that there is still a place in the world of gaming for a true RPG experience starring the beloved plumber. If you own the original game, I would describe the two versions as generally comparable in overall quality. This remake adds even more personality and a few neat bonuses to an otherwise splendid game, but some performance issues hold it back from me giving it a perfect grade. If you want a more radically different remake, you won’t find it here, but what you will get is a lovingly made video game with many of the original version’s best attributes shining brighter than ever before. If you’ve never played The Thousand-Year Door in any form and you own a Switch, you owe it to yourself to play this gem of an RPG.

Nintendo offers us, once again, to remember one of its most legendary games from previous generations, recently the Game Boy Advance with Mario vs. Donkey Kong and even more recently from Super Nintendo with Super Mario RPG, only this time for the Gamecube. Paper Mario: The Millennial Door is a great game that every fan of the big N should enjoy, and now is a great opportunity to do so thanks to the great facelift it has in addition to the subtle, but interesting additions it brings. An adventure that, let's be honest, will not pose any challenge for an average gamer, but it can easily take 30 hours to finish, a few extra hours if we want to do it 100%, but little more.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door probably has one or two issues that might annoy you, but it's also one of the greatest and wildest role-playing games ever made. It's undoubtedly one of the finest and most adored role-playing games of all time. The remake adds several renewed concepts that make it stand apart even more. It's hard not to admire the way it continues the unique turn-based combat mechanism of the previous installments while adding gorgeous visuals, a wide range of characters, and hilarious scripting.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is still my favorite of the series. Not only is it the best title, it's also the most complete, thanks in no small part to its endearing characters. I hope Nintendo will continue in this slightly more purist direction for JRPG fans. It's the kind of experience that offers a lot for the money, and this reissue is a great success.
